Chapter 13 If not now, when?
When I woke up again, the sun had set, and the afterglow of the sun had dyed the evening glow on the horizon a crimson red.
Chunxiu knocked on the door and entered, only to find Gu Yan leaning against the window, lost in thought. "Miss, you're awake. Thank you for the snacks. They're truly delicious, as expected of Chun Chao Pavilion's craftsmanship."
"It's delicious, I'll bring you some more next time." Gu Yan came back to his senses and replied to Chunxiu with a smile.
"I'm afraid there won't be a next time. Miss, you don't know yet, do you? I just heard that Chun Chao Pavilion has been occupied by a group of men in black, and any guest who didn't obey the order to leave immediately was killed." Chunxiu said, making a throat-slitting gesture.
Gu Yan frowned upon hearing this. She and Bai Heming had been perfectly normal when they left, so how did things change so drastically after she woke up?
Could it be that the group of men in black were also after the Seven Star Stone?
Chao Chun Pavilion, the premier restaurant in Wuzhou, has been occupied. The Bai family, with its vast wealth and power, has likely become a target for others, and their safety is probably imminent. Perhaps we should take this opportunity to leave the Bai family and Wuzhou, and head towards Zhongjing. Along the way, we can try to find news of Mu Mu and Yue Ya.
Having made up her mind, Gu Yan turned to look at Chunxiu, who had been by her side since she transmigrated. She had too many secrets, and it would be unsafe for Chunxiu to stay with her. It would be safer to let Chunxiu leave the manor.
Without hesitation, the next morning, Gu Yan asked Chunxiu to have her few pieces of jewelry exchanged for money. She then carefully organized the little money she had and kept it close to her body along with her jade pendant. While Chunxiu was away, she quickly packed a few clothes and belongings into a bundle and hid them. Finally, she went to Master Bai's place and, taking advantage of his previous illness, pleaded with him to obtain Chunxiu's indenture.
That evening, Gu Yan quietly pulled Chunxiu into the room and carefully handed her the piece of paper that held Chunxiu's fate: "Xiuer, thank you for taking care of me these past few days. Keep this safe. From now on, you're free to go wherever you want."
Chunxiu looked at the things in Gu Yan's hands, hesitant to touch them, and asked anxiously, "Miss, is there something wrong with Chunxiu? Don't you want Chunxiu anymore?"
"Oh, silly girl. Here you go." Gu Yan said, pulling Chunxiu's hand and stuffing the contract into her hand. "You did a very good job. It's not that I don't want you, it's just that I have other things to do right now and it's inconvenient for me to take you with me."
"Miss, where are you going?" Chunxiu asked, seemingly understanding but not quite.
"Heavenly secrets cannot be revealed." Gu Yan winked mysteriously. "However, Wuzhou is not very safe recently. You must be careful after leaving the manor. I have some money here. It's not much, but it's a small token of my appreciation."
“Miss…” Chunxiu looked at the purse in her hand, her eyes brimming with tears. Ever since she entered the Bai family and was transferred to the Second Miss's side, she had complained. But ever since the young lady recovered from her serious illness, she had become somewhat different. Her personality had changed, her way of speaking had changed, and she had even helped Chunxiu escape her slave status, released her from the mansion, and given her money.
"Don't cry, don't cry, you won't be pretty if you cry." Gu Yan picked up a handkerchief and gently wiped away Chunxiu's tears. "You must live well out there, who knows, I might have to come and stay with you someday. Alright, it's getting late, get some rest tonight, and tomorrow... leave as soon as possible." Gu Yan choked up a little as he finished speaking.
To avoid a scene where the two of them hugged and cried, Gu Yan waved his hand and persuaded Chunxiu to leave.
The next morning, Chunxiu left after saying goodbye to Gu Yan, carrying her small bundle. Watching Chunxiu's departing figure, Gu Yan clenched his fists and encouraged himself, "Come on, you'll be setting off in a few days!"
Unexpectedly, before Gu Yan could even leave, the Bai residence was broken into. A group of burly men stormed in, each like a demon, wielding long knives and hacking at anyone in sight, their blades stained with blood. It seemed Master Bai had received prior warning, escaping only with Madam Bai and their two legitimate children through the back door, leaving only concubines, illegitimate daughters, maids, and servants to be slaughtered.
Screams echoed in his ears as everyone fled for their lives. Gu Yan heard that Bai Heming had already escaped with Master Bai, so he carried the bundle he had prepared and carefully made his way along the wall, hidden by trees and flowers, searching for a path that would allow him to leave the Bai residence safely.
Suddenly, a childish voice reached her ears: "You bad guy, let me go, let me go."
Gu Yan hurriedly chanted in her mind, "Don't care, don't care, don't be a saint." But her feet still moved towards the sound. Gu Yan hid outside the courtyard and looked inside through the carved stone window on the wall.
There were only two people inside. The shorter one had his back to her, his hands restraining Bai Hongsheng, who was struggling and shouting. The other, more burly, bald man was cursing and dragging the disheveled Aunt Liu into the house; they had already reached the bedroom door.
Gu Yan pulled her head back and crouched down. Her whole body was tense, like a fully drawn bowstring. She took a deep breath, gripping the celadon vase she used for self-defense tightly. Then, she rushed into the courtyard, raised her hand, and swung it forcefully. The large vase struck the short man heavily on the back of the head. With a crash, the vase shattered, and the short man collapsed unconscious.
Gu Yan quickly grabbed the long knife the man had placed on the ground and looked around warily, afraid that the sound of the porcelain bottle breaking would attract other bad guys. She kicked Bai Hongsheng, who was standing there in a daze, and whispered, "Quick, find a place to hide."
Then, carrying the knife, he rushed into the room where the bald man was without looking back. Fortunately, the bald man's attention was on Aunt Liu, and Gu Yan gripped the knife handle and stabbed the man directly in the back.
This stab didn't seem to kill the man immediately, and Gu Yan was terrified. He quickly pulled out the knife and stabbed the man several more times until he lay motionless on the ground. Blood dripped from the tip of the knife, and Gu Yan trembled all over, beads of cold sweat forming on his forehead. Goosebumps covered his entire body, and his heart pounded wildly with anxiety.
Oh no, she killed someone.
Thinking of this, Gu Yan immediately threw away the long knife in his hand. Looking at his blood-stained hands, he hurriedly grabbed the corner of his clothes to wipe them clean.
Aunt Liu, who was standing to the side, still seemed to be angry. Ignoring her half-open clothes, she picked up the long knife and stabbed the man a few more times before stopping.
"Second Miss, we shouldn't stay here any longer. Let's go quickly." Aunt Liu quickly gathered her clothes and pulled Gu Yan to leave.
Gu Yan was startled by the sunlight streaming through the doorway, and came to her senses. She felt ice-cold all over and trembled as she opened her mouth: "Auntie, I just... killed someone."
Aunt Liu looked at the second young lady who had saved her, and then at her son, who was hiding to the side, his face pale but trying to appear calm. She felt a pang of heartache and took Gu Yan's hands, rubbing them together gently. "Second young lady, don't be afraid. If they don't die, we'll be the ones who die."
Gu Yan knew she shouldn't think too much about the current situation, but she felt as if she had been choked and couldn't say anything. She could only give a stiff nod to Aunt Liu and follow her towards the back gate of the Bai family.
But the further they went towards the back gate, the more villains they encountered. Seeing that there was nowhere left to hide, Aunt Liu hugged Bai Hongsheng tightly, kissed his forehead, patted Gu Yan's shoulder, and whispered, "It's alright, don't worry. At worst, the three of us will be together on the road to the underworld."
Gu Yan was unsure whether to nod or shake her head. She lowered her head and opened the long sword in her hand, pondering whether to take a gamble, when suddenly a series of noisy footsteps came from the side.
The sounds were chaotic, growing louder as they approached! Accompanied by footsteps, there were occasional clashes of swords and the sound of blades piercing flesh. Then, Bai Heming, covered in blood, appeared before Gu Yan and Aunt Liu.
big brother?
Seeing someone launching a sneak attack, Gu Yan rushed out without thinking, blocking the attacker's attack on Bai Heming's back with a single strike, but in doing so, he also exposed himself. He felt like crying, but forced himself to remain calm, constantly observing his surroundings, trying to find a way to survive.
Gu Yan and his companion fought and retreated, but the enemy was too numerous to kill. Bai Heming's once elegant blue robe was now stained darker with blood from his wounds, and his handsome, fair face appeared even more stunning against the backdrop of blood. His sharp sword was chipped, and he looked as if he were about to collapse.
Gu Yan sensed that Bai Heming was in bad shape, turned around and stepped to his side, supporting him with one hand. "Big brother, how are you?"
Bai Heming shook his head slightly and said in a slightly hoarse voice, "It's not good. It seems I can't safely take you out of the manor."
"Then we won't go out." Gu Yan supported the half-conscious Bai Heming, shifting his weight onto herself. Looking at the approaching enemies, she shouted, "Come on, I'm not afraid of you!"
The leader looked at Bai Heming, who could no longer stand upright, and Gu Yan, who was pretending to be strong, and a wicked glint appeared in his eyes: "Since you are young masters and young ladies of the manor, you should stay here and keep us brothers company. It would be such a waste if your pretty faces were scratched."
"Pah! A toad trying to eat swan meat, doesn't it even know how to look at itself in the mirror?"
"Fierce and energetic. Brothers, pay attention! Capture them alive. Whoever catches them first gets their first time." As soon as the leader finished speaking, the enemies swarmed in. Seeing the flashing blades about to fall, Gu Yan turned to the side, protecting Bai Heming behind him, and closed his eyes in despair, waiting for the pain to come.
Sisters, you must avenge me! Otherwise, I will die with my eyes open in disgrace if I die at the hands of these bad people!
Huh? The pain I imagined didn't happen. Gu Yan secretly opened his eyes and saw a blue figure blocking his way, followed by a white figure appearing on the other side.
Two figures, wielding longswords, charged into the crowd. Their swordsmanship was elegant and their movements agile. After several rounds, the enemy was killed or wounded, while the two remained unscathed.
Gu Yan knew that this place was not a good place to stay, so while the two young heroes were fighting, he quickly helped Bai Heming up and called Aunt Liu and Bai Hongsheng to walk towards the back door.
Unexpectedly, someone attacked from behind, slashing at Gu Yan with a knife. Gu Yan reacted quickly, pushing Bai Heming, who was leaning against her, away and raising her knife to block. The swords clashed with a clang. Gu Yan gritted her teeth and fought back desperately. Seeing that Gu Yan was tough, the attacker turned and slashed at Bai Hongsheng, who was easier to hit. Gu Yan was startled and quickly gave chase.
"do not want!"
But she was still a step too late. To protect her son, Aunt Liu shielded Bai Hongsheng with her own body, taking the blow for him. Watching Aunt Liu slowly fall and hearing Bai Hongsheng's shrill cries, Gu Yan seemed to sink into endless darkness. He recklessly raised his knife and slashed at the villain until the man was unrecognizable before he stopped.
Having dealt with their immediate enemies, the two young heroes, though equally distressed by what had just transpired, decided to leave to prevent the commotion from attracting more enemies. The white-clad hero picked up Bai Heming in his arms, while the blue-clad hero, with one arm supporting the distraught Bai Hongsheng, blocked Gu Yan's path with the other, and said expressionlessly, "It's time to go."
Gu Yan remained motionless, as if he hadn't heard anything. His eyes were fixed on the blood on the tip of the knife in her hand. Like tears, the glaring scarlet dripped onto the ground with a "plop".
Seeing that reasoning with her was futile, the young swordsman in blue seized the opportunity when she was distracted and delivered a sharp chop to the back of Gu Yan's neck, knocking her unconscious instantly. The young swordsman in blue, carrying Gu Yan on his back and holding Bai Hongsheng in one hand, quickly left the Bai residence, this place of trouble, with the young swordsman in white.
