I thrived in the primitive tribe

Chapter 16 Pottery Making (1)

Lu Yao ran to the square and found the leader who was arranging things for everyone. When the leader saw Lu Yao running over, he knew that she had come to ask about the clay.

"Lu Yao is here. The clay you wanted has been found. I had someone bring it to you. Please check if this is the right type." The leader instructed a beastman next to him to bring over the wicker basket that had been placed to the side.

"Okay, thank you, Chief."

Lu Yao looked at the dried clay in the basket, reached in and tested it. It was quite sticky and should be suitable for making pottery.

"So, is this what you're looking for?"

"I think so, Chief. We've found the clay. I want to make some pottery."

"Then you make it, but what is pottery?"

"Pottery is similar to bamboo tubes, but it is made of clay. It can be used to store things, such as food and soup."

"Oh, that's great. Do you need any help?"

"Not at the moment, but I may need to use a lot of firewood, as the tribe's firewood supply may be running out."

"It's alright. Tomorrow I'll leave a few people behind to escort the rest of the tribe out to fetch some firewood."

"Ok."

After telling Lu Yao all this, the leader went back to continue processing the prey with everyone.

Lu Yao wanted to help everyone process the prey, so she joined them at the front, wanting to lend a hand, but everyone said they didn't need Lu Yao's help.

And so Lu Yao was thus gracefully excluded from the busy crowd.

"Since there's nothing I need to do, I'll plan out how to fire the pottery tomorrow."

She found a stone to sit on, and started drawing and writing on the ground with a twig, preparing to make pottery the next day.

"What are you doing?" Luo Ya saw Lu Yao standing there alone, seemingly doing something, so he came over to check on her. He stood to the side watching Lu Yao slide a branch across the ground, wondering what was going on, so he asked her.

"What are you doing? You scared me! Why didn't you make a sound when you came over?"

"You were too focused to notice me."

"Then it's still my fault," Lu Yao pouted and looked at Luo Ya with a wronged expression.

Loya felt very uncomfortable being stared at and quickly begged for forgiveness, "It's my fault, I'll definitely speak louder next time. What are you doing here?"

"I'm writing something."

"Is this the script used by the Beast God?"

"Oh no, we've been exposed. We've been here for so long, and we haven't seen any records here. Everyone basically communicates face-to-face or by word of mouth." Lu Yao mentally dealt herself a devastating blow.

"Yes, these are the characters I saw in my dream. By the way, what do we use to record things here?"

"We have nothing to record."

"So you all figured out how to hunt on your own, without being taught?"

"These are basically taught by the elders in the tribe from generation to generation, so there is no need to record them."

"Oh, I see."

"Looks like we'll have to open a literacy class, otherwise it'll get more and more troublesome. We can't just rely on words to communicate; if the person relaying the message makes a mistake, we're doomed," Lu Yao thought to herself.

Then Loya saw Lu Yao stand up and walk towards the leader, looking puzzled and wondering what had happened.

"Chief, I need to talk to you about something. Let's go over there."

The leader followed Lu Yao to the side and asked.

What went wrong?

“I discovered a problem: our tribe doesn’t have any written records of events, so we can’t record our craftsmanship and my experience for future generations to see.”

"Well, since ancient times, people have passed it down by word of mouth, so there's nothing to record."

"Now that we have fewer people, this is the case, but what if we have more people in the future? Passing down our culture through word of mouth won't be suitable. If there's even a small mistake along the way, our heritage will be broken..."

Listening to Lu Yao's description, the leader fell into deep thought.

"So, what's your idea?"

“I saw the writing used by the Beast God in my dream. I thought about teaching it to everyone so that we could use writing to record things that need to be passed down, writing them on animal skins or finding a better medium for recording. We could also use writing to transmit messages, so we wouldn’t have to worry about middlemen making mistakes or omissions.”

"This is indeed a good idea." After hearing what Lu Yao said, the chief immediately thought that if things continued to develop as they were, with Lu Yao around, the Dragon Alliance tribe might become the largest tribe on the continent in the future. If that were the case, the previous method of communication would indeed not work.

"So how do you plan to teach everyone the Beast God's script?"

“I’m thinking of teaching in two groups. During the day, those who stay in the tribe, regardless of age, will come and learn the script from me. After learning for a while in the morning, they will go back to continue their work.”

The rest were those who went out hunting. After they returned, the task of cooking was given to those who stayed in the tribe during the day. They also studied with me for a while, so both groups could learn to read and write.

The leader thought it was just a matter of learning some characters every day, nothing difficult.

"can."

Lu Yao's plan was well-thought-out, but he did not expect to encounter such great resistance.
