Chapter 57 Glenn's Help, Rick Escapes Trouble
......Atlanta.
A few hundred meters away from the tank, Glenn cautiously peered out of a window of a building on the street.
He had gone out alone to scout ahead and was attracted by the sound of horses' hooves. Out of curiosity, he ran over to see what was happening and then witnessed Rick triggering a riot of zombies.
Terrified, he didn't even dare to say goodbye and ran back as fast as he could. Luckily, he was familiar with the city streets and turned into a secluded alley, thus avoiding being entangled by the zombies.
Glenn ran straight into a building, from where he could see the tank parked on the street and the restless zombies all over the place.
He leaned against the windowsill, looking at the pile of carcasses surrounding the horses that had been gnawing on the ground next to the tank. He swallowed hard, then picked up the walkie-talkie and called again:
"Hey, are you still alive?"
Inside the tank, Rick realized that this person who had suddenly appeared might be the key to his escape.
He quickly stood up, but accidentally bumped his head with a thud. Ignoring the pain, he picked up the answering machine and replied:
"Hello, hello..."
"Finally, they spoke up. I've been waiting for so long."
Glenn's complaining voice came through the radio.
"Where are you? Outside the tank? Can you see me now?"
Rick asked nervously.
If the other party is too far away, it's pointless. Although he didn't know the idiom "distant water can't quench a nearby fire," he understood the principle.
"Yes, I can. The bad news is: you're surrounded by walkers."
"What about the good news?"
"No."
"..."
Rick paused for a moment upon hearing this. So humorous, huh? He spoke seriously into the answering machine:
“Listen, whoever you are, I’m telling you, I’m really unhappy here.”
"Dude, you should really look at me from here, you'd be scared out of your wits."
"...Do you have any good suggestions for me?"
Rick could guess his situation without being told; now that he needed someone's help, he could only patiently continue asking.
"Yes, you have to escape."
Glenn spoke of it casually.
Rick felt like he was about to stab someone in the heart. He tried to calm himself down and then said:
"Is that all there is to escaping?"
"Don't look so incredulous. If you were looking from my angle, you'd see only one zombie still on top. The rest have all crawled under the tank and are enjoying their horse meat feast. Got it?"
Glenn finally revealed some valuable information, which greatly relieved Rick, who immediately replied:
"clear."
"There aren't that many zombies on the street on the other side of the tank. Run while they're not looking. You still have a chance. Do you have any ammo?"
"They're all in that pocket, including the gun. Can I get them back?"
Rick remembered his bag of weapons and quickly asked about it; he was reluctant to give it up like that.
"Forget about that bag, don't even think about it."
Glenn had also seen the bag of weapons, but the backpack was lying on the other side of the horde of zombies, so he dispelled the other's hopes and asked:
What weapons do you have on you?
"Wait a moment......"
Rick didn't hesitate after hearing this. He re-examined the pistol and counted the number of bullets.
He searched the soldiers' bodies again but found nothing useful. Suddenly, he noticed a hand grenade on a nearby cabinet.
Rick held the grenade in his hand, thinking to himself that he didn't know who the people outside were or whether he could trust them. He could keep this grenade as a trump card in case of emergency.
With that in mind, Rick put away the grenade and picked up the transponder again, saying:
“I found a Beretta pistol, a magazine, and 15 bullets.”
"Use it sparingly. Jump to the right side of the tank and keep running in that direction. After running about 50 yards, you'll see a small path where you can meet up."
Rick listened in silence, quickly weighing the pros and cons in his mind, large beads of sweat dripping down his face.
Regardless of whether what the other party said was true or false, he had to take the risk and try, otherwise even if he didn't die in the mouth of the zombies, he would suffocate in this tank.
"...What's your name?"
Rick asked into the answering machine, "Even if you're going to die, you should at least know who killed you."
"Are you listening? Time is of the essence."
Glenn was speechless upon hearing this.
[Is this person crazy? What time of day is it, and they're still worrying about this?]
Put aside all distractions for now and get to work.
Rick held a pistol in his right hand and an entrenching tool in his left. He half-squatted on the ground, took a few deep breaths to prepare himself, and then opened the hatch on top of the tank in one go.
"Ho..."
Sure enough, there was only one male zombie on the tank. When it saw Rick crawl out of the tank, it roared and pounced on him.
Rick turned around and shoveled it down, then, after determining the direction, he quickly got out of the tank, took a few steps, and jumped off onto the street.
Rick fell heavily to the ground with a thud, which aggravated his injuries, but he gritted his teeth and struggled to his feet, then ran toward the intersection where there were fewer walkers.
Bang... Bang... Bang...
Rick fired repeatedly, killing the zombies blocking his path.
One shot, one headshot; the zombies blocking the way fell one after another.
However, the gunshots quickly attracted more walkers, who relentlessly pursued Rick, and their numbers grew.
Bang... Bang... Bang...
Rick ran and fired as he went, and soon reached the intersection of the path the man had mentioned.
Suddenly, the metal gate at the intersection was pushed open, and a figure wearing a baseball cap ran out. Rick instinctively pointed his pistol at him.
"Hey, I'm alive!"
The person who arrived was Glenn, who had come to meet him. He was startled when suddenly a dark gun barrel was pointed at him, and he shouted anxiously.
Rick breathed a sigh of relief when he realized it was a young Asian man, not a hideous zombie.
But now is not the time to talk. The horde of zombies is closing in, and getting out of here is the top priority.
"Hurry, run!"
Glenn turned and ran first, not forgetting to turn back and urge Rick to hurry up.
"Here, hurry up."
Bang... Bang...
Rick quickly followed him into the alley, shooting the closest walker as he went.
After running about ten meters into the alley, there was an escape staircase installed on the exterior wall of a building.
boom......
At this point, Rick had also emptied his pistol.
Without a word, Glenn grabbed the ladder and started climbing. Seeing Rick still standing there dumbfounded below, he couldn't help but yell at him:
"What are you doing? Come up here."
Upon hearing Glenn's words, Rick quickly climbed up the ladder.
The horde of corpses rushed to the escape stairs almost simultaneously, countless hands raised and waving at them.
If Rick had been ten seconds slower, he would have been overwhelmed by the horde of zombies and torn to pieces.
Once they reached the second-floor platform, they were finally able to catch their breath, both of them leaning on the railing and panting heavily.
Looking down at the densely packed, menacing horde of corpses, and the ever-growing zombies converging on this side, one such thrilling experience is enough.
“That’s sharp, Eastwood.”
Seeing that it was temporarily safe, Glenn relaxed, and he looked at Rick in his police uniform and said jokingly:
"You new sheriff, are you riding here on horseback to clean up the area?"
"That's not what I'm after."
Rick could easily hear the sarcasm in his voice, but since the other person was his savior, he could only ignore it.
"Fine, whatever you want. You really are a fool."
Glenn said he had never seen such a reckless person, who dared to ride a horse wildly through the city. What was the difference between that and courting death?
"My name is Rick, thank you."
Rick skipped the topic, extended his right hand, introduced himself, and thanked the other person for their help.
"My name is Glenn, you're welcome."
Glenn reached out and shook his hand, then noticed the walkers below were starting to climb the stairs. He said in disbelief:
"Isn't it?"
This place is not safe to stay in. There is no other way out but to continue climbing up the escape ladder.
Looking at the staircase that stretched all the way to the roof without any safety measures, the two swallowed hard at the same time.
"The good news is, if they die, at least they died from a fall."
Glenn turned to Rick and said humorously.
"..."
Rick was speechless upon hearing this; this guy was really optimistic.
"I'm a pretty optimistic person."
Glenn seemed to have sensed Rick's thoughts.
After saying that, he turned around and took the lead in climbing the ladder.
Rick glanced at the horde of corpses below, frantically trying to climb the ladder, shook his head to clear his mind, and followed Glenn up the ladder.
Twenty minutes later, they reached the rooftop of another building via the stairs.
I saw only a few scattered zombies in the alley downstairs, because a bus was blocking the entrance to the alley, preventing the large number of zombies outside from entering the street.
"Did you set up roadblocks in the alley?"
Rick looked down and asked with some curiosity.
"It was set up by someone else, probably before the walkers took over this place."
Glenn shook his head; this was how it was before they arrived. He continued running, saying:
"The people who set up the roadblocks certainly didn't expect there to be so many zombies."
The two arrived at the courtyard and were about to go downstairs through it.
Rick looked at the young Asian man in front of him and finally couldn't help but ask him:
Why did you risk your life to save me when I was inside the tank?
"Let's cling to a naive and foolish hope."
Glenn simply lifted the cover of the courtyard and crawled into it, answering as he did so:
"If I were in there, I would also hope someone would come to rescue me. Maybe I would be even more of an idiot than you."
Rick fell silent upon hearing this, unsure of what to say.
......
bang...
Glenn pushed open the iron gate and was the first to walk out of the building. He then ran down the stairs, pulling out his walkie-talkie and calling out:
"I'm back, bringing one person and four walkers with me."
Rick overheard Glenn's conversation on the walkie-talkie as he ran ahead, and realized that Glenn had companions here, but he didn't know who they were.
[Are they people from the shelter, or do they know where the shelter is?]
Rick followed Glenn, full of questions, intending to ask him properly once they were safe.
