Chapter 41 Intercepting Halfway, Resolving Daenerys's Inner Conflict

A few days later, after all the remains outside the Wall had been burned, King Robert met with Tormund, the surviving leader of the wildlings, and the elders of Hardhome to discuss their future whereabouts.

Several elder leaders said that most of their subordinates were willing to stay and live south of the Great Wall, as long as they were provided with a living area.

Robert, in the name of the King, issued an order that the surviving wildlings be placed under the leadership of Ned Stark in the North, and that villages and towns be established in the area north of Long Lake, south of Mole Village, and east of the King's Road.

Initial supplies were provided by Last Hearth and Kaho, with some carried before leaving the Wall.

Tormund became the leader, and several elders assisted him in managing the village. Once everything was established and productive, taxes were levied according to the population.

 …

After resolving the issues with the wildlings, King Robert marched south. He had arranged to meet Daenerys at Winterfell for a meeting of the two kings to decide on Daenerys's arrival in aid.

Bai Ze was also prepared to intercept Daenerys halfway, so that she would change her mind and stop fighting for the Iron Throne before she arrived at Winterfell!

The next morning, the southward-bound caravan set off in a grand procession. Bai Ze also sought an opportunity to speak with Daenerys alone. In the afternoon, upon reaching the shores of Long Lake, Robert ordered a rest and that they would continue their journey the next day.

Bai Ze also found an opportunity to tell Jorah Mormont that he wanted to speak with Daenerys alone and asked for her opinion.

Jorah Mormont knew that Bai Ze had written her a private letter before Daenerys returned to the North, and assumed that the request promised in the letter was something he wanted to discuss with Daenerys. Jorah didn't think too much about it and went to find Daenerys to tell her that Bai Ze wanted to talk to her alone.

Daenerys was also waiting for Bai Ze, because she hadn't thanked him for saving Viserion. They agreed to meet at the forest by the long lake.

Jorah Mormont returned and told Daenerys that Bai Ze had agreed to meet him, along with the time and place, and that Bai Ze could go there after setting up camp and having a meal.

After finishing his meal, Bai Ze arrived at the agreed-upon location, where Daenerys, Grey Worm, and Nissandra were all present. Bai Ze bowed to Daenerys.

"Your Majesty is well!"

Daenerys looked at Bai Ze, gestured for Grey Worm and Nissandra to move a little further away, and then, after Bai Ze stood up, said:

"First of all, I want to thank you for saving Viserion. You wrote to me before saying that you had a way to make dragons grow up healthy and not disturb the people. I wonder what you plan to do with it."

Bai Ze didn't rush to take out the pet food from his backpack or the large amount of food he could buy from the system shop. He planned to wait until he returned to Winterfell and settled down, then feed the dragon a few days' worth of food and meat to let Daenerys see the effects. After that, he would take Daenerys and the dragon back to the Westerlands together.

"I have stockpiled food that can help dragons grow in my Winterfell tavern. Once we arrive in Winterfell, I'll have the three dragons rest in the Wolfwood and then feed them. I'll let them feed for a few days so you can see the results."

Bai Ze paused and then said:

"Now I want to talk to you about a few other things!"

Daenerys asked, puzzled:

"what's up?"

"About your family and relatives!"

"Who? It seems that apart from the maester who voluntarily abdicated the throne at Castle Black, I'm the only Targaryen left!"

A hint of loneliness and helplessness appeared on Daenerys's face.

Bai Ze looked at her and said, "Do you know your brother, Prince Rhaegar?"

Daenerys looked at me and said:

“Brother Rhaegal died in the War of the Usurper before I was born. I learned most of what he was like from my second brother, Viserys Targaryen. Why are you asking him?”

"What would you think if I told you that there is another person in line to the Iron Throne?"

Bai Ze stated the matter directly, and Daenerys looked at him with an incredulous expression, saying:

"How could that be! Aegon and Rhaenys (the heir of Prince Rhaegar and his first wife Elia Martell) were both killed by the Lannisters long ago."

My mother died in childbirth, and I'm the only one left in our family!

Bai Ze looked at Daenerys, who was a little agitated, and slowly told her the love story between his brother, Prince Rhaegar, and Lyanna Stark, how Lyanna's child was adopted by Ned Stark, and all of this.

Daenerys listened in shock as Bai Ze finished explaining the whole story, then abruptly looked up at him and said:

"So you mean Jon Snow is my brother Rhaegar's son!"

Bai Ze nodded and said:

"Yes! His real name is Jaehaerys Targaryen, the same name as his grandfather Jaehaerys II Targaryen, which his mother Lyanna told Lord Ned Stark before she died."

You can verify this with Lord Ned after you return to Winterfell. Jon Snow was the one he took from Lyanna and brought back to Winterfell, and Lord Ned told him about his origins before leaving Castle Black.

Of course, you can also ride a dragon back to Castle Black now to confirm this with Jon Snow. Your Targaryen family has absolute control over dragons, so you can have Drogon and the other two approach Jon Snow to try.

The dragon is the best proof of your family's bloodline!

Upon hearing Bai Ze's words, Long Ma thought that since Bai Ze dared to say such a thing, it was probably true!

Daenerys bit her lip in anguish. From her second brother, she knew how popular her eldest brother, Rhaegar Targaryen, was in the Seven Kingdoms. Otherwise, the Swordmaster of the Dawn and his men wouldn't have remained loyal to him even in death.

If Prince Rhaegar were still alive and had an heir, those who might support the Targaryen family might actually turn to support their suddenly appearing nephew.

(Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark's marriage certificate was found by Sam in the Citadel in the show. If someone acknowledges it, Jon Snow is the true heir to the Iron Throne.)

Because his older brother Rhaegar Targaryen had such a good reputation before all that happened between him and Lyanna Stark!

Bai Ze, seeing Daenerys's confused state of mind, said again:

“Very few people know Jon Snow’s true identity now. Since Lord Ned has already told Jon Snow his identity, and Jon Snow hasn’t come looking for you, you should know what that means. You two are the last two Targaryens in the world!”

"Now let's talk about the second thing. Do you really want to start another earth-shattering war with the seven kingdoms over that iron chair, a war that could never end?"

I know about your affairs in Slaver's Bay. Since you were able to free all the slaves, it shows that you are a king who truly treats his people as human beings!

Although His Majesty Robert and I sent you back to Westeros because of the White Walkers, you should have experienced the hardships of raising people while ruling the city-states, not to mention you have three dragons to feed!

Daenerys still had her thoughts about the iron chair, and said:

"So what! The Iron Throne belongs to the Targaryens!"

"Once the Mad King lost the trust and support of the nobles and the people, and the Rebellion of the Seven Kingdoms began, that chair no longer belonged to you!"

Bai Ze retorted without hesitation.

Bai Ze sighed and said again:

"Do you know that he who wins the hearts of the people wins the world? So, Your Majesty Daenerys, where are the hearts of the people?"

Daenerys looked at Bai Ze in surprise, suddenly struck by his words, and thought of Nissandra, Grey Worm, and Jorah Mormont who had followed her.

Now think about Westeros. King Robert personally went to the Wall to defeat the White Walkers and the ice, saving the people of the seven kingdoms of Westeros. If I were to really go to war with Robert, perhaps no one would support the return of the Targaryen family.

Even the presence of dragons is unacceptable, because for thousands of years, dragons have been both objects of worship and objects of fear for the people!

Now, my return can only be for revenge, not to join them; the people will no longer support the Targaryens.

They would never allow a flying dragon to continue to appear above their heads, fearing that one day the dragon's flames would spray onto their heads!

"Then why did you write a letter saying you would ensure my dragon grows up safely? Didn't you pledge your loyalty to His Majesty Robert?"

Daenerys was even more confused by Bai Ze's actions. One of the people who persuaded her to give up the fight for the throne wanted her dragon to grow up safely! She was a little confused.

"Oh! Haven't I told you yet? I'm a wandering swordsman who now also runs a tavern in Winterfell!"

Bai Ze brought up his old excuse again, leaving Daenerys speechless. He could then produce all sorts of mysterious dolls, miraculous medicines that could instantly heal even dragons, and weapons and armor comparable to Valyrian steel swords that he could just give away without hesitation, and in such large quantities!

Daenerys doesn't realize that Bai Ze's ultimate goal is her and her dragons. He plans to lure her back to the Westerlands, let her see how Bai Ze can fully raise the three dragons, and then slowly pack her and the dragons up and take them away!

Daenerys thought for a moment and said:

"So what is your purpose? Or rather, what are your demands in preventing me from vying for the Iron Throne again?"

Bai Ze looked at Daenerys, who was somewhat hesitant, and said:

"The Westerlands are now my fiefdom. Because of the Lannister rebellion, most of the area is now empty except for farmers and castles."

I would like to request Your Majesty to relinquish the Iron Throne and accompany me to the Westerlands, where the three dragons will settle in the mountains near Casterly Rock. I will then provide them with food that promotes rapid growth, and after that, I will discuss the matter of our succession with Your Majesty.”

"This also provides a place for the Unsullied army to stay; otherwise, His Majesty Robert would not allow such an elite force to wander outside!"

At this moment, the three dragons flew back from the other side of the lake and began to descend directly towards where everyone was standing. Drogon, the largest of them, landed first, took a few slow steps, and stretched his head out to Daenerys, asking for a pat!

Viserion and Rhaegal landed one after another and surrounded Daenerys. Daenerys stroked all three of her dragon sons, and seeing Bai Ze's drooling eyes, she proudly smiled.

At this moment, Viserion saw Bai Ze standing to the side, and actually took the initiative to come to Bai Ze's side, lowered his head and rubbed against Bai Ze, and the purring sound that had been made by him before came from his huge body.

Hahahaha!!!

The benefits of saving the dragon's life are evident once again; licking the dragon is so nice!

Zhuo Geng looked at his good-for-nothing younger brother, let out a disdainful sigh, and turned his head in another direction. What a disgrace!

Daenerys looked at Viserion, who was clinging to Bai Ze, and then at Bai Ze's white hair, which was different from the Targaryen's silver-white hair, and said:

"If all the Targaryens hadn't died out in Westeros, I'd start to wonder if you were one too!"

Bai Ze stroked Viserion's large face and said with a grin:

There are many ways to become a family!

Daenerys immediately understood Bai Ze's thoughts from his eyes. She hadn't expected that Bai Ze would have feelings for her. Suddenly, the image of Bai Ze fighting the Night King outside the Wall flashed through Daenerys's mind, and she felt a stirring in her heart!

Daenerys quickly shook her head, looking firmly at Bai Ze and saying:

"If I were to make it clear in my upcoming meeting with Robert that I am relinquishing my claim to the Iron Throne, what do you think the people of the Seven Kingdoms would think?"
