Quick Transmigration: I'm the Villain's Assistant to the Protagonist
Chapter 22 Interstellar Exploration 7
Finally, Shen Ying rested in Zhang Wei's room.
Jack, who had been sent to find someone, returned with a strange and distorted expression. The few female team members collectively stated that they were not used to sleeping with others, and that sufficient sleep was essential for better carrying out the mission.
Shen Ying was helpless. She thought she would probably have to stay in bed with her eyes open and "sleep" for the rest of the time.
After everyone left, Zhang Wei said to Shen Ying, "Why don't you come to my room tonight? I'll sleep on the sofa, so you won't be afraid."
"After the darkest hour comes the dawn!" Shen Ying exclaimed with delight. "That's right! How come I didn't think of you?"
Shen Ying lay on the bed, looking at Zhang Wei curled up on the sofa in the darkness. She felt a little guilty. Such a tall man must be uncomfortable sleeping there. He had absolutely refused to let her sleep on the sofa, saying that a gentleman shouldn't let a lady sleep on the sofa, and that if he did, he would be too uneasy to sleep. He had also comforted her, saying that when they were on missions, sleeping in the open was the norm, and sleeping on a sofa was no problem at all.
For some reason, Shen Ying felt a strange sense of familiarity sharing a bedroom with Zhang Wei, as if they had always been like this. This feeling was odd, since she had never slept in the same room with Zhang Wei before.
Upon reaching the realm of the mysterious star system, the spaceship silently traversed the abyss of space, where all was still and eternal. In the darkness, a writhing shadow stealthily crept into the spaceship.
"Ah!!!" A piercing scream of pain shattered the tranquility inside the spaceship.
Inside the command center, the expedition team members tensed instantly upon hearing the noise, all adopting a state of high alert. Zhang Wei instinctively shielded Shen Ying behind him and instructed his team members to go check and report the situation.
After the team members left, Zhang Wei had someone bring up the surveillance footage inside the spaceship. As the footage appeared frame by frame, they witnessed a horrifying scene.
An unidentified monster resembling a giant octopus roamed the spaceship's corridor. Its massive body nearly filled the entire passageway. It possessed sharp fangs and claws, and its body was covered in a sticky, dark green liquid that emitted a pungent odor. Its head was filled with human-like eyeballs, their red pupils gleaming eerily. A team member in uniform had his upper body devoured by the monster. Presumably, he was the one who had just made the sound.
"Jack, you guys come with me. Cruise, you guys stay here and protect Shen Ying!" Zhang Wei commanded solemnly in a deep voice.
Zhang Wei glanced at the worried Shen Ying, gave her a reassuring look, and then led his men out.
The team members quickly grabbed their weapons and went into battle. Shen Ying was shielded behind several team members, her eyes filled with fear and tension. The terror she felt when she first saw that disgusting monster still lingered in her mind. As an ordinary, law-abiding citizen of modern times, she had never even seen a science fiction horror movie; how could she possibly withstand such a terrifying scene?
Zhang Wei gripped the pulse sword tightly, its blade gleaming with a cold, azure light, as if formed from pure energy. His gaze was resolute and sharp, like a beast locking onto its prey.
The pulse sword seemed to come alive in his hands, with a layer of subtle energy ripples surrounding its blade. Each swing caused a slight tremor in the air, emitting a buzzing electromagnetic sound. The sword was incredibly powerful; wherever it went, the air was instantly ionized, leaving behind brief streaks of blue light.
As the monster lunged forward, he moved with ghostly speed, his steps agile yet steady. He sidestepped the monster's attack, simultaneously thrusting his pulse sword forward. The powerful energy instantly severed the monster's tentacles, which fell to the ground and dissolved into a foul-smelling, sticky black wastewater.
Although Zhang Wei kept cutting off its tentacles, the monster would cut off one tentacle and another would immediately appear. The previously severed tentacles would regenerate at an astonishing speed and rejoin the battle, endlessly and extremely annoying.
Zhang Wei's movements were fluid and precise. With the help of the pulse sword's built-in intelligent assistance system, he made the best choice of attack angle and force in an instant.
In the midst of the fierce battle, his hair danced in the wind, his resolute eyes fixed on the monster. The pulse sword in his hand transformed into unstoppable beams of light. At that moment, the monster opened its blood-red maw and spewed out a cloud of black smoke, instantly filling the entire passage and making it difficult for anyone to breathe.
"Cover your mouth and nose, don't panic!" Zhang Wei commanded as he charged toward the monster with his sword.
Zhang Wei was agile, constantly dodging the monster's attacks and launching counterattacks. The monster was incredibly fast, but Zhang Wei's formidable fighting prowess made his attacks relentless, leaving the monster nowhere to hide. If Shen Ying were here, she would be utterly astonished; this completely shattered her perception of Zhang Wei as a gentle angel. At this moment, Zhang Wei was like a mighty warrior! Although she had witnessed Zhang Wei's fighting power on Ers, this was nothing compared to this massive monster. The creatures on Ers were clearly just minions.
The monster grew increasingly ferocious under Zhang Wei's attacks. In an instant, chaos erupted.
"Tom, attack from the left and draw its attention!" Zhang Wei calmly commanded.
Tom responded quickly and charged toward the monster.
"Jack, aim the laser cannon at its eyes!" Zhang Wei then ordered.
Jack received orders to adjust his weapon and aim at the monster's eye to fire.
However, this monster was exceptionally cunning, constantly changing its position to attack the team members.
During the fierce battle, Zhang Wei focused intently on observing the monster's movements. Sure enough, he noticed that whenever the monster launched an attack, a brief flash of light would appear on its abdomen.
"Concentrate firepower and attack its abdomen!" Zhang Wei issued the order based on his strong intuition.
The team members obeyed orders and attacked the monster's abdomen. Under the fierce onslaught, the monster roared in pain and collapsed to the ground. Its body, upon death, turned into a foul-smelling, sticky black sewage.
Leaving a few people behind to clean up the mess, Zhang Wei led Jack and the others back to the cockpit.
When Shen Ying saw that he had returned, she excitedly ran over. She pulled Zhang Wei and looked him over again, from top to bottom and left to right, and only after confirming that he was alright did she say, "Thank goodness you're okay, you scared me to death! What was that thing?"
"There are many unknown creatures in the universe, like that one just now..."
Before Zhang Wei could finish speaking, a sharp, piercing alarm suddenly blared in the quiet and orderly command center, a sound that seemed to tear eardrums apart. All the screens instantly began flashing alarming red lights, rapidly and frantically.
"Report! The spacecraft's energy system has been attacked for unknown reasons, and energy output is dropping sharply!" a team member shouted anxiously, his voice filled with tension and fear.
"Oh no! The life support system is also malfunctioning; oxygen generation and temperature regulation are failing!" another team member shouted immediately, beads of sweat rolling down his forehead.
Zhang Wei frowned, his eyes revealing an unprecedented seriousness: "Immediately investigate the cause of the malfunction and do everything possible to repair it!"
The team members frantically operated various instruments, the sounds of keyboard typing and instrument humming mingling together.
"What exactly happened?" Shen Ying asked, her eyes wide and her voice trembling.
Zhang Wei took a deep breath and said calmly, "Don't panic, we'll find a solution."
A tense atmosphere filled the command center, and anxiety was written on everyone's face. Everyone knew that the situation was extremely critical.
