Chapter 10: An unexpected encounter with Duan Mingxuan by Duan Yiheng

The people in the hall were stunned, not understanding why Duan Yiheng had come over.

The security guards, the receptionist, and Chen Jingyi all remained motionless.

Under these circumstances, Lin Xi could not call him "elder brother".

However, Duan Yiheng easily caught the hint of grievance in her eyes.

"Mr. Duan."

Duan Yiheng stopped, his gaze falling on the security guard blocking Lin Xi's path, and asked in a deep voice, "What's going on?"

The receptionist stepped forward and said respectfully, "Mr. Duan, this young lady is being unreasonable. We will ask her to leave immediately. We apologize for taking up your time."

"Making trouble out of nothing?"

Duan Yiheng's voice suddenly softened, and a faint smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.

The laughter puzzled everyone, including Lin Xi.

He cleared his throat again and asked her, "What are you being unreasonable about?"

The obvious smile left Lin Xi speechless.

I don't understand what he meant by this sudden teasing.

Lin Xi was somewhat annoyed.

Seeing this, Duan Yiheng coughed lightly: "I thought you would need two or three days to consider it, but I didn't expect you to come today, so I didn't notify the front desk to let you in."

The familiar tone startled the receptionist and security guard, followed by fear, while Chen Jingyi's eyes flashed and her face darkened slightly.

Lin Xi had actually come to apply for the job; she wasn't lying.

When did the president's office start having a secretary position? As Duan Yiheng's direct subordinate, she hadn't received a single word about it.

Lin Xi didn't want to stay here anymore; Chen Jingyi's gaze made her feel defensive and prickly.

Duan Yiheng didn't leave, but asked the security guard about the specifics of what had happened.

The security guard looked somewhat bewildered: "Mr. Duan, we're not quite sure. We were notified to come and ask people to leave."

Duan Yiheng's gaze was cold: "Kick people out? You used that word inappropriately. The meeting between security and administrative departments was a waste of time."

Fearing being fired, the security guard quickly bowed his head and admitted his mistake: "Mr. Duan, we were wrong. We remember that the company, out of humanitarian considerations, allows unauthorized personnel to wait temporarily in special circumstances, such as inclement weather. This lady was not carrying any dangerous items, was not making any noise, and did not disrupt the company's normal office operations or reception order. Ms. Lin, we are sorry, we sincerely apologize to you."

Lin Xi was taken aback by the sudden apology. She subconsciously shook her head and said, "It's okay, I'm not angry."

Duan Yiheng was fairly satisfied with this attitude, and slightly raised his chin to signal them to return to their posts.

Upon seeing this, the receptionist apologized to Lin Xi.

Lin Xi frowned but didn't say anything.

At this moment, Qin Yang returned to the lobby after seeing off his client.

Duan Yiheng said to him, "Find out what happened here and handle it according to the company's articles of association. I'll take her upstairs first."

Before the receptionist could say anything more, Qin Yang stopped her.

Chen Jingyi remained uninvolved, nodded slightly to Qin Yang, and then followed after him.

Lin Xi heard a series of "tap tap" sounds of footsteps on the paving stones behind her, and her scalp tingled. She involuntarily moved closer to Duan Yiheng.

Duan Yiheng shifted his gaze and stopped in front of the elevator.

He appears tough and cold at the company, but he is relatively gentle with his subordinates and employees, and it is common for them to ride in the same elevator.

But he also noticed Lin Xi's resistance.

The first time, he told people to go: "Go take another elevator."

Chen Jingyi was taken aback, and even wondered if Duan Yiheng was talking to her.

"Mr. Duan, I am—"

"You don't understand what I'm saying?"

Duan Yiheng didn't even turn his head, displaying his displeasure and arrogance to the fullest extent.

Chen Jingyi clenched her fists, watching helplessly as the two went inside, and then watching the elevator doors close in front of her.

Her eyes flashed with a fierce light, as if what stood before her was not a door, but an obstacle to climb upwards.

She wanted to chop it up!

At this moment, the inferiority complex buried for many years resurfaced like a bone-deep ulcer.

Chen Jingyi knew perfectly well that she and the two people behind the door were not from the same world, or rather, not from the same social class.

But what gives Lin Xi the right to do so?

She's just an orphan, so why does she get to experience all the good things in the world?

Could it be that after all these years, she still wants to live under Lin Xi's innocent smile?

What she found most unbearable was Duan Yiheng's disregard.

Despite having attended numerous meetings with him alongside her department head, she still hadn't become a familiar face to him.

Lin Xi, who was being intensely envied in the elevator, breathed a sigh of relief.

Duan Yiheng looked down at her and asked, "Do you know the woman from earlier?"

Lin Xi looked up: "The receptionist calls her Manager Chen, don't you recognize her?"

Duan Yiheng shook his head: "I don't remember."

Each company has a different organizational structure. The fintech sector he was in charge of had many departments, and there were several different types of managers within those departments.

During meetings, he only listens and never bothers to remember what the other person looks like.

Lin Xi said "Oh": "We used to be classmates."

"What happened between you two?" Duan Yiheng asked bluntly, "Or is there some kind of grudge?"

Lin Xi downplayed the issue: "There were some unpleasant things, and I just felt uncomfortable thinking about them."

Duan Yiheng didn't press him for details, but simply nodded and asked, "Have you made up your mind about working at Yinfan?"

Lin Xi confirmed, "I've thought it through."

"Don't we need to discuss it with him...them?"

Lin Xi didn't understand what he meant and replied blankly, "I already told Grandpa."

Duan Yiheng's lips curled up slightly. So he had received guidance from a master. No wonder it wasn't so fast.

They arrived at the 36th floor, and Lin Xi followed Duan Yiheng into his office.

Lin Xi looked around curiously; the dark gray Italian pure wool carpet silently absorbed their footsteps.

A heavy desk stands neatly and tidy, with bookshelves against the wall behind it packed with books ranging from history to business warfare, from the West to the East, from ancient times to the present... everything imaginable.

Behind the sofa in the guest area is a temperature-controlled wine cabinet displaying fine wines.

She could even picture Duan Yiheng standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, holding a wine glass, overlooking the city lights below him, under the cover of night.

Duan Yiheng personally poured her a glass of water, and Lin Xi sat on the sofa somewhat reservedly.

Duan Yiheng talked to her a lot about the secretary position, from secretary training to itinerary management, from document processing to meeting organization, from daily reception to dress requirements... nothing was too big or too small.

The more Lin Xi learned, the more at peace he felt.

We chatted until sunset, when it was time to leave work.

Duan Yiheng raised his hand to check his watch, and without asking Lin Xi, directly asked Qin Yang to make a reservation at the restaurant.

He said confidently, "After you join the company, you will be the hub connecting the president's office and various departments. I will explain the details of each department to you during dinner."

Lin Xi simply couldn't refuse.

Since they were going out to eat, she told the driver to go home first.

After going downstairs, I passed the front desk again and saw only a woman in her early thirties standing there; the one who had made things difficult for her earlier was nowhere to be seen.

She wanted to ask, but couldn't find the right words, and was afraid that Duan Yiheng would ask her more questions about her and Chen Jingyi.

Because she went downstairs ten minutes early, no one saw her get into Duan Yiheng's car, which relieved Lin Xi.

It wasn't until we got to the restaurant that I felt that urge to breathe again.

It seems like fate always likes to play tricks on her.

As soon as she entered the restaurant, under the elaborate and beautiful crystal chandelier in the center of the hall, she encountered Duan Mingxuan and Zhang Mo.

She instinctively tried to pull Duan Yiheng away, but it was too late.

"Xiao Xi?"

Duan Mingxuan's tone was surprised and doubtful, but his gaze was fixed on the fingers of her gripping Duan Yiheng's arm.
