Chapter 50 Parting, Resolving Heartache
...Outside the police station building.
"Conserve ammunition. Ammunition runs out faster than you think, especially during target practice."
Rick walked out the back door, giving instructions to the two men following behind, and then carried weapons and supplies to his vehicle.
“Dwayne…”
Morgan called out to his son and handed him a bag of supplies.
"What's up?"
Dwayne reached out and took the bag, asking a question.
"Take this to the car."
Morgan said that he walked over to Rick's car.
"Are you really not coming with me?"
Rick looked at Morgan and couldn't help but ask again.
If there were shelters in Atlanta, it would certainly be safer for them than for them to wander outside alone.
"Let's talk about it in a few days. Once Dwayne has learned how to fire a gun, I'll be in better spirits too..."
Morgan scratched his head and finally revealed his plan.
Upon hearing this, Rick turned around, opened the car door, and took out a walkie-talkie from the car. It belonged to his good friend and partner, Sean.
As he adjusted the walkie-talkie, Sean came to mind.
[Sean...I wish him good luck.]
Rick thought this to himself, then put the thought aside for the moment and handed the walkie-talkie to Morgan:
"You should bring one too."
Morgan did not refuse; he smiled and took the walkie-talkie.
“Every day at dawn, I have a meeting that lasts a few minutes. When you get there, contact me through this.”
Rick and Morgan agreed on a fixed time to talk, as the walkie-talkie battery was low.
Do you think they're there too?
Morgan thought Rick was being a bit too cautious, but having a way to stay in touch was a good thing.
"Just in case, it's never too much to be careful."
Rick said that.
“Listen, remember this: they usually don’t come alone. Instead, they swarm in like hungry tigers.”
Morgan reiterated to Rick:
"Brother, please be very careful."
"You too."
Rick and Morgan met eyes, then reached out and clasped hands tightly.
"Rick, you're such a good person. I hope your family can be reunited."
Morgan looked into Rick's eyes and said with a touch of emotion.
Rick fell silent upon hearing this; he hoped so too.
"Until we meet again, Dwayne."
Rick turned to look at Dwayne, bent down and shook hands with him, then said earnestly:
"Take good care of your dad."
After spending more than a day together, he had already noticed that Morgan's condition was actually a little off because of his wife.
Although, it's not obvious yet.
Dwayne didn't understand the meaning behind Rick's words, but being entrusted with such a solemn task made him feel respected and taken seriously.
He gripped Rick's hand tightly, a happy smile on his face, and agreed:
"Yes, sir."
Just then, Morgan saw a zombie walking towards him from the other side of the iron gate. He suppressed his smile and drew his pistol, becoming alert.
"Ho...ho..."
It was a zombie dressed in a police uniform, staggering towards them.
Because it was blocked by the iron mesh gate, it could only lie on the gate and howl at the group of people.
"...Leon Bessie?"
Rick squinted, scrutinizing the approaching walker. He barely recognized it by its somewhat distorted face, and explained to the two of them:
“He gave me a bad impression; he was careless and stupid, but I couldn’t just let it go.”
"You knew they would hear the gunshots, right...?"
Morgan offered a reminder.
"Let's get out of here before they show up."
After Rick finished speaking, he took a pistol from its holster and walked towards the iron gate.
"Let's go, son, hurry..."
Seeing that Rick was determined, Morgan told his son to get in the car first.
"Heh...heh..."
Rick looked at his former colleague, now a zombie, through the iron mesh door. He raised his revolver, pressed it against the zombie's forehead, and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
Today, he finally realized the thought he had had many times before about shooting his stupid brain.
bang...
A loud gunshot rang out, and "Leon Bessie" was shot in the head, half of his skull blown off. Blackish-red, foul-smelling blood splattered like beads, and then his limp body slowly collapsed, his hands clinging to the wire mesh slowly slipping away...
A short while later, two cars drove out of the police station parking lot, one after the other, and parted ways at the intersection.
As each car turned, they all honked their horns twice in unison, as if saying goodbye.
Morgan drove back the way he came, intending to put an end to the past.
Rick, however, had something he had been thinking about for a long time and had to do before he left.
After this separation, they reunited many years later, but everything had changed...
......
Morgan returned to the house where they had been staying. He first nailed the door shut, then looked outside through the equally sealed windows, and said to his son:
"You stay here and read some comics, I'm going upstairs."
After saying that, he carried a red suitcase and a sniper rifle up to the second floor.
Dwayne understood what his father was going to do. He remained silent, instead flipping through his comic book, trying to distract himself.
Upstairs, Morgan flipped through photos of his family. Looking at his wife's smiling face in the photos, he recalled the little things he had shared with her, and his heart was filled with emotion.
Finally, Morgan chose his wife's favorite photo, pasted it on the window frame, moved a chair over to the window, and set up his sniper rifle.
He first whistled to attract the attention of the zombies wandering the street.
"......dad."
Upon hearing the whistle, Dwayne lost all interest in reading his comic book. He got up, ran to the top of the stairs, and nervously shouted upstairs.
“It’s okay, Dwayne.”
Morgan heard his son's voice and turned to answer.
"Son, stay down here and don't come up."
He didn't want his son to see what was about to happen.
Dwayne sat back on the mattress, covering his ears tightly with his hands.
bang...
Morgan scanned the zombies on the street through his scope, but did not find the figure he was looking for.
He fired a shot decisively, killing one of the zombies on the spot. The gunshot attracted more zombies.
Come here, baby.
Morgan muttered nervously, knowing his wife was nearby.
Finally, he saw his wife's figure in the scope's field of view. She was still wearing her pajamas and wandering the streets, like a restless ghost that could never find peace.
Morgan took a deep breath and aimed at his wife's forehead, but seeing her blank expression and lifeless eyes through the scope, he hesitated to pull the trigger.
This is the person he loves most!
His son's mother!
Countless memories flooded my mind...
In the end, he could only watch helplessly as his wife's figure disappeared from the scope's view.
Morgan ultimately couldn't bring himself to fire the gun; he buried his face in his arms and sobbed uncontrollably.
I don't know if it's because of my wife's misfortune or my own cowardice.
At that moment, he was unaware that his momentary indecisiveness would soon completely destroy the last hope in his life.
If he were given another chance to choose, he would definitely pull the trigger at this moment.
All this suffering should have been borne by myself alone.
......
Meanwhile, Rick drove his police car to a grassy area.
He parked the police car on the side of the road, then took a police hat, opened the car door, and got out.
Rick walked onto the grass, but did not see the target he was looking for.
The grass was completely empty; there was nothing to be seen at a glance.
He put his police hat on his head and then began searching the neighborhood.
Finally, two or three hundred meters away, Rick found his destination.
"Ho...ho..."
A female zombie with only half a body crawls forward with difficulty on the grass.
In just one day, this walking corpse crawled this far using only its hands.
This gave him a new understanding of the walking corpses' mobility.
Rick walked straight to the walker, slowly crouched down, and looked at the first living walker he had ever seen, his eyes filled with pity for this strange woman.
"Ho...ho..."
The female zombie also noticed the living person beside her. She looked up at Rick, but was too weak to even reach out her hand. She could only open and close her mouth and let out a low growl at him.
"It's such a shame you've become like this..."
Rick said with pity, as he pulled a revolver from its holster and pointed it at the head of the female zombie in front of him.
boom......
After a brief internal struggle, Rick decisively pulled the trigger, finally freeing it completely.
Having put his mind at ease, Rick stood up from the grass.
He took one last look at the lifeless corpse on the ground, then turned and left without lingering.
He got back into the police car and drove towards Atlanta.
