Chapter 53 Farm
……
On Interstate 85, Rick reluctantly turned off the car and parked the police car in the middle of the road.
The car's fuel gauge went red half an hour ago, but it couldn't get any supplies along the way, and now it's completely broken down.
Rikera lowered the sun visor, and there was a photo clipped to it; it was of the family of three.
He stared blankly at the photo of his family, all smiling happily.
[Lori, Carl, I will find you!]
After reaffirming his conviction once again, he reached out, took the photo down, and put it in his breast pocket.
Then he opened the car door, picked up his luggage bag, and got out of the police car.
Rick went around to the back of the car, opened the trunk, and took out the backpack full of guns and ammunition and an empty gasoline can.
bang...
He closed the trunk lid, patted the car body with mixed feelings, as if saying goodbye to his old friend who had been with him for many years.
Taking a deep breath, Rick slung the heavy weapons pack over his shoulder, carried a bag in one hand and a gasoline can in the other, and began his trek along the road.
...more than half an hour later.
Rick finally came across a small farm, where a white house could be seen in the middle of the farm from afar.
He walked into the farm and saw that it was somewhat abandoned because no one had taken care of it for a long time.
An old-fashioned car was parked quietly under a big tree in front of the house. The rusty metal on the car body showed that it had been exposed to the elements for a long time.
All the clues at hand suggest that there is most likely no one on this farm.
At least, there were no living people.
But Rick didn't give up on leaving; he went straight to the white house.
"anyone there?"
Rick stopped in front of the house and shouted loudly into it.
The house was quiet, and no one responded.
"...I'm a police officer!"
Rick unloaded his heavy backpack onto the ground and continued shouting into the house:
"Could I borrow some gasoline?"
Rick spoke as he walked toward the house.
"anyone there?"
Rick took off his police hat as a sign of respect for his owner.
He walked to the door and looked inside through the glass window in the wooden door. The house was empty; there wasn't a soul in sight.
He still reached out and knocked on the door, asking loudly:
"Is anyone home?"
No one answered.
Rick was still not giving up, so he went around to the bedroom window and looked inside. As soon as he got close, he smelled the stench of rotting corpses coming from inside.
He peered through the glass window and saw a large male corpse lying on the sofa in the bedroom. The room reeked of a foul stench, and flies swarmed around it.
There was a shotgun next to the body, and a large bloodstain was on the wall behind the sofa. Judging from the angle of the bloodstains, the owner of the house must have committed suicide by shooting himself.
The scene before him made Rick feel a little down. Instead of forcing his way into the house, he turned and walked away.
Because he didn't want to disturb the deceased any further, he wanted to give the owner of this place a final bit of respect.
Rick walked to the big tree in a gloomy mood and sat down on the stone bench to rest.
He scratched his head in distress, trying to process his negative emotions while thinking about how to get to Atlanta.
Looking up, Rick saw the old-fashioned car parked under the big tree. Composing himself, he got up and walked towards the car.
The car door wasn't locked, so he opened it, but couldn't find the key inside. He searched around inside but found nothing useful.
Rick closed the car door dejectedly, just as he was about to leave with his luggage and weapons.
*chuckle*
A sudden snoring sound from a horse caught his attention.
He turned his head and saw a Cleveland chestnut horse standing in the stable in the backyard, staring at him.
Perhaps because it hadn't seen a living person in a long time, this horse was quite curious about the creature that suddenly appeared in front of it.
Rick looked at the horse in front of him and felt a surge of emotion.
If he hadn't been unfamiliar with Chinese idioms, he would have at least shouted: "There's always a way out."
Soon after, Rick transformed into a cowboy, rode his horse away from the farm, and headed towards Atlanta.
"Let's take it slow, okay? I haven't ridden a horse in years."
Rick sensed that the horse beneath him was becoming restless, and he kept trying to calm it down.
But perhaps because it had been cooped up in the stable for too long, the horse suddenly let out an excited neigh and then galloped off forward.
The horse suddenly accelerated, and Rick nearly lost his balance and fell off the saddle. He could only grip the horse's belly tightly with his legs, shouting anxiously:
"Don't rush, take your time, don't rush, slow down..."
And so, the figures of the man and his horse gradually disappeared into the distance across the wilderness...
......
Shortly after Rick left the farm, a black sedan pulled up on Interstate 85.
It was Li Ailun and Susan who were heading towards the CDC.
The black car quickly passed the police car parked on the road.
As they passed the police car, Li Ailun, who was sitting in the passenger seat, glanced out the window but didn't pay much attention since there was no one in the car.
This situation is so common; there are all sorts of cars stalled on the road.
Their own situation is equally worrying.
The car's fuel light was still on, and if they couldn't find any more gas, they would have to abandon the car and walk.
The black sedan quickly left the police car far behind.
They continued driving on the highway and sped away without stopping for a moment.
……
"Hey, there's a farm over there."
Suddenly, Susan, who was focused on driving, spoke, pointing with one hand towards the roadside ahead.
"Let's go see if we can borrow some gasoline."
Li Ailun snapped out of his reverie and looked in the direction she was pointing.
Sure enough, he saw the farm and nodded in agreement.
A moment later, the black sedan slowly drove into the farm and finally stopped in front of the white house.
Beep beep...
Susan honked the horn twice, and then they waited in the car for a while to make sure no zombies were coming from nearby before opening the car door and getting out.
A gentle breeze was blowing, but the farm was unusually quiet; apart from the cicadas chirping in the trees, there was no other sound.
"I'll go take a look."
Susan turned to look at Li Ailun and said to him:
"Hmm... Be careful."
Li Ailun simply nodded and responded casually.
Susan is now perfectly capable of handling things on her own, so he wasn't too worried and turned to walk towards the old-fashioned car.
Susan walked slowly toward the door of the house.
The house is surrounded by many flowers and plants, and a cluster of purple flowers blooms in a corner, making the white wooden house look very charming.
Susan couldn't identify what kind of flower it was, but she thought it was quite pretty.
This also shows that the owner of this place must be a person who loves life.
However, her hand was on the holster at her waist, clearly indicating that she had not let her guard down.
