I've been transported to the orc continent.

Chapter 26 Persimmons and Dried Persimmons

Besides rendering animal fat, Bai Ling also taught the beastmen of the Great River Tribe how to stew meat and make meat-filled pancakes. The beastmen of the Great River Tribe became much more hospitable to Bai Ling, and Xue even gave Bai Ling a basket of persimmons.

The persimmons in this world are about half the size of a palm, and are very red. Bai Ling took a bite, and the persimmons tasted quite sweet.

In Bai Ling's memory, there didn't seem to be any persimmon trees in the Gaoshu tribe, and he couldn't remember whether he had ever eaten persimmons.

Seeing that Bai Ling really liked persimmons, Xue said, "Ling, if you like them, we'll give you two baskets when you leave. There's a forest in the tribe where these fruits grow."

Gua's father was also there, holding his grandson Sheng in his arms. He said, "Red berries are delicious, but they don't keep well. They spoil very quickly after being picked from the tree. If you leave them on the tree, they'll freeze if there's a heavy snowfall."

In the orc world, food is preserved by smoking or pickling meat, and fruits and vegetables are stored in a cool place. Persimmons are not easy to preserve, and even though the Great River Tribe has a large persimmon grove, they can only watch them spoil.

Bai Ling suddenly said, "I know a way to preserve persimmons. If you follow this method, the persimmons can be preserved until next spring."

All the beastmen there looked over, and Xue asked, "Persimmons?"

Bai Ling pointed to the red fruit in her hand: "In the world I dreamed about, the red fruit is called persimmon. They make persimmons into a very delicious food that they can eat until spring."

When Bai Ling mentioned this, the beastmen became interested. Yue asked from the side, "Ling, how do you make that delicious food?"

Bai Ling found a clean and sharp seashell and began peeling the persimmon.

The surrounding beastmen watched Bai Ling's actions, but no one spoke. They also wanted to know how to make persimmons into a convenient and easy-to-preserve delicious food.

Peeling seashells is not easy, and Bai Ling spent a lot of effort to peel all the persimmons: "Peel the persimmons, then put them on the ground to dry. Food made in this way is called dried persimmon. Dried persimmon is sweeter than persimmon. If stored properly, it will last until next spring."

One of the orcs asked, "But won't persimmons spoil after being peeled? Fruits and melons spoil very easily if their skin is chipped."

Bai Ling said, "They won't spoil. To dry persimmons, you need to choose firm persimmons; they can't be soft at all, because soft ones won't dry properly. After peeling the persimmons, put them in the sun to dry, being careful not to let them get wet in the rain. Turn them over once a day. Once the persimmons have softened, flatten them. After drying for a while longer, a layer of white frost-like substance will appear on the surface of the persimmons. At this point, the persimmons are ready to eat. However, to preserve them for longer, continue drying them until they are a bit firm. Don't throw away the peels; dry them with the persimmons. After the persimmons are dried, sprinkle a layer of peels on top of each other, and they will keep for a long time."

The orcs of the Great River Tribe were still skeptical, but Yue's great-uncle said, "I'll go pick the sweet fruit tomorrow. If it can really be made, we'll have sweet persimmon cakes to eat in winter."

The beastmen had no resistance to sweets, and the other beastmen dispelled their doubts and all said they wanted to go pick red berries.

Bai Ling actually wanted to make some persimmon jam, but unfortunately he didn't have any sugar on hand, so the jam he made probably wouldn't taste very good. Bai Ling decided to wait until he got the sugar before thinking about making the persimmon jam.

The entire Dahe tribe doesn't work together to dig cassava.

Each family in the tribe sends one orc to dig cassava for two days. The cassava dug during these two days belongs to the entire tribe. After two days, the orcs can go dig their own cassava.

After the first batch of cassava arrived, Bai Ling began to teach them how to process it. Bai Ling gave several instructions in a row: before digging up the cassava, you should taste it to see if it is sweet or bitter; when eating it, you must peel the cassava thoroughly; after cutting it, you must soak it for a day and a night; and when cooking it, you must cook it for a sufficient amount of time. If you do any of these things wrong, you may be poisoned.

The beastmen listened intently; this was a matter of life and death, so naturally they cared deeply.

Bai Ling explained to them how to store cassava and also mentioned several ways to eat it.

Xue said gratefully to Bai Ling, "Ling, thank you so much. With cassava, we won't go hungry this year."

Winter is a tough season, but this year, with the addition of large root grass, they can almost fill their stomachs.

In the afternoon, Bai Ling had nothing to do. Xue gave him a large basket of persimmons, and Bai Ling went to the area around the tribe to pick many leaves, intending to use them to dry persimmons. Bai Ling didn't know what this tree was called; its leaves were almost half the size of a cartwheel, thick and glossy green, perfect for drying persimmons.

Bai Ling ground a piece of seashell and sat in the shade of the house to start peeling persimmons.

He really loves dried persimmons. He finally found some persimmons and wanted to make a lot of dried persimmons to eat as a snack in the winter.

Before one basket of persimmons was finished being peeled, two more old orcs came over, each carrying a basket full of persimmons.

They came to deliver persimmons to Bai Ling.

Previously, Chief Li of the Great River Tribe and Bai Ling had agreed to exchange the method of boiling beast oil for multi-headed grass. In addition to boiling beast oil, Bai Ling also taught them how to make delicious stewed meat and melon cakes. The beastmen felt bad about it. Seeing that Bai Ling seemed to really like sweet fruit, they all went to the forest to pick it. These two beastmen were the first to bring over the sweet fruit.

After that, every now and then, orcs would bring Bai Ling a basket of persimmons. Bai Ling wanted to refuse, but it was their good intention, so he could only accept it.

By the time the sun was about to set, the persimmons in front of Bai Ling's house had piled up like a small mountain. He was even a little worried; how long would it take him to peel all these persimmons?

Otherwise, we might as well take all these persimmons back and ask the people in the tribe to help us peel them.

Bai Ling was lost in thought when Yue came over carrying a basket on her back.

He also brought persimmons to Bai Ling.

When Bai Ling saw that her beloved had arrived, she quickly stood up and said, "Yue, you're here. Please sit down."

Yue took the basket off her back and said, "Grandpa asked me to bring you some things."

Bai Ling's face showed a hint of bitterness: "Is it a persimmon?"

Yue smiled and said, "Yes, it's a red fruit."

Bai Ling expressed her concerns: "How am I going to carry all these persimmons back?"

This is indeed a problem. Yue didn't know what to say. If there weren't many red fruits, they could help Ling bring some back. But now that there are so many red fruits, Yue didn't know how to bring them back.

These people definitely can't do it; we need to ask others for help.

But right now the entire Great River Tribe is busy, and not many orcs can spare the time to help with this.
