Chapter 9 Ashitaka Reappears

Liu Yufei led his horse through the market, and people around him quickly moved away. Survival was already extremely difficult in this era, and seeing Liu Yufei dressed in armor and leading a fine horse, they assumed he was a warrior.

During the Warring States period, while samurai did not hold the same prestigious status as the imperial family, they were still not people these commoners could afford to offend. The men Liu Yufei had just killed were not true samurai; at best, they were ronin, who had laid down their weapons to serve the people but then took up arms to become bandits.

It's called a market, but it's really just a bunch of low thatched huts gathered together. The reason it's located here is because there's a temple next to the market, and the monks protect the vendors, so they're safe. Of course, they still have to pay a protection fee.

The monks of island nations are different from us. Since ancient times, our monks have always adopted an attitude of renouncing the world and becoming monks, but they are different. Since Buddhism spread eastward, monks have had a very high social status.

This status doesn't refer to fame or prestige, but rather that these people actually command troops and have enough influence to participate in the power struggles among the daimyo. Moreover, after the heads of each family step down, they all choose to become monks, achieving a so-called "secluded" state.

It's no wonder these monks wielded such power. The long period of chaos and instability had left the people displaced and their future uncertain. With constant warfare between daimyo, they could only rely on these countless gods and Buddhas.

Of course, this was a chaotic era. In a peaceful era, no daimyo or general would allow their existence. For example, Oda Nobunaga, the Sixth Demon King, directly set fire to Mount Hiei.

At this moment, people were coming and going around Liu Yufei, some wearing straw sandals, some wearing wooden clogs, and some barefoot. Liu Yufei's eyes swept around but he didn't see Ashitaka, but he did see the monk Geda.

"You only gave me this little bit for seven coins? How about a little more?"

"You know it costs seven coins! It's a miracle you can even see the food. Look at everyone else, their faces are practically in their bowls! Oh ho ho ho! Guest, what would you like to order? My food is delicious and inexpensive; rice porridge is only seven coins!"

As soon as the proprietress saw Liu Yufei approaching the stall, she greeted him warmly. The monk, who was eating, instinctively turned around, then shrank back, but instead of being afraid, he smiled and said:

"Master Samurai, is that you?"

"you are?"

"Oh, you just saved my life, and I haven't even had a chance to thank you yet. Come sit down and eat with me."

In the original story, he was specifically waiting for Ashitaka here, but now he's waiting for Liu Yufei. Looking at the long sword in Liu Yufei's hand, the monk, feigning superiority, said:

"Shopkeeper, this is my friend, don't try to fool him!!"

"Hehe, don't worry, our shop is famous for miles around. Come on, customer!!"

Liu Yufei didn't say he wanted to eat, but the shopkeeper served him a bowl. By then, the monk had already finished eating, and just then, a commotion broke out ahead.

"What's this? It's a copper coin! You think you can buy my things without copper coins?"

Liu Yufei immediately recognized Ashitaka, but didn't get up right away. Instead, the monk with the bulging skin smiled and said:

"I'll go see what's going on!!"

With that, he tucked the bowl into his pocket and walked away into the distance. Liu Yufei quickly finished his porridge and immediately put down seven copper coins.

"Hey! Don't go! We don't have enough money!!"

Liu Yufei was stunned. He had run into a shady business. In broad daylight, this was outrageous.

"Aren't you his friend? He hasn't paid yet! And the bowl he just took was mine!!"

Liu Yufei was speechless, utterly exasperated! "I was wondering why he'd gone in without even knowing Ashitaka? Was he waiting for me here?"

There was nothing Liu Yufei could do but take out twenty coins before the proprietress would stop. Ashitaka, on the other hand, didn't argue with the shopkeeper, who thought he was a fool.

The monk with the lumps quickly spotted what the proprietress was holding in the crowd, and immediately stepped forward to pick up the gold nugget, saying:

"Oh my god, this is real gold! It could buy at least three bags of rice! Is there a bank around here? Huh?"

People nearby immediately looked over curiously. Hearing the monk's confident words, the proprietress knew that the item was valuable and reached out to snatch it.

The monk with the bumpy nose tried to dodge twice, but the proprietress still managed to snatch it away.

It must be said that while the monk Ashitaka may not have any other skills, he is quite adept at inciting people. Ashitaka paid no attention to him, coldly swiping his pockets as he walked away. He didn't care about anything in the world, let alone gold.

Ashitaka, we meet again?

"Who are you? It's you!!"

After a brief moment of surprise, Ashitaka quickly regained his composure and, without saying anything more, tried to leave.

"Haha, young man, you two know each other? Perfect, it'll be good for us to keep each other company."

The monk with the bulging eyes set his sights on Ashitaka, probably also because he coveted the gold on Ashitaka's body. He traveled far and wide and immediately recognized the antelope that Ashitaka was riding.

Ashitaka was very clever and could see that the two men had ill intentions, but he did not refuse them. Instead, he continued walking forward. The monk glanced at Liu Yufei and immediately followed. Liu Yufei followed right away.

But as soon as they stepped out of the market, three tails followed them. Ashitaka had anticipated this outcome, and his brow furrowed slightly.

"Heh heh, looks like we're in trouble again!!"

If it were before, Monk Geda would definitely have been in the lead, but now Liu Yufei is here, isn't he? He has seen Liu Yufei's skills and also judged Liu Yufei's character.

Liu Yufei smiled and said:

"Wait for me! I'll be right back."

"Eh!!"

Ashitaka knew exactly what Liu Yufei was going to do, but as soon as he spoke, Liu Yufei rushed out.

As soon as the three wandering samurai saw Liu Yufei rushing over, they became wary. Before they could speak, Liu Yufei raised his sword.

The three men were surprised by Liu Yufei's decisiveness and immediately drew their swords to defend themselves. However, Liu Yufei's downward slash with his sword was so powerful that it broke their swords in two and decapitated them.

The other two were so shocked that before they could even beg for mercy, Liu Yufei easily ended the fight with two more strikes.

"Still so reckless! People like that don't live long!"

Not only was the monk with a limp brow shocked, but Ashitaka was also taken aback. He hadn't expected Liu Yufei to kill all three of them so easily, and his already furrowed brows furrowed even more.

Liu Yufei, completely unconcerned, rode back and said with a smile:

"Just some low-level thugs, let's go!!"

"You really have no humanity, do you?"

Ashitaka remained silent, but the monk with the bulging eyes spoke up, his tone extremely relaxed. Liu Yufei also smiled and said:

"You're not much better than me, are you?!"

"Let's hurry! There might be more people behind us!!"

The three of them walked quickly forward. Liu Yufei and Ashitaka both had mounts, and the monk with wooden clogs was just as fast, showing that he also had martial arts skills.
