Chapter 20 Outsiders want to get in, insiders want to get out

……

"Thank you, thank you so much for letting us on the bus. My name is T-boy, and this is Glenn."

The two got into the back seat of the car, and T kept thanking the female driver.

"What's that smell...cough cough..."

The female driver was choked by the strange smell on T-boy's body.

"Sorry... I made your car dirty. I'll wash it for you when it's safe."

T-boy also said apologetically.

"never mind......"

The female driver didn't know what else to say. As she started the car and drove away, she introduced herself and then apologized to Glenn:

"My name is Jacques. I'm sorry, I almost bumped into you."

"Uh...no, it's nothing."

Glenn was pale. That moment had been truly terrifying; he felt as if his soul had almost left his body, and he hadn't recovered yet.

"I heard gunfire in that direction. Is the military clearing out the city...?"

Jacques asked if she had driven out because she heard the commotion and wanted to seek refuge with the military.

"That includes people like us..."

T-boy continued her words.

"......What?"

Jacques glanced at the rearview mirror, puzzled, not quite understanding what T-boy meant.

"We saw soldiers firing at civilians..."

Glenn explained.

Then he briefly recounted what he and his companion had witnessed.

"OMG......"

After hearing this, Jacqueline was so shocked that she didn't know what to say. She began to regret her impulsive decision to go out.

"Perhaps it's an exception..."

Glenn said somewhat uncertainly.

"No, no, no, you're not Black, so you wouldn't understand."

T immediately refuted Glenn's point of view, and then he said:

"The education I received growing up was mostly about staying away from armed white people and police, and the military has always been even more brutal..."

Atlanta is no longer safe. I think we'd better leave the city and come back when things calm down.

Jacques empathized and nodded in agreement with T-boy's suggestion.

"The streets are full of monsters and soldiers; we should find a place to hide."

Glenn, on the other hand, felt it was too dangerous to drive around the city like that now.

He saw that a group of infected people had followed the car, and the number was increasing.

"Perhaps I know a route that can get us out of the city quickly..."

Jacques' eyes lit up; as an urban planner, she remembered a very good safe route.

"What way?"

Glenn and T asked in unison.

"...railway line."

...outside of Atlanta.

This is the road leading to Atlanta, and it's now jammed with cars—people fleeing from all directions, heading to the Atlanta safety zone for asylum.

Night had quietly fallen, and due to the long traffic jam and endless waiting, panic and anxiety were building up in everyone's hearts.

Arguments, quarrels, and fights broke out frequently on the road, and the situation was slowly deteriorating. Some people were hiding in their cars, crying helplessly.

Sean and Lori have been stuck here for more than ten hours.

Here, they met the Carole family.

Little Carl and Sofia are close in age, and after the two children got to know each other, they played chess to pass the time.

Sizzle...

Sean sat in the car, constantly adjusting the radio, hoping to get some useful information; he had been trying for a long time.

But starting this afternoon, all radio channels seem to have stopped broadcasting; there's no sound at all...

The night sky was quite busy, with planes constantly flying overhead, which made people feel that the government's power still existed and offered some comfort.

In the night sky, the buzzing sound of another helicopter roared past.

Sean peered out of the car at the dark sky, trying to discern something.

"Are we about to leave?"

Sofia, who was playing chess with Carl, heard another plane fly by and looked up at her mother Carol, asking a question.

"I don't know either, baby, I hope so."

Carol said gently, she didn't know when they could set off.

“I’m so hungry…”

Little Carl then turned to Lori, who was sitting to the side, and said...

Lori stared blankly at the necklace in her hand; it was Rick's wedding ring.

After Rick was admitted to the hospital, she took him along with his personal belongings, and to prevent them from getting lost, she strung them on a necklace.

Hearing what little Karl said, she came to her senses. She didn't have any good ideas either, and could only say helplessly:

“I know, Carl, everyone is hungry.”

They left yesterday afternoon and rushed all the way to Atlanta, and by noon today, all the food they brought had been consumed.

In this situation, food is important to everyone.

They wanted to buy food but couldn't, and they were stuck here with no way to find food, so they could only endure it for the time being.

“I’ll go get him some food. Ed is very knowledgeable about survival skills. Our fast food is enough to feed a small army.”

Carol heard this and kindly said to Lori.

"Thank you then."

Lori quickly got down and thanked Carol.

"fine."

Carroll said that she was going to get something from the car.

But as soon as she opened the car door, her husband pressed it down. Carole looked at him in surprise, only to see him questioning her with a displeased expression:

"Why did you tell her this? We don't even know these people."

“That child is hungry, we can take out a box.”

Carole realized she might have been presumptuous, and she tried to explain.

"This is called... operating in secrecy."

If you keep doing this indiscriminate charity, all this stuff will be gone in no time.

Edward was annoyed by his wife's excessive maternal instincts, which he considered a very thoughtless act.

It's like announcing to everyone that I have food and they should come and take it from me.

"I'm sorry, I didn't think much of it."

Carroll apologized somewhat awkwardly.

Lori, who was in the back of the car, saw this, but quickly pretended not to see it and awkwardly turned away...

"Did you find anything?"

Lori returned to Sean's car and asked Sean what had happened.

"Nothing."

Sean shook his head.

"Not surprising at all."

Lori had been waiting from afternoon until late at night, and she already had a premonition.

"No, I mean, nothing... The emergency broadcast system has stopped, and the recordings of news from the refugee resettlement center are gone."

Sean got out of the car and looked at the endless line of cars blocking the road ahead. He said to Lori:

"I'll walk forward and see what I can find."

"I will go with you."

Lori turned around and said, and when she looked back she saw little Carl eating the snacks Carol had given him.

“It seems Ed forgot to pack those fast food items. I found this in my bag.”

Carol explained to Lori somewhat apologetically.

"It's okay... Listen, could you watch over Carl for me for a while?"

Lori understood perfectly. She paused for a moment and then asked Carol for help.

"Ok."

Carol looked at little Carl and immediately agreed, saying that she liked the cute little boy very much too.

Moreover, Karl got along very well with Sofia.

"Sean and I are going to go ahead and scout things out to see if we can find anyone who knows anything about the situation."

Lori tidied up Karl's hair and gave him some instructions.

"I want to go with you."

Little Carl immediately said.

"No."

Lori shook her head firmly, then bent down and kissed little Carl on the hair.

"Don't worry, we'll be back soon, okay, little man?"

Sean affectionately patted little Carl's head, then led Lori forward.

Why have they stopped broadcasting news about refugee resettlement centers?

Lori asked Sean as she walked.

"I do not know either."

Do you think they've stopped hiring?

"If that's the case, it will definitely cause unrest."

Sean looked at the people who were waiting anxiously and said this.

The two drifted further and further apart...
