Chapter 20 Robert's Loyalty to King's Landing: A Response

After a voyage of about ten days, Ned's fleet finally arrived at White Harbor in the North. Robert no longer had to hide and strode into the city. Earl Wyman Manderle had been waiting for a long time and took the initiative to greet him at the city gate.

"Your Majesty, Lord Ned."

As he spoke, he led the people behind him to bow to the two of them.

"Alright, old Wyman, let's hurry up and take us into town to get something to eat. I'm so sick of the smell of fish these past few days on the boat, it makes me want to throw up."

King Robert spoke as he walked. Wyman quickly sent someone to guide Robert to the banquet hall, while he himself stayed by Ned's side, seemingly having something to say to Ned.

"My lord, the equipment we received from Winterfell has been distributed. After receiving the message from Winterfell at the Wall, I sent another 50 men with equipment and supplies to the Wall. All the remaining manpower has been assembled and is ready to support the North or march south at any time."

Furthermore, we all received a letter from King's Landing stating that we do not believe you will become a rebel, so most people have remained calm. However, the situation regarding the Dreadfort is unclear, and we have not conducted much investigation, although we have left spies in the surrounding area.

Count Wiman Mandler was always meticulous in his work and never slacked off.

"Thank you for your support of the North. For our homeland, we will stand firm to the end!"

Ned patted the old count on the shoulder and said with satisfaction.

 …

A few days later, Robert sent messages from White Harbor and Stannis from Dragonstone to the surrounding duchies.

King Robert is still alive and has already reached the North. He is denouncing the Lannisters for their disloyalty and their plot to assassinate the king!

The news that Joffrey was the son of the Queen and Jaime Lannister through incest and was not worthy of the throne was spread throughout the Seven Kingdoms.

At the same time, Queen Cersei, in the name of Joffrey I, issued a double message to the Seven Kingdoms: Ned Stark's rebellion, summoning lords and their armies from all over the lands, as well as the royal domains and Lannister forces, to assemble and prepare for war against the North.

For a time, the ravens delivering messages were like battlefield telegrams, shuttling back and forth between castles. I wonder if they were paid enough overtime, because some ravens were so tired that they could no longer fly.

Upon receiving the news, the lords of the Riverlands and the Valleys first dispatched troops to both sides to verify the situation and decide whether to send their armies north or south.

Upon receiving the news, Edmin Tully, Lord of Riverrun, the maternal family of Catelyn Stark's wife in the Westerlands, immediately began to reorganize his army to defend against the Lannisters to the south.

Because they are the closest to House Lannister, they would be the first to be attacked if war broke out.

Ned Stark, heading north, didn't linger long at White Harbor. He was going to Winterfell to take charge and control the overall situation, first dealing with the minor troubles in the south, getting Robert back in his place, and then gathering everyone to deal with the major threat beyond the Wall.

Lysa Tully of the Eyrie in the Vale first stated that Robert Aileen's heir was young and that she herself would remain neutral on behalf of the Vale and not participate in the conflict between the North and South.

 …

Upon receiving the news that Robert was still alive, everyone in King's Landing was in disbelief, especially Queen Cersei and Littlefinger Baelish. At the King's Council, the atmosphere was chaotic. Cersei looked at Varys and said:

"Varys, you've been a bit lax lately. We only know a lot of information when the ravens bring it. Does that mean your little birds are no longer necessary?"

A few drops of cold sweat trickled down Varys's shiny bald head. Everyone in King's Landing had witnessed Robert's injuries, and no one could have imagined that Robert would leave King's Landing alive and well, and even escape to the North with Ned.

At this moment, James suddenly said:

"Where is Renly? I haven't seen him for days. If he's not here, Dragonstone and Storm's End must already know the news. In that case, our royal army can't go north, and we'll have to defend both ends!"

Jaime Lannister's words suddenly awakened everyone. If Robert was really not dead, then King's Landing would be like a meat sandwich sandwiched between House Baratheon. The royal army plus the messy mercenaries in the city would definitely not be a match for Stannis Baratheon.

You mean Renly Baratheon? He's all show and no substance, nobody takes him seriously. The only thing to worry about is the army coming from Storm's End in the south.

Cersei quickly arranged for the Grand Maester to send a letter to her family in the Westerlands, instructing them to prepare. She also ordered Varys to keep a close eye on the movements in the direction of Dragonstone and Storm's End, and to report immediately if anything happened.

He then summoned the Golden Robe commander, Genos Slynt, and ordered him to gather all available soldiers in King's Landing and guard all the city gates, closing them immediately if any situation arose.

Cersei then looked at Jaime and said, "The Vale won't help us. Now we need to deal with the Riverlands and try to win over the Reach and Dorne in the south!"

With their help, our pressure will be much less, and we can keep an eye on the storm to prevent them from harassing King's Landing's rear!

"Have Father act quickly to deal with the Riverlands and guard the passage from the North to the South. As long as we can block them near the Twins, we can buy ourselves time to deal with the South," Cersei told Jaime.

 …

After several days of fast travel, Ned and his party finally returned to Winterfell, where the wolves of the North were finally able to welcome back their alpha wolf.

As his father's procession approached, Rob quickly went to his father's horse, took the reins, and Ned dismounted. Looking at his son, who had grown considerably stronger, Ned patted his arm and said:

"You've taken good care of the North and your mother during this time; you're a qualified young master. I'm going to find you some suitable retainers and prepare a beautiful wife for you!"

Ned's words made everyone laugh. Caitlin stepped forward and hugged her husband. Looking at Ned's haggard face, she touched his cheek and said with tears in her eyes:

"I was worried about you every day, I'm so glad you're back safe and sound!"

Ned touched his wife's face, and without caring that everyone was still around, he leaned down and kissed Caitlin, causing a burst of cheers from the crowd!

Caitlin blushed deeply at her husband's antics, and Robert, riding up from behind, watched the two lovey-dovey couple and said:

"Alright, alright, you have plenty of time to flirt. Hurry up and find a place for your 'king' to stay."

淬~

"Damn it, a king without his own castle!"

Robert spat and mocked himself, saying that he, the king, had become a stray dog and had to ask his good brother for help to survive.

"I'm sorry! Your Majesty, I have been rude in your presence!"

Catelyn, feeling embarrassed, quickly bowed to Robert in apology. Only then did the others from Winterfell notice that King Robert was also in Lord Ned's party, and they hurriedly knelt down to pay their respects.

"Alright, get up, everyone. Let us go inside and talk. Is it getting colder and colder in the North? I didn't feel this cold last time I came. I feel like my nose is going to freeze off!"

Because of the White Walkers, the long night is approaching, the days are getting shorter, and the temperature in the North is gradually dropping. The crops in the fields are already failing to grow due to insufficient temperature!

After everyone entered the Wolfsburg council chamber and took their seats, Ned asked his son Robb about the deployment of the Northern troops. Robb explained to his father:

"The families of Grover in Deepwood, Leswell in Streamlands, Van Reed in Greywater, Seven in Seven, Manderley in White Harbor, Howood in Howood, Mormont on Bear Island, Umber in Last Hearth, and Karstark in Karhor have all sent clear messages of support for King Robert’s rule and are ready to serve him."

Only Bolton of Dreadfort has not yet shown any clear intentions, nor have any messengers or ravens delivered any letters, so I left the lords of Seven and Torren with their troops around Winterfell.

The forces of Hearthglen and Karho are gathering and poised to march south and besiege the city. The Earl of Mandalay, while sending men north to the Wall, also left men around Goat's Head; they will report to Winterfell immediately if there are any developments at Dreadfort!

"In the south, I ordered Mrs. Barbara Leswell of the Wasteland to send some men and a portion of the soldiers from White Harbor south to Carlin Bay to await orders."

And instruct Lord Holland Reed of Greywater Watch to keep a close eye on the movements in the south. If a large army marches north, hold them off if possible; if not, retreat to Carlin Bay and rendezvous with Mrs. Leswell and her men. We will immediately send reinforcements to support them.”

As Ned's eldest son and the Young Wolf of the North, Robb did not disgrace the Stark family in the slightest. His military capabilities were incredibly formidable in the original books. If it weren't for his lover and Catelyn's antics, as well as Tywin Lannister's schemes, Robb could have utterly crushed the Lannisters!

King Robert and Ned looked at the confident and well-organized Robert Stark, when Robert suddenly said:

"Oh! He reminds me of my younger days, so confident and brave. Ned, you have a good son!"

Seeing that Ned Stark had such an excellent heir, Robert, who was cuckolded to the point of only having his bastard son Gendry, sighed sadly.
