Chinese agents survive in a zombie apocalypse.
Chapter 48 News from the Shelter
After dinner, the three of them rested in the living room so they could look after each other.
The Morgans simply moved their mattress out and set up a makeshift bed on the living room floor.
Rick used sofa cushions to make do on the floor, leaning against the sofa as he quietly pondered his thoughts.
"Karl...is he your son?"
Morgan suddenly broke the silence and asked.
“William, he mentioned that name today.”
"He's still young, even younger than your son."
Rick was thinking about his wife and children when he heard the question, so he answered.
"Is he with his mother?"
"...I hope so."
Rick said that he could only feel better by forcing himself to think positively.
"dad......"
Dwayne, who was lying on his pillow and dozing off, suddenly spoke.
"Ok?"
Morgan reached out and touched his son's head, looking at him with affection.
"Have you asked him?"
"Ah... your gunshot wound."
Morgan smiled and told Rick about her son's problem:
“I made a small bet with my son, and he said you’re a bank robber.”
"You guessed right, just like Deacon Karp."
Rick smiled wryly, deliberately saying this at first, and only after shifting to a more comfortable position did he explain to them:
"Actually, I'm a county police officer."
Morgan nodded respectfully upon hearing this.
Just then, the car alarm suddenly went off outside the house.
Dwayne was startled by the sudden noise and sat up.
"It's alright, Dad's here, nothing's wrong."
Morgan quickly calmed his son down, then turned to Rick, who was also becoming tense, and said:
"One of them must have hit the car."
Are you sure?
Rick wasn't quite sure and got up to check.
“This has happened before, and it caused quite a stir.”
Although Morgan said this, he still got up from the mattress, still feeling uneasy, and instructed his son:
"Turn off the lights, Dwayne."
The three of them turned off all the lights, plunging the room into complete darkness.
Morgan walked to the closed window, peeked through a crack, and then said to Rick:
"That blue one, over there on the street, just like last time."
Rick peered closer and saw what was happening on the street through the gap he had made.
All that could be seen on the streets under the cover of night were shadowy figures of many zombies wandering around. A car parked on the side of the road had its alarm triggered, and its headlights were flashing incessantly, attracting all the zombies nearby.
"Won't that noise attract them all?"
Rick watched with trepidation and asked worriedly.
There's nothing we can do now; we can only wait until they all disperse tomorrow.
Morgan shared the same concerns, but felt helpless about the situation.
Dwayne also came over at this moment. He suddenly saw a familiar figure and became somewhat excited.
It was a Black woman in a conservative nightgown, wandering aimlessly through the streets like other zombies, but he recognized her immediately—it was his mother.
Where is she?
"Don't look, stay away from the window."
Morgan didn't want her son to see his mother like this.
Seeing that he was still reluctant to leave, gazing longingly at the figure, she urged him sternly:
"I told you to leave quickly, hurry up."
Dwayne reluctantly left through the window, then collapsed onto the mattress and began to sob.
"Okay, be quiet."
Morgan returned to the mattress, hugging his son to comfort him, afraid that the crying would attract the attention of the walkers outside.
"Shh..."
By the window, Rick continued to observe the walkers outside, as everything had overturned his understanding of the world.
He saw the figure lingering around the house from the window, so he went to the door and looked through the peephole.
Through the peephole, he saw that the figure seemed to sense something and walked straight toward the house where they were, then climbed the steps and stopped in front of the door.
Rick stared at the other person through the peephole of the wooden door, thankfully unable to see inside from the outside.
It seems to have retained some of its habits from when it was alive.
To Rick's horror, the doorknob on the door began to turn slightly...
......
Rick slowly retreated to the living room and sat down, his eyes fixed on the door. Although he knew the door was nailed shut and couldn't be opened, he couldn't help feeling nervous.
"She...she died in another room, right in bed."
Morgan held her son and comforted him, trying to calm herself down, and began to tell Rick what had happened:
"There's nothing I can do, that burning... her skin is as hot as a furnace..."
"I should have taken her down a long time ago, but... I just couldn't bring myself to do it..."
Morgan looked at Rick with a sorrowful expression, expressing his inner turmoil.
"She is my son's mother."
Rick was speechless. Although he felt sympathy for Morgan's plight, he hadn't yet reached the point of truly empathizing with him.
He turned his head and looked at the door again, seeing the doorknob still turning. Suddenly, he was reminded of his wife, Lori, and his mood became depressed.
What would he do if Lori was outside the door?
He didn't know...
......
...the next day.
The zombies outside the street had indeed dispersed, leaving only one lone zombie leaning against the fence in front of the door.
Morgan and his son led Rick out of the house, and he taught Rick how to deal with the walkers.
The first point is that you cannot treat them as human beings, and you must never be soft-hearted or lenient.
The second point is that you must get a headshot; that's their only weakness.
Thirdly, try to use melee weapons as much as possible. Although firearms are more effective, the sound of gunfire will attract more zombies.
Are you sure? They're dead?
Rick was still a little uneasy, so he checked with Morgan again and again.
"They're all dead."
Morgan nodded patiently, emphasizing that Rick's caution proved he was a good person.
“Besides having something in his head, that’s why we have to shoot him in the head.”
Rick, wearing a mask and carrying a baseball bat, walked ahead and slowly approached the walker.
"Ho...ho..."
The zombie immediately smelled the scent of living people, got up from the ground, and walked towards them.
The zombie in front of me looked young, but its face was contorted with rage, as if it wanted to devour someone. It certainly didn't look like a living person at all.
Rick didn't hesitate any longer. He grabbed his baseball bat and rushed forward, swinging it at the walker's head. With a few thuds, he knocked the walker to the ground, splattering his white clothes with foul-smelling black blood.
This was the first time he had killed a zombie. Because it aggravated his injuries, he knelt on the ground, gasping for breath, and couldn't get up for a long time...
......
Rick took Morgan and his son back to his home.
"They're still alive..."
Rick tossed the mask aside and said with absolute certainty:
"My wife and son, at least, were still alive when they passed away."
"How did you know? Look at this place..."
Morgan asked, puzzled, looking at the mess in the room, which had clearly been ransacked.
In the aftermath of the disaster, with order collapsing, he witnessed far too many unspeakable tragedies.
"There were empty drawers in the bedroom. They brought clothes, not many, but enough for the journey."
Rick, however, was very confident about this, a conclusion he reached after careful and calm analysis.
"Perhaps someone broke in and stole it?"
Morgan said there might be worse possibilities he didn't say aloud.
"See those picture frames on the wall? I've never seen a thief want them."
Rick pointed to the spot on the wall where the nails were left, where their family photo should have been hanging.
He then opened the cabinet by the wall, and sure enough, the family photo album that should have been inside was also gone.
"My photo album, my family photos, are all gone."
All these clues confirmed Rick's conclusion that Lori and the others had left safely, which rekindled Rick's hope.
He vowed in his heart that he would find Lori and Carl.
"Photo album...hehehe..."
Morgan suddenly laughed, pulled out a chair in front of him, and sat down. Seeing Rick looking at him with a puzzled expression, he explained:
“My wife is the same way… I was packing my survival gear, but she was taking out a photo album.”
"I reckon they'll be in Atlanta..."
At that moment, Dwayne, who was standing at the door, suddenly spoke.
"Correct."
Morgan, reminded by his son, also remembered this matter and nodded in agreement.
Why that?
Upon hearing this, Rick immediately pressed for more details.
"The shelter is huge... at least that's what they said until the broadcast stopped."
Morgan told him about the Atlanta safety zone:
“The military provides protection, food, and lodging. They send people there, saying it’s the safest place.”
"Plus, they also have access to medical care."
Dwayne added.
Seeing Rick's questioning look, Morgan continued:
"The CDC said they are trying to find a solution."
Rick felt much relieved upon hearing this.
This was good news for him, as it at least gave him a direction to search for.
He took a bunch of keys from the cabinet; these were spare keys for the police station.
Since we're heading to Atlanta, how can we go without weapons?
"Come on, I'll take you to a nice place."
