Chapter 43 Before Departure, Arrangements in the Western Territory
In the days following Robert's departure, Daenerys's men continued to collect the three dragons' food on time every day, and Bai Ze would occasionally go out of town to Wolfwood to check on the dragons' physical development.
After a week of feeding, the three dragons have grown significantly larger, from a minibus to a large bus. The largest of them, Drogon, is almost as big as a giant shuttle bus that can take you to the world of anime!
Seeing the state of the three dragons, Daenerys finally believed Bai Ze's words and decided to go south to the West with him. Bai Ze also took the opportunity to tell Ned that he was also going south to the West.
Ned looked at me, who was grinning, and said:
"What will happen to your tavern now that you're gone? The people of Winterfell will never again witness your exciting duels, nor will they have any new wines to showcase!"
Bai Ze said with a smile:
"Don't worry, one place can't keep me here forever. I'll come back to Winterfell from time to time to enjoy the snowy landscapes of the North, to play and have fun with my old friends, and to have a drink!"
"Don't forget, I am a swordsman who roams the continent!"
Ned looked at Bai Ze, who still acted like a wandering knight, and said helplessly:
"Don't forget that you are now a duke, and it is your duty to protect the Westerlands for Robert!"
Bai Ze continued:
"Those are minor issues. We've already dealt with the White Walkers, so acquiring a territory is no big deal! Hahaha~"
Looking at the carefree Bai Ze, Ned always felt that Robert had made a mistake in granting the Western Regions to Bai Ze!
Ned then added:
"Remember to say goodbye to the kids before you leave. They really like you, 'Blood-Eyed Sword Saint'!"
Bai Ze nodded and said:
"Okay, I'll say goodbye to them! I'll go find them now. Perfect timing, I have a few gifts to give to some of the children before I leave!"
Ned knew that anything Bai Ze could give away as a gift was definitely a valuable item, so he quickly said:
"Then I'll thank you on behalf of the children!"
I shook my head and said:
"No problem~ Don't you know me?"
…
Arriving at the training grounds at Wolfsburg, all the children were there. Jon Snow was not present, so Cyrio took over the task of teaching the children swordsmanship. Robb, Theon, Arya, Bran, Rickon, and others were all there.
Rob and Theon, facing Bai Ze, were the first to see Bai Ze enter the training ground. Rob excitedly shouted:
"Lord Bai Ze!"
Upon hearing her brother's voice, Arya turned around and saw that it was Lord Bai Ze. Overjoyed, she threw down the wooden sword in her hand, shouted "Lord Bai Ze," and ran towards Bai Ze with her hands raised.
Sirio looked at Arya, who had completely forgotten about practicing, shook his head, and made an "Ara la~" sound.
Bai Ze was rushed into a hug by Ailiya, who hugged the excited child and then let go of her. Rob and the others also walked up to Bai Ze.
Bai Ze looked at Rob, who was already at level 26. This young wolf lord had finally grown up after the battle of Red Fork River, and had surpassed his father in terms of personal ability, charisma, level and other aspects.
Bai Ze smiled and said to Robert:
"Our little wolf cub has grown into a man. You did a great job in the two battles at Red Fork River. To celebrate your growth, I'm going to give you a fine sword as a reward!"
The surrounding crowd exclaimed in admiration. Even Sirio, who already possessed a rare purple weapon, was incredibly envious. The swords obtained through the martial arts tournament were certainly not as good as the one that Lord Bai Ze had given away privately!
Rob also raised his eyebrows happily and quickly said:
"Really? Thank you so much, sir!"
Arya pouted when she saw that her brother had also received a sword. She had wanted to have a sword of her own for a long time.
Bai Ze naturally saw Arya pouting and then said:
"In a few days I will be heading south to the Westerlands. After all, His Majesty Robert appointed me Warden of the Westerlands, and I still need to take charge of my fiefdom!"
Upon hearing that Lord Bai Ze was leaving Winterfell, Arya anxiously grabbed Bai Ze's arm and asked:
"Really? My lord, you're leaving Winterfell? Does that mean I won't be able to play with Celine anymore? Please don't go!"
Bai Ze patted Arya's head and said:
"Don't worry, I'll still come back to the North whenever I have time. The snow scenery here is unlike anything I've seen anywhere else! I'll also come back to the tavern from time to time to have a feast and drink fine wine with the people I know from the North!"
Arya relaxed knowing that Lord Bai Ze would return, but she was still a little sad that Lord Bai Ze couldn't stay in Winterfell forever.
Seeing Arya's sadness, I told the children about the surprise I had prepared.
"Before I leave, I will give each of you a gift as a parting gift. You must study hard with your teachers and scholars, and in the future, follow your brother Robb to guard the North."
The children's eyes lit up immediately, and they started chattering with words of gratitude.
Bai Ze patted Robert and said:
"Bring your younger siblings to the tavern tomorrow, and I'll give you gifts!"
Robert nodded and said:
"Yes, sir! I will bring them to the tavern to visit you tomorrow morning!"
After chatting for a few more minutes, Bai Ze left Wolf Castle and returned to the tavern to prepare gifts for the group the next day.
Upon returning, Bai Ze prepared a pink artifact, the Undefeated Sword, for Robert, and a Snow Dance Sword (a rare purple ice-attribute katana) for each of the younger ones.
We've also prepared a rare purple Thornbow for Theon Greyjoy. The loser's still not getting a sword; let him play archery instead!
…
The next morning, to everyone's surprise, Lady Caitlin came to the tavern with several children, along with a few dire wolves. The wolves had petted them long ago when they were still little furballs, and they still remembered Bai Ze's scent.
Bai Ze sent Tyrion and Brienne to the backyard barn to prepare some pet food for Robb, Bran, and Rickon's wolves; they would definitely love it. It's a pity that Arya's wolf got away, and Sansa's wolf became a scapegoat for Cersei's revenge.
Watching the large wolves devour their food, Rob's Grey Wind was already quite big. Celine stood next to Grey Wind, about the same height as it. Celine pressed her entire body against Grey Wind's thick neck, sucking hard on its fur.
Caitlin looked at the children playing and then gently looked at Bai Ze, saying:
"Thank you, Lord Bai Ze, for taking care of the Stark family since you came to the North. I also learned about Jon Snow from Ned. It's so sad that the boy has been suffering under my dislike at Wolfsburg. I treated him so badly before!"
Catelyn was always there for the Stark family in times of trouble, but in the show, due to Littlefinger Baelish's manipulation, she was constantly being played, and in the end, she died in River City along with Robb.
Now that the children are all here and she has figured out that her husband was not unfaithful to her, Aunt Cat deeply regrets how she treated Jon Snow before.
Bai Ze shook his head at Aunt Cat. He had come to Westeros to change the tragic fate of House Stark, and the current happy ending was his goal!
"The best outcome is for children to grow up happily, and isn't Rob a role model for them now?"
Bai Ze said to Aunt Cat with a smile.
Aunt Cat looked at Robert, who was taking care of the little ones, with a face full of satisfaction, and turned to Bai Ze, saying:
“I will have Ned find a way to bring Jon Snow back from the Wall. I want to reaffirm Jon Snow’s identity with the children. He is a member of House Stark, the older brother of the younger ones, not a bastard!”
Bai Ze nodded in agreement. For Jon Snow, this was even better than knowing his true identity.
Bai Ze looked at the several large creatures that had eaten their fill, and had Xiao Meng bring out the weapons she had prepared. He then had Robert lead them all over to surround the group.
Bai Ze accepted the divine artifact—Invincible in a Hundred Battles—from Rob and looked at him, saying:
"This is a sword of even higher quality than the Valyrian steel sword, and its name is Undefeated! I hope you will not let this name be tarnished, and that you will remain undefeated for the North and for the Kingdom!"
He handed the sword to Rob, who was so excited that his face turned red. He had seen the power of Bai Ze's weapon during the battle against the White Walkers at the Wall, and he felt very honored to receive such a sword.
Robert accepted the sword with both hands, his expression both excited and resolute, and said:
"I will make its name resound throughout the seven kingdoms, and ensure its invincibility in a hundred battles!"
Bai Ze then brought over several more identical Snow Dance swords and handed them to the three younger ones, saying:
"Study hard with your brothers, teachers, and scholars, and you will be Robert's right-hand men in the future!"
Arya was the happiest of all, finally having her own sword. Bran, still dazed from not being baptized by the Three-Eyed Raven, happily showed off his new sword to Rickon.
Bai Ze took the last Thorn Bow, looked at the somewhat forlorn Theon Greyjoy, and said:
"Theon, you are a very good archer. This bow is for you. From now on, you must help Rob guard the North!"
Theon never expected to receive a gift. Theon, who always considered himself an adopted son of the Stark family, had a deep affection for the Stark children. Had he not betrayed them later, he would still be a good young man!
Finally, Aunt Cat, Lady Caitlin, addressed the children:
"Weapons are for protecting honor and family. You should thank Lord Bai Ze for his generosity and use the weapons he gave you to protect our home and safeguard the honor of the North!"
The children bowed deeply to Bai Ze to express their gratitude, and Bai Ze nodded happily in return.
The children who received their weapons were eager to try them out. Bai Ze also sparred and played with Rob in the tavern for a while, while a few of the younger ones practiced swordsmanship under the guidance of Syrio Forel.
Before nightfall, Caitlin led the children to say goodbye to Bai Ze, who had also rubbed a few big, fluffy creatures and let them leave the tavern with Rob.
…
The next morning, Bai Ze and his group, who were preparing to head south, bid farewell to Ned. Duke Ned, along with the people of Winterfell, saw Bai Ze and his party off. After meeting up with Daenerys's group outside the city, they waved goodbye to Ned one last time.
Celine watched as Arya, who was crying, wiped away her tears and said goodbye to her good friend!
Bai Ze led his men along the King's Road for several days, resting from time to time. After crossing the river at Saltworks Town, they headed west along the River Road towards the western border.
The further west they went, the more mountains and hills appeared. After being warmly received by the Tully family in Riverrun, the group officially set off westward and entered the Western Kingdom.
Many people returned together this time: Bai Ze, Tyrion, Brienne, Celine, and some manpower and two maesters that Ned and Robert had given to Bai Ze.
Daenerys's side included Jorah Mormont, Missandei, her small number of Blood Guards, and an army of over 5000 Unsullied.
When Bronze left King's Landing, he sent him back to the Westerlands to organize people to tidy up the castles there. He redistributed the castle servants and low-ranking attendants, awaiting our return.
They traveled at a leisurely pace, and when they passed through Golden Tooth City, they left behind two knights who had fought alongside them at the Wall and 100 Unsullied soldiers to guard the western gate. In any case, the western region had nothing to offer and there was no need to worry about a large army attacking the city, so leaving a few men was just a token gesture.
Bai Ze planned to let Bolong govern Jinya City after everything was resolved, and then let him take office in Jinya City.
The group did not stop when passing through Sarsfield City and continued towards Casterly Rock. Near dusk, they finally arrived at Casterly Rock City, where Bronn and a small group of people greeted Bai Ze and the others.
Having tidied himself up, and dressed in his inherited armor, carrying a katana, Polon saw the procession approaching the city gate. He stepped forward, bowed to Bai Ze, and said:
"Welcome back to your Western Frontier, my lord. You must be tired from your journey."
Bai Ze stopped his horse and looked at Polon, whose spirit and energy were completely different from when he first saw him, and said:
"You've worked hard, Bronn. I've seen that you've taken excellent care of the Westerlands while I was away! Let's go into the city. Her Majesty Daenerys is with the group later; we can't keep her waiting."
Leading the group back to the castle, Tyrion looked at the familiar corners of the castle along the way, and all sorts of things from the past flashed through his mind. Finally, he touched the castle wall, sighed, and followed us on our way.
Upon entering the hall, Bai Ze looked at the tall and magnificent rock castle and thought it was quite impressive.
Bai Ze invited Daenerys to sit in the main seat, but Daenerys shook her head and said:
"I'm the guest, you're the host, you're in charge here!"
Bai Ze smiled at her and sat in the main seat. Daenerys sat in the first seat to the side, and everyone else took their seats as well. Bai Ze asked Bronn about the current number of people in the castle and the amount of food supplies.
Bronn said:
"We brought back a lot of supplies when we left King's Landing. Because most of the Lannisters were escorted to the Wall, there weren't many servants and attendants left behind, so we had enough food for the time being."
The surrounding cities all have supplies left over from the end of the previous war. If the men you brought back and Her Majesty Daenerys's men are dispersed and settled, it will be more than enough for six months.”
Bai Ze nodded and said:
"That's good. We don't need to worry about food supplies for now. Next, we need to consider town management and the issue of people staying behind."
"Hmm~ Tyrion, I'm entrusting all trade between Lannister Port and the Westerlands to you. I'll also give you one of the maesters Robert sent. From now on, you'll be in charge of making and spending money in the Westerlands!"
Bai Ze first assigned Tyrion a task. Tyrion grew up in the Westerlands and knew the trade dealings best, so it was best to entrust this matter to him.
Tyrion stood up, bowed, and said, "Yes, sir!"
Bai Ze nodded and continued:
"Brennie, I'm entrusting you with the duties of guarding and protecting Casterly Rock and the surrounding cities. You will also serve as the captain of the guard in Casterly Rock."
"Make sure to settle the wounded soldiers you brought back from the Great Wall battles in the various cities of the Western Frontier. There's no one going to cause trouble in the Western Frontier now; as long as the cities are guarded, that's sufficient."
Brienne stood up, bowed, and said, "I will certainly live up to your expectations!"
Bai Ze waved for her to sit down, and then continued:
"Complete this task, and you can choose between Brienne of Rock and Fairy Isle; that will be your fiefdom!"
Upon hearing Bai Ze's words, Brienne stood up and bowed, pounding her chest with her hand, her eyes filled with a determination as if she were about to join the Party!
Then Bai Ze turned to look at Bolong and said:
"Polon, I leave Golden Tooth City to you. I believe in your abilities; you can protect the northern gate of the Western Frontier for me!"
Bronn also stood up excitedly, bowed, and said:
"Thank you, sir! Bronn is at your service!"
There are quite a few empty towns in the western region, and Bai Ze, who doesn't have enough resources and manpower, can only temporarily arrange for a few key locations.
Then Bai Ze turned to look at Daenerys and said:
"Your Majesty, there is a forest between Casterly Rock and Ketchum. The three dragons can live in this forest. There is no need to worry about food. It will be the same as it was in Winterfell, until they are fully grown!"
You can have Grey Worm send troops to garrison Sarsfield and Branded City, leaving only some of your own men behind. This will also alleviate the food shortage in Casterly Rock.
For now, we can leave Horndale and Deepholm, which face King's Landing, alone. Robert and the Reach in the South are unlikely to send troops to attack the Westerlands, so we'll leave them for now.
Daenerys nodded in agreement with Bai Ze's suggestion, and arranged for the Unsullied's deputy commander "Hero" to lead 4000 men north to garrison Sfield and Branded City, while Grey Worm led 1000 men and the Blood Guard, and Missandei and several handmaids remained in Casterly Rock to take care of and guard her.
Next, as long as we feed and raise the three dragons before capturing the Dragon Mother, everything will be fine!
