Chinese agents survive in a zombie apocalypse.

Chapter 4 Bad News and Airport Pickup

...outside the school.

After mentally preparing himself, Sean opened the door and got out of the police car.

Lori, who was walking towards the police car, stopped in her tracks. Her good mood vanished as she saw that it wasn't Rick who got out of the police car, but her husband's partner, Sean.

Lori stood frozen in place, watching Sean walk towards her with a serious expression, a bad feeling creeping into her heart.

"He's still alive, isn't he..."

Lori stared intently into Sean's eyes as he approached, her voice trembling slightly.

She was afraid that the next moment she would hear the information she had been terrified of hearing for the past ten years.

"The surgery is in progress."

Sean said with a heavy heart.

Just then, the school bell rang, jolting Lori awake from her daze.

"what happened?"

Lori tried to ask calmly, though her eyes were still somewhat unfocused.

"The bus told us there were two suspects in the car, but there was actually one more person."

Someone messed things up, and I messed things up too. I didn't see that person in time, Lori, it's all my fault.

Sean felt incredibly guilty. If only he had noticed sooner that there was someone else in the car, if only he had seen that person raise a gun at Rick sooner…

"No, I don't believe it."

Lori suddenly shook her head. This scene had appeared in her nightmares many times before, but now that reality was in front of her, she wished she was having a nightmare.

Sean remained silent, wanting to say something comforting but unable to utter a word.

……

Hearing the commotion behind her, as students left school, she realized she had to be strong and face the truth.

Lori took two steps to Sean's side, turned around to look at little Carl who was walking towards her and knew nothing about what was happening, and forced a smile to wave and greet her son.

Sean forced a smile and greeted the cheerful-looking Carl, but the smile only lasted a few seconds.

What should I say to him?

Lori clutched her chest, trying to calm herself, and asked helplessly.

As the wife of an American police officer, she had actually prepared herself for this day long ago. A large part of the conflict between her and Rick stemmed from Rick's work as a police officer.

But Rick is too upright and often acts recklessly, which makes her feel that he doesn't care about her and her child.

How can I tell my son that his father was shot?

As a mother, she wasn't ready to tell her son so suddenly that he might lose his father; Carl was still so young.

"You don't need to talk to him alone."

Sean said he planned to go together.

Lori suddenly stopped Sean, nodded to him, and thanked him.

But this is a family matter for the Grimes, and they should handle it themselves.

"Ok."

Sean understood the meaning in Lori's eyes and didn't insist any further.

Lori took a deep breath, quickly composed herself, and ran a few steps towards Karl as he approached.

Lori took Karl's hands, then knelt on the hard ground so that she could look him in the eye. She looked at Karl and said:

"Karl, Mom has some news to tell you, but you must learn to be strong and brave like your father. Promise Mom you can do it, okay?"

Little Carl nodded. In his heart, his father was a hero, the bravest person, and he wanted to become a righteous policeman like his father in the future.

"Karl, listen to me, your father was accidentally shot while on a mission today, and now..."

Lori tried hard to find the right words, but any embellishment would fall flat when she said the bad news.

"Is Daddy dead?"

Little Karl instantly extracted the key information, his face changed, and he tried hard not to cry, but tears still flowed down his cheeks instantly.

Because his father said he was a man now, and men shouldn't cry.

But Dad said that a man who doesn't cry out loud isn't really crying.

"No, no, no, Dad isn't dead. He's still in surgery, so we must be strong and pray for him together. Dad needs your help right now. Can you do that?"

Lori felt a pang of sadness seeing her son's sensible expression. She gently reached out and stroked his face, wiping away the tears streaming down his cheeks.

Little Carl nodded, holding back his tears, indicating that he would be strong and would pray for his father.

Lori hugged her son tightly, and the two of them prayed for Rick together on the way.

"God, please make sure Rick is alright."

From a distance, Sean watched the mother and child embracing each other. He felt a pang of sadness, but thought that if he were the one who had been shot, perhaps no one would pray for him.

......

Washington.

As night fell, a passenger plane that had traveled a long distance from China finally arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport.

Outside the station exit, a Chinese man in a sharp suit was smoking and waiting by the roadside. He was around thirty years old, handsome, and had a military bearing.

His name is Lee Allen. On the surface, he is a new immigrant to the United States from Singapore. He served in the military in Singapore and is now a security officer specially appointed by the United Nations.

But his true identity is actually a top-level secret agent from China. His Singaporean identity and experience are fabricated. He is a 100% native-born Chinese.

He had been working undercover in New York for nearly three years as a UN security officer, and this time he was finally put to use.

A mysterious virus broke out in many parts of the world. Later, a researcher from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed online that three months before the mysterious virus was first reported in the news, the CDC suddenly launched a secret research project codenamed "Project Wildfire," which was closely related to the mysterious virus.

This revelation caused a huge international media storm, and coincidentally, the first case reported in the news came from Atlanta, the location of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The researcher then provided a considerable amount of information and evidence online, proving that the so-called "Wildfire Project" had indeed been conducting research on the mysterious virus for a long time.

Although the exposed information was quickly ordered to be deleted by the US government and prohibited from being disseminated online on the grounds of national security.

Despite repeated claims by the US government that the "Wildfire Project" was not the source of the mysterious virus, but merely a normal research and tracing project initiated after its discovery, the origin of the mysterious virus remains unclear.

A week later, the researcher who exposed "Project Wildfire" died at home after being shot eight times.

Under international pressure, the US government had no choice but to agree to allow a review team from the World Health Organization to conduct an investigation at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

A week earlier, Li Ailun had received secret instructions from his superiors to become a security officer accompanying the WHO review team in this national operation. His mission was to obtain all the true information about the mysterious virus and to secretly protect the personal safety of Chinese experts.

It is well known that those engaged in auditing in the United States are at high risk of accidents, and the personnel sent by various countries are all top talents in their respective fields, and they cannot be easily lost in some inexplicable accident.

Today, Li Ailun is here at the airport to pick up the experts from China.

……

Just as Li Ailun was smoking, a strikingly elegant Chinese woman finally appeared at the exit.

She was wearing a long white dress, her figure was graceful, like a ripe peach, she had the air of a wife, and she looked very radiant.

The woman had delicate and beautiful features. Although she wore no makeup, she was naturally beautiful, more beautiful than any flower.

A pair of large black-rimmed glasses added a touch of artistic flair to her already sophisticated, wifely demeanor.

Like a camellia flower covered in morning dew, pure white and unblemished, fresh and moist, charming but not seductive.

At this moment, the woman with glasses, pulling her suitcase, looked around in front of the exit of the passage. Her beautiful eyes swept over the people waiting on the roadside, as if she was looking for someone.

Li Ailun immediately recognized the Chinese woman as his target, as he had already obtained her identity information and photo.

Susan, female, 32 years old, married, became the youngest academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at the age of 29, a doctoral supervisor at a top university, and most importantly, a leading expert in the field of virology. She has received numerous honors in China and internationally and is a truly beautiful and talented scientist. She is one of the experts invited by the WHO.
