Chapter 10 The Little Fairy Boy Under the Seat of the Child-Giving Temple

When Grandma Yu opened her eyes, she saw Jianlin sitting happily in the tofu pudding, a small dot on his forehead that someone had somehow dappled with lipstick. Grandma Yu was so overjoyed that she momentarily forgot Jianlin was Longzhen's son. She thought it was because her years of Buddhist faith and good deeds had moved Guanyin Bodhisattva, who had sent her a chubby, healthy son.

Grandma Yu smiled and picked Jianlin up from the tofu pudding. "Oh! My good child, give Mommy a good kiss. My darling, you've finally come down from heaven to find Mommy!"

Grandma Yu gave Jianlin a big kiss on the cheek, rubbing her smudged face against Jianlin's fair skin. When Grandma Yu held Jianlin, he thought it was his mother, and he grinned at her. Whether it was because Jianlin had grown accustomed to his mother's faint floral scent or for some other reason, he soon realized it wasn't his mother and burst into tears.

Grandma Yu quickly and gently patted Jianlin's thigh, softly coaxing, "Sister, be good! Sister, be good! Don't cry, sister! Mommy's here with you!"

Seeing this, Longzhen could only watch silently. Longzhen thought to herself, "Why doesn't God grant Grandma Yu, such a good person, a child? Isn't this just leaving her to grow old alone?" Grandma Yu's husband left her because he disliked her inability to have children and went to find someone else.

Grandma Yu suddenly remembered that Jianlin had just sat on the tofu pudding. So she picked Jianlin up and was about to walk towards her kitchen when Longzhen blocked her way.

Longzhen said, "Sister-in-law, where are you taking my Jianlin now?"

Grandma Yu said, "My little sister is all dirty right now!" Of course, I took her to wash her!

Just as Longzhen was about to take Jianlin from Grandma Yu's arms, she found that Grandma Yu was holding her son tightly and refused to let go.

Longzhen said gently, "Sister-in-law, I need to take my son back to wash up now. I'll grind the remaining beans after I've given Jianlin a bath."

Grandma Yu, who was in a great mood, immediately frowned when she heard Longzhen say that.

Grandma Yu, what are you saying? Where are you taking my sister? Do you know what? This is my son, whom I finally had, and I won't allow anyone to take him away!

Longzhen held onto Grandma Yu's arm and gently shook it. "Sister-in-law, wake up! This isn't your son, it's my Jianlin!"

"What nonsense are you talking about? This is my little sister! Guanyin Bodhisattva saw that I did good deeds every day and was very moved, so she gave me a son. Look, my son has a little red birthmark on his forehead, between his eyebrows! Does your son have one?"

As she spoke, Grandma Yu brushed the stray hairs from Jianlin's forehead to the side. Longzhen looked closely and saw that there really was a small red birthmark between Jianlin's eyebrows. However, Longzhen clearly remembered that Jianlin didn't have this small red birthmark between his eyebrows!

Before Longzhen could figure out what was going on, Grandma Yu placed Jianlin on the nearest table. Grandma Yu then pushed Longzhen out of her house with both hands.

Grandma Yu said, "Get out! Get out of my house right now! I will never allow you to take my sister away."

Longzhen was getting angry. "You've never even had children! How could you have such a grown son? I beg you to understand!"

Upon hearing this, Grandma Yu turned around, grabbed a basin, filled it with water from her own sink, and without saying a word, splashed all the water onto Longzhen.

Longzhen thought that Granny Yu had taken her words to heart and would return Jianlin to her, so she stood quietly at Granny Yu's door waiting. But to Longzhen's surprise, Granny Yu brought a basin of cold water and poured it on Longzhen without saying a word.

Speechless after being doused with cold water, Longzhen could only turn and leave. Just then, for some unknown reason, snowflakes began to fall, and the cold wind blew mercilessly against Longzhen, like sharp knives cutting her face. Coupled with the cold water splashed on her by Granny Yu, a thick layer of frost had formed on Longzhen's hair and eyebrows.

Longzhen struggled to walk on the snow, her legs feeling like lead. Frustrated and anxious, she didn't pay attention to her footing and slipped and fell in the snow.

Old Man Yang must have encountered some divine protection on the mountain today, for the prey seemed to have made a pact, appearing one by one before him. Before long, he returned home with several rabbits and pheasants. He put the rabbits and pheasants in a coop, intending to raise them a bit larger so he could sell them at the market. Old Man Yang planned to use the money from the pheasants and rabbits to buy a piece of farmland; half of it would be planted with rice for his daily needs, and the other half, naturally, with glutinous rice for brewing rice wine!

Old Man Yang laughed heartily at the thought of having rice wine again! A whooshing sound interrupted his reverie. The snow was falling heavier, and a biting wind blew in through the crack in the door, which wasn't closed tightly. Soon, the wind forced the door open. Large snowflakes drifted into the house, and Old Man Yang shook his head helplessly.

Old Man Yang happily ran towards the kitchen, carrying a wild rabbit in one hand and a wild pheasant in the other.

Old Man Yang said, "Longzhen, Longzhen, we're going to have a big meal tonight!"

When Old Man Yang ran to the kitchen, he found it empty. Only then did he remember that Longzhen had taken her son to Grandma Yu's house to help make tofu.

After Longzhen's tireless efforts, he finally arrived at his doorstep. Just as he was about to go inside, he suddenly collapsed heavily in the snow with a thud.

Hearing the commotion inside, Old Man Yang rushed out to check. He found Longzhen lying alone in the snow, but Jianlin was nowhere to be seen. Without thinking, Old Man Yang hurriedly ran to Longzhen's side and lifted her from the snowdrift. Suddenly, Old Man Yang seemed to remember something and looked around.

Old Man Yang said, "Longzhen! Longzhen! Longzhen! Where is our big, fat son? Why didn't you bring our big, fat son back?"

Longzhen seemed to hear Old Man Yang talking to her, so she whispered, "Our big fat boy is still at Granny Yu's house."

Before Longzhen could say anything more, she fainted. Old Man Yang quickly carried Longzhen to the bed, stood by the bed for a moment and then went to the wardrobe, found a set of dry clothes and changed Longzhen into them.

Old Man Yang picked up Longzhen's clothes and discovered that they were not only soaked but also covered in ice crystals.
