Chapter 35 The Birthday of Guinness
The cold, silvery-white muzzle of the gun was pressed against Fan Ze Zhenren's forehead, the faint flash of light flickering with his trembling breaths, the atmosphere tense to the extreme.
"Do you have anything else to say, Guinness?" Kuromon Haruya sneered as he released the safety from his pistol.
Fanze Zhenren closed his eyes nonchalantly: "Hmph, Butbel, I've said everything I needed to say."
A sigh came from the phone playing a conversation on the table: "In that case, let's make our move."
Haruya Kuromon: "Cherish your last moments."
Bang!
Fanze Zhenren clasped his hands together and blew out the candles on the cake.
Sequins and pink ribbons burst from the gun barrels, adorning various parts of the room. The nightclub's crystal ball, hanging from the ceiling, spun at supersonic speed, reflecting colorful spots and ripples of light.
Haruya Kuromon/Senami Asano: "Happy birthday, Mr. Hanzawa!"
"Mr. Kuromon, Mr. Aso, thank you—"
Fanze Zhenren blinked hard, unable to suppress the moisture, and looked at Kuromon Yaoya with teary eyes:
"But could you turn the light down a bit? It's making me dizzy."
"The initial rotation speed was so fast!"
Despite saying this, Yoruichi Kuromon adjusted the speed back to normal mode, without mentioning that he had forgotten to restore it when testing the optical engineering with this light.
Today is July 2nd, which is the birthday of Fanze Zhenren!
This might not fully capture the significance of this day, but if we place the "birthday celebration" within the context of the Detective Conan universe, the twists and turns it carries become clear.
In Beika Town, where the six months cycle endlessly, there are countless holidays such as Valentine's Day, New Year's Day, and Christmas to celebrate. However, birthdays, which are fixed on ordinary dates, are not so easy to come by.
Just because today is July 1st doesn't mean tomorrow is my birthday. Beika Town never has a precise date.
Moreover, birthday celebrations mean more people, which in turn increases the likelihood of murder; many residents' birthdays are also their death anniversaries. If one is unlucky, they might die a violent death before even celebrating their birthday!
Therefore, when Kuromon Haruya realized that he could celebrate Hanzawa Masato's birthday, he did not intend to let the opportunity pass.
Fanze Zhenren, however, feigned reluctance, saying, "A man's birthday is fine as it is."
Asagi sighed on the phone, "That's great, I wish I could be there too."
They had originally planned to celebrate together, but unfortunately, the drug addicts keeping watch on them were planning a big event, so they could only celebrate remotely.
Fanze Zhenren understood his companion's obsession and didn't mind: "I remember you've been working with Bourbon quite a bit lately in Vienna?"
"Yes, we've tracked them all the way to the vicinity of Okinawa. Once we've cleared this area, we'll call it a day."
Asagi looked out the car window; Bourbon was leaning against a telephone pole, studying the movements of the poisonous insects.
Vienna Whiskey, after joining the organization, quickly became known for his swift and efficient detoxification efforts; nine out of ten of the missions he took on were related to this.
Asagi originally thought that his way of doing things would be rejected, but the organization was surprisingly accepting of him.
The reasons are actually quite simple: first, the organization's principles exclude such items; second, the groups involved are mostly quite large and compete with the organization, so Gin is happy to have an efficient and ruthless cleaner to help remove obstacles.
Some time ago, to facilitate his operations, Rum even arranged for Bourbon from the intelligence department to go and assist him.
These cushy jobs were mostly introduced by Kagemitsu Kurokawa, and were among the tasks that Rei Furuya most enjoyed performing.
Kuromon Haruya leaned closer and asked, "Okinawa? Doesn't that mean we're almost at the vicinity of a military base?"
Asagi said with some regret, "Yes, it's a pity we can't touch the source."
After investigating for so long, some inside information is something everyone knows.
Yoruichi Kuromon nodded, knowing that both of them were careful in their actions: "Although the possibility is slim, you should be careful not to run into Shuichi Akai."
Asahi's expression turned serious: "Why do you say that? Is there any new information?"
"Cough cough."
Yoya Kuromon cleared his throat, mimicking Shuichi Akai's voice, "Because repelling threats against Japan is one of the missions of the U.S. military stationed in Japan."
Bourbon watched Asagi Shigemi laughing and covering her mouth in her seat, then raised his hand to suppress the nostalgia welling up in his chest. The last time he experienced this youthful and joyful atmosphere, the five petals of the cherry blossoms were still intact.
During their month-long collaboration, the two had developed some rapport. Asagi saw Bourbon approaching and tapped her phone lightly as a signal, then rolled down her car window.
Before they could even exchange a word, they heard Master Fanze on the other side laughing and jeering, "Hahaha, let's do it again!"
"Defeating threats against Japan is one of the missions of the U.S. military stationed in Japan!"
His chocolate-colored face darkened several shades in an instant. Seeing the dark aura on Bourbon's face, Asagi quickly said goodbye and ended the conversation: "I'm all done here. Let's continue with the mission."
Bourbon: ^_^
Kuromon Haruya, deliberately repeating the phrase, looked down at her phone, which displayed the end of the call. She blinked innocently and said, "Looks like Mr. Aso is busy. Let's eat some cake then!"
Mentioning the birthday cake, Fanze Zhenren grinned and pulled out a saw he had prepared long ago from under the bed, his eyes turning blood red with a scarlet killing intent.
"Yes, it's time for the execution, Shinichi Kudo!"
Crack, crackle.
Thick strawberry jam flowed from "Shinichi Kudo's" wound, splattering onto the floor.
Looking at the expensive, custom-made Shinichi Kudo fan-style cake he had commissioned, Yoya Kuromon whispered in his ear, "How is it? This cake is pretty good, isn't it?"
"Truly a masterpiece." Masato Hanzawa licked the jam off the saw blade, almost able to picture his future as he personally slew his nemesis…
"Ouch, I scratched my tongue!"
"Use medical cotton balls to stop the bleeding first."
A few minutes later, a full, dark face was reflected in the mirror.
Fanze Zhenren felt that the cotton in his mouth was no longer within the scope of medical treatment; it was more likely to choke him to death.
After pondering for a moment, Heimen Yaoye turned around and decided to seek outside help: "I'll go to the nearby pharmacy to ask how to handle this. Don't move around here."
"Ugh! Ugh! Ugh! Ugh! Do I have to keep the cotton in my mouth forever? My tongue is so dry!"
Fanze Zhenren was gesturing wildly with a saw in his hand.
Ding-dong, the doorbell rang.
"Is Mr. Hanzawa Masato home? There's a package for you here!"
When Heimen Yaoye opened the door, he saw a courier in a yellow and purple uniform dragging a cardboard box that was half his height, with a forced smile.
"Such a big package! Thank you for your help. I received it on behalf of Fanze because he had something come up. Is that alright?" Heimen Youye took the delivery slip from the courier.
The mailing address was Izumo City, the hometown of Hanzawa, so it seemed to be a birthday gift from a relative.
"No, of course, no problem!" The deliveryman wiped the sweat from his brow, took the order, and quickly turned to go downstairs.
Kuromon Haruya dragged a huge cardboard box into the room: "Mr. Hanzawa, there's a package for you."
"Ptooey, ptooey, ptooey! I'm coming right away!"
After pulling the last wad of cotton out of his mouth and feeling no pain, Fanze Zhenren ignored the still-bleeding wound and walked out: "Oh right, my mom seemed to have said a few days ago that she was going to send some local specialties from our hometown."
"Stop right there! Surrender now!"
Kogoro Mouri, along with Conan, Ran, and an unfamiliar woman, rushed into the room and cautiously surveyed the scene.
“Mr. Mori, that’s the man! Look, there’s a blood-soaked human head on their table!”
The deliveryman who had just left stepped back from the crowd, reaching out in alarm to the "Shinichi Kudo" sign on the cardboard box table.
"No, no, you've misunderstood."
Fanze Zhenren subconsciously reached out to explain, but forgot that he was holding a highly suspicious, bloodstained saw in his hand. As he swung his arm, crimson blood splattered onto the delivery man's face.
Uncle: "Aaaaaaah, don't come any closer!"
Kogoro Mouri slapped the deliveryman on the shoulder, signaling him to calm down: "Hey! Can you look carefully? It's just a cake shaped like a human head."
Hearing her father say that, Ran Mouri walked to the table, dipped some of the blood plasma in it, and put it in her mouth: "It really is! This strawberry jam is so delicious!"
"The sweet and sour sauce is mixed with fruit pieces, sweet but not cloying, it's a very good quality type... but why does this head shape look so familiar?"
A strong force nearly ripped his pants off his crotch. Kuromon Haruya silently tightened his belt and looked at Kudo Shinichi, who was scrutinizing him with deadpan eyes beside him.
Conan poked Haruya Kuromon's leg, his tone utterly innocent: "Huh? That's weird, why is this cake shaped like Shinichi's brother?"
Ran Mouri stared intently, shuddered, and retreated step by step to her father's side.
Kuromon Haruya looked at Hanzawa, whose expression was conflicted: "Because..."
"Because I'm a huge fan of Shinichi Kudo!"
When he uttered this pre-arranged explanation, Fanze Zhenren felt as if he had died once.
"I, I idolize Shinichi Kudo so much, he's my Sherlock Holmes, so I specially ordered this cake from the Shinichi Kudo fan club!"
A fan club for Shinichi Kudo? Ran Mouri wondered.
"I'm Sherlock Holmes!" Conan said smugly.
Seeing that Hanze was so disgusted that he vomited his soul, Kuromon Haruya stepped forward to help him:
"Today is Mr. Fanze's birthday, and that amulet was obtained for him. Mr. Fanze is very shy and asked everyone to keep it a secret."
"Oh, I see! It was a misunderstanding!"
The deliveryman scratched his head sheepishly, and just as he was about to apologize, he saw a stream of blood flowing from the corner of Fan Ze Zhenren's mouth.
"The wound has reopened, Mr. Fanze, open your mouth quickly, let's stuff a medical cotton ball in!"
Kuromon Haruya led Hanze into the bathroom, closed the door, and whispered, "What's going on?"
With a cotton ball in his mouth, Fanze Zhenren showed the stranger he had just secretly photographed with his phone: "Tachibana Maya, a professional assassin, has taken on several missions on the organization's sub-site."
"I see, I understand now. Her target shouldn't be us."
The woman was very alert, physically fit, and showed signs of training.
Kuromon Haruya noticed this as soon as she entered, which makes sense if she is a professional assassin.
Seeing that his reaction was normal, Fan Ze was relieved: "That's good."
After clearing up the misunderstanding, Hanzawa Masato invited Mori and his group to stay for a while, arguing that it would be good to have more people to celebrate.
Kogoro Mouri thought that since he had been busy for half a day trying to find out about Ms. Tachibana Maya's background, he might as well take a break and sort out the information.
"What? This young lady has amnesia?"
Fan Zezhen's expression was strange. How could a professional assassin suffer from amnesia? What kind of new script is this?
Ran Mouri stared at Shinichi Kudo's eyes in her plate, holding her fork in her mouth, and said worriedly, "Yes, we were attacked by someone in a car on our way back."
If that's the case, then the target is most likely the Mori main characters.
Maya Tachibana tucked her short hair behind her ears, revealing her widow's peak peeking shyly from under her headband, making her look like a melancholy beauty.
Should a minor character with decent physical abilities be recruited as cannon fodder for the organization, or sent to the lab as research material...?
Maya Tachibana felt a deep, terrifying chill. She looked up but saw no threat.
"Miss Tachibana, did you remember something?" Kuromon Haruya picked up her hot tea and took a sip. "If you have any clues, we can help you analyze them."
"I can't think of anything right now." Tachibana Maya turned her head away, her subconscious telling her not to reveal any more information.
"Maybe you're a wilderness survival enthusiast."
With a friendly yet graceful manner, Kuromon Haruya lifted the spiral necklace around her neck, pinched the end of the pendant and pulled it outwards, revealing a thin, sharp iron wire to everyone.
"Because this necklace also contains threads that can cut wood."
Maya Tachibana stared at the wire, speechless, then clutched her head in agony, crying out, "It hurts, it hurts so much, I don't want to remember—"
She suddenly stood up and rushed out the door before anyone could react.
"Miss Tachibana, wait a minute!" Seeing this, Kogoro Mouri hurriedly chased after them, with Conan and Ran following closely behind, leaving only Haruya Kuromon and Hanzawa looking at each other.
Fanze turned on the location system and shared it. The transmitter that Kuromon Haruya had stuck to her clothes earlier showed Tachibana Maya's coordinates.
Kuromon Haruya stood up and put on his communication headset: "I remember there was a long-term mission to recruit talent for the organization, right? Shall we do some activities after dinner?"
After quickly devouring Shinichi Kudo, Fanzawa patted his belly in agreement.
"The Last Supper, ostensibly a closed sushi restaurant, is in fact a neutral meeting place for shady deals."
When Fanze Zhenren saw the shop sign, the relevant information automatically came to mind.
Upon joining the intelligence team, the first thing newcomers need to do is memorize the power distribution and information of their assigned area. Only after gaining a thorough understanding can they be qualified to uncover deeper intelligence for the organization.
Therefore, every member of the intelligence team possesses a wealth of information about the underworld, and each time they discover an undercover agent, it infuriates Gin.
Based on Maya Tachibana's movements, they deduced her destination in advance and laid an ambush there.
"A man entered the house, and Tachibana Maya entered right after him. Tachibana Maya then came out alone!"
Fanzawa Masato looked at Tachibana Maya, who had appeared alone, and spoke with excitement.
“She broke the rules by acting from a neutral position.” Kuromon Haruya understood the implication in his words and chuckled, “Then our intervention wouldn’t be considered a violation.”
Whether this assassin was out of her mind or had something else to rely on, she actually broke the rules protecting her.
Kuromon Haruya put on his hat and, like a ghost, darted toward the figure.
