Chapter 55 Atlanta, the Horde of Dead

...outside Atlanta.

Rick rode his horse all the way here, and after an unknown amount of time, he finally saw the skyscrapers of Atlanta.

However, the scene before him gradually dampened his initial anticipation.

On the highway, the outbound direction was jammed with all sorts of abandoned cars, a complete blockage that stretched as far as the eye could see, while the inbound direction was completely empty.

He seemed to see the scene of people scrambling to flee the city when the disaster struck.

Nowadays, apart from the birds flying overhead, the entire city is lifeless and desolate, a scene of utter ruin and decay.

Are there really shelters in the city?

Rick, riding on horseback, gazed at the city before him in silence for a long time.

Finally, filled with questions, he spurred his horse toward the lifeless city.

Rick was unaware that shortly after he entered the city, a black sedan finally arrived and stopped where he had just been standing.

......

In the car, looking at the sight of Atlanta, Lee Allen and Susan had the same question as Rick.

"Is there really a shelter here? It looks like a dead city."

In the driver's seat, Susan couldn't help but voice her doubts.

"do not know."

Li Ailun's answer was very straightforward.

They only came to check it out because they saw that message; their main purpose was the CDC.

"So...do we still need to go into the city?"

Susan turned to him and asked, waiting for him to make a decision.

Upon hearing this, Li Ailun fell silent for a moment, hesitating about whether to enter the city.

If shelters exist, it means the US government is still maintaining operations, and such an important place as the CDC must still be functioning. They might be able to get some help from the shelters.

Conversely, cities with large populations are like dragon's dens and tiger's lair; venturing in rashly might just be suicide.

Should we go straight to the CDC?

Just as Li Ailun was still undecided, his deep eyes suddenly narrowed slightly, and he let out a surprised sound.

"Huh......"

In the distance, a helicopter was seen flying towards Atlanta. Although it was far away, Li Ailun could immediately recognize the model of the aircraft from its outline.

This is the main type of aircraft used by the U.S. Navy for performing logistical support missions such as search and rescue, and transportation.

Seeing this, Susan turned her head in the direction of his gaze and also saw the huge machine flying over Atlanta. She murmured in disbelief:

"That is......"

"HH-60G Pave Hawk Rescue Helicopter".

Is it a shelter?

"I don't know. Let's go into the city, which way should we drive?"

The black sedan started moving again and sped off into downtown Atlanta.

......

The vast city of Atlanta seemed to be a ghost town, with the streets unusually quiet.

Apart from the garbage scattered everywhere, there was no one in sight, not even a trace of zombies.

Tap tap... Tap tap...

Rick rode his horse for an unknown amount of time, the sound of hooves echoing through the quiet streets.

He was completely disoriented and had no idea where the so-called refuge was.

The further in you go, the more cars of all kinds are burned on the road.

Everywhere there were fortifications built with sandbags, various abandoned weapons and equipment, destroyed military vehicles, tanks, and even helicopters.

There are indeed signs that the area was once a military base, and that it experienced a very fierce battle, but it was clearly lost in the end.

Rick rode his horse toward the city center before he began to see scattered walkers.

The zombies that had been lying in wait in various corners began to awaken.

Attracted by the clatter of hooves, they dragged their stiff bodies and slowly followed behind Rick.

"Stay calm, it's just a few. We have Invincible Horse Legs."

Sensing that his horse was a little startled, Rick quickly patted its neck to reassure it.

He glanced back at the sluggish zombies behind him, then pulled on the reins, turned the horse around, and continued onward...

After passing through two blocks, the fortifications became more numerous, and the signs of battle appeared even more severe.

He saw crows feeding on the bodies of soldiers lying on the tanks, and Rick felt a pang of sadness; this was not a good sign.

Just as Rick was wondering where to go, he suddenly heard the sound of a helicopter rotor in the sky.

Thump thump thump... Thump thump thump...

He quickly looked up and around, but the tall buildings blocked his view, and he couldn't see any helicopters at all.

Finally, Rick saw the reflection of the airplane on the glass of a building.

He became excited and realized that the helicopter was very likely from the refuge he was looking for.

"drive......"

Without a second thought, Rick kicked his horse's belly and sped off in that direction.

He rode forward at full gallop, keeping an eye on the plane's movements, completely unaware of the situation at the intersection ahead.

Just as it reached the intersection, the horse was startled and stopped, then reared up on its hind legs.

The entire street was filled with zombies, a dense mass of human heads. Moreover, all the zombies were startled by the movement of the horses and turned their heads to look in this direction.

Staring intently at him by hundreds of bloodthirsty eyes, Rick felt a chill run down his spine and his hair stand on end.

This was the first time he had seen such a large horde of corpses since he woke up.

"Ho...ho..."

After the zombies realized what was happening, they began to roar and pounce on the young man in front of them.

Rick was so frightened that he immediately turned his horse around and went back the way he came. He didn't care about helicopters anymore; his priority was to escape.

The walkers behind him also went berserk, chasing Rick like a tidal wave.

Before Rick could ride his horse to the next intersection, he saw a large horde of corpses emerging from the intersection ahead, completely blocking his way.

"Crab Special..."

Rick couldn't help but curse. He turned his horse around again, trying to run in a different direction, but by then the zombies on the street had completely surrounded him.

The horse beneath him was so frightened that he couldn't control it at all, and within just a few seconds, the walking corpses around him had pounced on him.

"Ho...ho..."

Rick felt countless hands tugging at his legs, and then the tall chestnut horse was pinned to the ground by the walkers, its pitiful cries echoing across the ground.

Rick also fell off the saddle and landed directly on the ground.

Fortunately, because the horses were relatively large targets, most of the zombies pounced on them and began to devour the horse meat. They quickly gutted the horses, and the horde of zombies made constant chewing and swallowing sounds.

This gave Rick a chance to catch his breath. He kicked away the zombie that lunged at him, then rolled over and crawled in another direction using both hands and feet.

But when he looked up, he saw countless zombies surrounding him, baring their teeth and brandishing their claws, as if there was no way to escape.
