Chapter 249 The Mystery of the Foggy City: The Night Chase
In Whitechapel, East London, a thick fog blanketed the entire area like a heavy grey veil. The streetlights cast a weak glow, flickering in the mist as if about to be swallowed by darkness. The area was permeated with poverty, crime, and despair; danger lurked there every night.
Young detective Oliver Wilder, clad in a long black trench coat and a deerstalker hat, navigates the labyrinthine alleyways. His eyes are sharp as a hawk's, scrutinizing every clue. Recently, a series of bizarre murders have occurred in the Whitechapel district, all victims being young women, their deaths gruesome: throats slit, abdomens cut open, organs missing. The police are baffled, and the case has reached a stalemate. But Oliver, with his keen observation and unique deductive abilities, is determined to uncover the truth behind these bloody crimes.
That night, Oliver received a tip from an informant that there might be clues related to the case near the docks. He immediately went to the docks, where the air was thick with the fishy smell and stench of decay. Huge cargo ships loomed in and out of the mist, like sleeping behemoths. Oliver searched the docks thoroughly when suddenly he heard a faint cry for help coming from an abandoned warehouse. He cautiously approached the warehouse, pushed open the door, and was met with a pungent smell of blood.
In a corner of the warehouse, a young woman lay bound, her face contorted with terror and despair. A glimmer of hope flickered in her eyes when she saw Oliver, and she struggled desperately to speak. Just as Oliver was about to untie her, a strange laugh echoed from within the warehouse. "You think you can stop me, detective?" a deep voice rang out in the darkness. Oliver whirled around, only to catch a glimpse of a blurry figure disappearing into the mist.
He knew the killer was here, and had just observed him closely. This killer was extremely cunning, never leaving any obvious trace, like a ghost. Oliver began a meticulous search of the warehouse, trying to find any clues. He found some strange footprints on the floor, not the marks of ordinary shoes. Analyzing the footprints, Oliver deduced that the killer might be wearing specially made shoes, which might be one reason for his swift movements and lack of visible traces.
After some effort, Oliver successfully rescued the kidnapped woman. The woman, named Emily, was a factory worker. She told Oliver that she was attacked by a masked man on her way home from get off work and taken to this warehouse. Emily only remembered that the man was tall and had a strange medicinal smell about him. Oliver took Emily home and arranged for the police to protect her.
Back at his detective agency, Oliver began piecing together the case's clues. He discovered that the victims seemed to have no obvious connection; they came from different backgrounds and worked in different professions. However, the way they were murdered was strikingly similar. Oliver speculated that the killer might have chosen these women as targets for some ulterior motive. Perhaps the killer was conducting some kind of insane experiment, and the victims' organs were his experimental subjects.
To verify his hypothesis, Oliver decided to investigate major hospitals and laboratories in London. He first went to St. Mary's Hospital and consulted with Dr. Henry Morton, a renowned anatomy specialist. Dr. Morton's expression turned grave after hearing Oliver's description. He told Oliver that some human organs had indeed recently gone missing from the hospital, and the manner of their loss was highly suspicious. Dr. Morton also mentioned that he had encountered a man with peculiar behavior at an academic conference who displayed an unusual enthusiasm for the study of human organs.
Oliver received some descriptions of the strange man from Dr. Morton and began investigating within London's scientific community. After some effort, he finally located a scientist named Victor Frankenstein. Frankenstein lived in a secluded manor on the outskirts of London. Oliver decided to travel to the manor to investigate the scientist himself.
When Oliver arrived at the manor, he found it filled with an eerie atmosphere. The manor gates were tightly shut, and the surrounding trees appeared particularly menacing in the mist. Oliver knocked on the manor gate, and after a long while, a tall man opened it. This man was Victor Frankenstein. His eyes revealed a kind of madness and paranoia that sent chills down one's spine.
Oliver revealed his identity and questioned Frankenstein about the missing organs at the hospital and the Whitechapel murders. Frankenstein listened, a sinister smile spreading across his face. "You think you can understand my grand plan, Detective?" he said frantically. "I'm conducting an experiment that will change the fate of humanity, and these organs are essential materials for my experiment."
Oliver realized he had finally found the killer. He tried to arrest Frankenstein, but Frankenstein was prepared. He pressed a button hidden in the wall, and a piercing alarm blared throughout the manor. Then, a group of bizarre creatures rushed out from every corner of the manor. These creatures looked as if they were pieced together from various human organs; they were agile and incredibly strong.
Oliver finds himself in a fierce battle. Using his wit and courage, he fights the monsters to the death. During the battle, Oliver discovers that while the monsters are powerful, their actions seem to be controlled in some way. He deduces that Frankenstein must be manipulating them somewhere.
After a grueling struggle, Oliver finally found Frankenstein's laboratory. Inside, he witnessed a horrifying scene. Various human organs were laid out on the worktables, and the walls were covered with bizarre blueprints and diagrams. Frankenstein stood in the center of the laboratory, laughing maniacally. "You can never stop me, Detective! My experiment is about to succeed, and then the whole world will be under my control!"
Undeterred, Oliver engaged Frankenstein in a fierce battle. At a crucial moment, Oliver discovered the device Frankenstein was using to control the monsters. He seized the opportunity to destroy it, and the monsters instantly lost control and collapsed to the ground. Seeing that all was lost, Frankenstein attempted to escape. However, Oliver firmly grasped him and brought him to justice.
With Frankenstein's capture, the Whitechapel murders were finally solved. Oliver, through his intelligence and courage, successfully uncovered the truth behind this series of bloodshed. However, he knows that countless evils still lurk in the dark corners of London. He will continue to uphold his beliefs and fight for the peace of the city.
From then on, Oliver's fame spread throughout London. People called him "the Guardian of the Foggy City." But Oliver did not become complacent; he knew that as a detective, his mission would never end. In the days to come, he would continue to face various challenges, unravel mystery after mystery, and protect every corner of the city.
Another foggy night, and the streets of London were still shrouded in thick fog. Oliver, wearing his black trench coat, walked along the familiar streets. His eyes were firm and sharp, as if telling the evil in the darkness: No matter how well you hide, I will drag you out one by one. And London, this ancient city, slept soundly in the fog, awaiting the dawn of a new day.
