Chapter 51 A Glimmer of Light in the Ruins
In that land long shrouded in the shadow of war, the ruins of the city resembled exposed wounds on the earth. The crumbling walls stood silently under the dim sky, the former prosperity vanished like a dream. The wind, carrying the stench of gunpowder and decay, howled and whistled through the ruins, like countless wronged souls lamenting the past.
Lin Yu struggled to climb through the ruins, his clothes tattered and covered in dust and blood. Each step sent shivers of pain through his injured leg, but his eyes held a resolute determination as he gripped the worn rifle he'd salvaged from an enemy corpse. Beside him followed a frail little girl, her eyes filled with fear yet also with a deep dependence on Lin Yu. Her name was Xiaoyan. The war had cruelly taken her family; if Lin Yu hadn't found and protected her in the ruins, she might have perished in this chaotic world.
"Uncle, I'm scared..." Xiaoyan's trembling voice faintly rang out in the wind.
Lin Yu stopped, turned around, and gently stroked Xiaoyan's head with his dusty hands. "Don't be afraid, Uncle's here. We'll definitely find a safe place." Although his voice was hoarse and tired, the determination in his words gave Xiaoyan some courage.
They searched for food and clean water amidst the ruins, the pressure of survival ever-present. Just as Lin Yu laboriously lifted a slab of stone, several rats scurried away, revealing a moldy loaf of bread underneath. He picked it up with delight, carefully removed the moldy parts, and handed it to Xiaoyan, saying, "Eat, child." Xiaoyan took the bread, hesitated for a moment, then handed it back to Lin Yu, "Uncle, you eat too. You're more tired than me." Lin Yu felt a warmth in his heart, his eyes slightly moist, "Uncle isn't hungry. You eat first; you need strength to walk when you're full."
However, danger always lurks within these desolate ruins. Not far away, several figures move among the rubble; their forms are sleazy, their eyes revealing greed and cruelty—a group of bandits fallen into depravity during a chaotic era. They plunder the ruins, leaving no stone unturned, even at the cost of innocent lives to satisfy their greed.
Lin Yu instantly became alert. He pulled Xiaoyan behind a crumbling wall, his eyes revealing vigilance and tension. The bandits' footsteps grew closer, and their voices became clearly audible.
"This godforsaken place has less and less to scavenge!"
"Hmph, keep looking, maybe someone is hiding some treasure."
Lin Yu gripped his rifle tightly. He knew that if these bandits discovered them, they would be doomed. Xiaoyan clung to Lin Yu's clothes, her body trembling uncontrollably. Her face was deathly pale, and her eyes were filled with terror. Lin Yu gently patted her shoulder, signaling her to be quiet, then held his breath and waited silently for the bandits to leave.
Time seemed to freeze at that moment, each second feeling incredibly long. Finally, the bandits' footsteps faded into the distance, and Lin Yu breathed a sigh of relief. But he knew they couldn't stay there for too long; they had to find a safer hiding place as soon as possible.
They continued their journey through the ruins, the sky overcast and threatening a downpour. Lin Yu gazed at the sky, his heart filled with worry. In this harsh environment, rain would only bring more difficulties and dangers.
"Uncle, can we find a place to stay?" Xiaoyan looked up at Lin Yu and asked.
Looking at Xiaoyan's expectant eyes, Lin Yu nodded firmly, "Yes, I definitely can."
Just then, Lin Yu spotted a relatively intact building in the distance, which might provide them with temporary shelter from the wind and rain. He pulled Xiaoyan along and quickened his pace towards the building.
When they entered the building, they found several people already inside. These people were dressed in tattered clothes and looked haggard, but their eyes were friendly. One of the older men stepped forward, looked at Lin Yu and Xiaoyan, and asked, "Are you also here to seek refuge?" Lin Yu nodded. "Yes, it's too dangerous outside."
The older man asked them to sit down, then took out some dry food and handed it to them. "Eat up, everyone has their struggles." Lin Yu gratefully accepted the food, shared some with Xiaoyan, and then wolfed it down.
During their conversation, Lin Yu learned that these people were all survivors of the war, hiding here to escape the fighting and trying to survive in this chaotic world. They shared their experiences and what information they knew, and in this dark time, mutual companionship and support became the only warmth in their hearts.
However, the peace didn't last long. That night, as everyone slept soundly from exhaustion, a sudden commotion of footsteps and shouts erupted outside. Lin Yu awoke instantly, grabbed his rifle, and cautiously approached the door. Through the crack in the door, he saw flames shooting into the sky outside, and a group of bandits marching towards their hideout.
"Oh no, the bandits are here!" Lin Yu shouted.
The group awoke with a start and frantically grabbed their weapons, preparing to fight back. But they knew all too well that their strength was utterly insignificant in the face of these ruthless bandits.
The bandits quickly surrounded the building, shouting outside for the people inside to surrender. Lin Yu and the others huddled together, their eyes filled with determination. They knew that surrender meant death; only by fighting to the death could they have a chance of survival.
"Uncle, I'm scared..." Xiaoyan hugged Lin Yu tightly, tears streaming down her face.
Lin Yu gently stroked Xiaoyan's head. "Don't be afraid, Xiaoyan. Uncle will protect you and won't let them hurt you."
A battle was imminent, and the bandits began their attack on the building. Lin Yu and the others took cover behind the walls, fighting back fiercely. Gunshots echoed through the night sky, and sparks flashed in the darkness. But the bandits' numbers grew, and their firepower intensified, gradually putting Lin Yu and his group in a difficult situation.
Suddenly, a bullet flew in and struck Lin Yu's arm. He groaned in pain, but didn't lower his gun. Xiao Yan, seeing Lin Yu injured, cried out in terror, "Uncle, you're hurt!"
"I'm fine, Xiaoyan. Don't worry," Lin Yu said through gritted teeth.
Just as they were feeling hopeless, a burst of intense gunfire suddenly rang out in the distance. Chaos erupted behind the bandits, as if another force was attacking them. Lin Yu and his men seized the opportunity to launch a counterattack, and the bandits, seeing the situation was dire, fled in all directions.
A short while later, a group of people in military uniforms appeared before them. Leading them was a young officer with resolute and piercing eyes, radiating an aura of reassurance.
"Are you alright?" the officer asked with concern as he stepped forward.
Lin Yu looked at the officers, his heart filled with gratitude. "Thank you. If you hadn't arrived in time, we would probably all be dead today."
The officer smiled and said, "We are here to liberate this land, and protecting the people is our responsibility."
Led by officers, Lin Yu and the other survivors were transferred to a safe camp. There, they received food, water, and medical treatment. Xiao Yan held Lin Yu's hand tightly, looking around at everything, the fear in her eyes gradually fading, replaced by a glimmer of hope.
As the days passed, Lin Yu's injuries gradually improved. In the camp, he saw many other survivors like himself, all striving to rebuild their lives. The officers and soldiers not only provided them with basic necessities but also organized training programs to teach them knowledge and skills, helping them regain their confidence in life.
Lin Yu actively participated in various labor and learning activities, hoping to become stronger and contribute his strength to protecting Xiaoyan and other survivors. Meanwhile, Xiaoyan gradually regained her childlike innocence and liveliness in this warm family; her smile, like a flower blooming in spring, brought life and hope to this camp filled with hardship.
However, the shadow of war had not completely dissipated. Although the land had been liberated, remnants of enemy forces remained active in the surrounding areas. The officer received orders from his superiors to lead his troops to wipe out these remaining enemy forces and completely eliminate the threat of war.
"I want to go with you!" Lin Yu said to the officer after learning the news.
The officer looked at Lin Yu with a hint of surprise in his eyes. "Your injuries have only just healed. This mission is very dangerous. You should stay here and take care of Xiaoyan."
Lin Yu shook his head. "Xiaoyan will be safe here. I can't keep hiding in the back. I want to do my part for the peace of this land."
The officer was moved by Lin Yu's determination and finally agreed to his request. On the night before his departure, Lin Yu came to Xiao Yan's bedside, looking at her sleeping face, his heart filled with reluctance and worry.
"Xiaoyan, Uncle has to go do something very important. Be good here and wait for Uncle to come back." Lin Yu gently kissed Xiaoyan's forehead.
The next morning, Lin Yu and his troops embarked on their journey. They traversed mountains and forests, forded rivers, and advanced towards the location of the enemy's remaining forces. Along the way, they encountered numerous enemy attacks, but through their unwavering will and exceptional combat skills, they escaped danger time and again.
Finally, they found the enemy's hiding place. It was a camp hidden in a valley, surrounded by heavily fortified defenses, making a fierce battle inevitable.
The officer devised a detailed battle plan, and Lin Yu and his soldiers cautiously approached the enemy camp according to it. As they neared the enemy's lines, they were discovered. Instantly, gunfire erupted, and bullets rained down upon them.
Lin Yu lay prone on the ground, aimed at the enemy, and pulled the trigger. His eyes shone with determination and fearlessness; he held only one belief: to annihilate these enemies and bring true peace to this land. The battle was exceptionally fierce, with both sides paying a heavy price. But Lin Yu and his soldiers did not retreat; they advanced step by step towards the enemy camp.
At a critical moment, Lin Yu spotted an enemy firing point that was significantly hindering their attack. Without hesitation, he grabbed a grenade and rushed towards the firing point.
"Lin Yu, come back! It's too dangerous!" the officer shouted.
Lin Yu ignored them, his figure weaving through the hail of bullets. As he approached the firing point, he forcefully threw a grenade inside. With a deafening roar, the enemy's firing point was destroyed, and Lin Yu was knocked to the ground by the force of the explosion.
The soldiers seized the opportunity to launch a charge, and the enemy's defenses were finally breached. They engaged in fierce close combat within the camp, eliminating the remaining enemies one by one.
After the battle, Lin Yu was carried back to camp by the soldiers. He had multiple wounds and was unconscious. The officers immediately arranged for a doctor to treat him, and everyone was worried about his life.
Back at the camp, Xiaoyan eagerly awaited Lin Yu's return every day. She would often run to the camp gate, gazing into the distance, hoping to see that familiar figure appear. Whenever a soldier returned, she would run over to ask about Lin Yu, but each time she received a disappointing answer.
Days passed, and Lin Yu's injuries remained severe. The doctors did everything they could, but he still didn't wake up. Xiao Yan watched Lin Yu lying motionless in bed, her heart filled with fear and helplessness. Every day, she stayed by his bedside, praying for him, hoping he would wake up soon.
Finally, on a bright and sunny morning, Lin Yu's fingers twitched slightly. Xiao Yan keenly noticed this subtle change and excitedly cried out, "Uncle, Uncle, wake up!"
Lin Yu slowly opened his eyes and looked at Xiaoyan's tear-streaked face, a warm feeling welling up in his heart. "Xiaoyan, Uncle is back..." His voice was weak and hoarse.
Xiaoyan threw herself into Lin Yu's arms and burst into tears, "Uncle, I thought you would never wake up again..."
Lin Yu gently stroked Xiaoyan's head, "Silly child, Uncle promised you he would come back."
As Lin Yu recovered, the land gradually came back to life. People began rebuilding their homes and sowing seeds of hope. Lin Yu and Xiao Yan also started a new life on this land, and their story became a legend told by the people, inspiring everyone to bravely pursue that glimmer of light amidst the ruins and never give up their yearning for peace and a better future…
