Chapter 33 Acting Instructor: Kogoro Mouri
"Brother Heimen, Brother Heimen! Aren't you up yet?"
Having had so much free time that he started adjusting his shoulder strap, Conan stood outside the door of F401, trying to see through the door with his dead fish eyes.
"I'm coming--"
Letting out a long yawn, Haruka Kuromon, half-asleep and still in her pajamas, opened the door for Conan before collapsing back onto the bed.
"Shinichi, if it's another event where you have to look after kids at a haunted house, don't ask me to come. It's kind of creepy."
Haruya Kuromon's voice was muffled under the covers, sounding somewhat unclear, but Conan felt it was more likely that he himself was slurring his words.
Conan entered the apartment and took the opportunity to carefully observe the layout of the room.
The apartment features a minimalist black and white style, but the addition of warm-toned furniture creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
The area on the left side of the entrance, which was originally a closet, has been transformed into a semi-open kitchen, complete with pots, pans, and even some professional food processing equipment.
Upon entering through the foyer, the first thing that catches the eye is the bird-shaped chandelier hanging in the living room.
The front half of the living room is furnished with a dining table and a display cabinet. There are a few bunches of foxtail grass in the vase on the dining table, which were obviously picked by Brother Heimen as he passed by.
The back half of the living room is a relaxation area, with a brown L-shaped fabric sofa occupying half of the carpet. A small movie projector is placed in the corner behind the sofa, and opposite it is an entire off-white wall.
The clean and orderly interior environment indicates that the homeowner is someone who values quality of life.
"Hey, Kuromon-kun, why is your calendar still stuck in last month?"
Conan jumped onto the sofa and curiously held up the calendar marked with unidentified graffiti: "Does the graffiti on this have any special meaning?"
Lying half-dead in a pile of blankets, Kuromon Haruya replied, "Those are the photographic inspirations I record every day."
God knows how time passes in this world!
He felt like he had only been in bed for an hour, but when he woke up and looked at the clock, it was already 10 p.m.! He probably slept through the whole day!
Looking at his photography blog, fans are having a heated discussion in the comments section about what broke his habit of updating once a month.
After several unsuccessful attempts to change things, Kuromon Haruya simply followed her instincts and began living a life where day and night were randomized.
"It's already one o'clock in the afternoon." Conan noticed the pills and water glass on the bedside table, and poked Kuromon Haruya. "What kind of pills are these? Kuromon-nii, are you sick?"
"Of course it's your favorite aptx-4869," Kuromon Haruya replied in her mind.
His gaze was vacant as he let his body move freely according to instinct, his mind wandering: "It's a minor hereditary ailment, nothing serious. Conan, be good, don't eat things that aren't candy."
Hey! You're not even focusing your attention, Kuromon-kun!
Just as Yoruichi Kuromon was about to pour water into his ears, Conan preemptively wet his hands and flicked the water onto Kuromon's neck.
Haruya Kuromon: ! !
The sound of wind cutting past Conan's nose was followed by a spinning kick from Kuromon Haruya, leaving a crater in the wall.
"Oh! I'm sorry, Conan, are you alright?"
Haruya Kuromon helped the still-shaken Conan to his feet: "When I'm suddenly woken up, I instinctively get grumpy and can't control it. Sorry for scaring you."
Does this indiscriminate killing count as morning grumpiness?!
The last time Conan experienced such a life-or-death moment was in front of Ran. He silently added "I can't wake up the sleeping Kuromon" to his mental to-do list.
"Mr. Mori is going to be a TV drama advisor today, right?"
Yoya Kuromon didn't quite remember this kind of plot that had nothing to do with the organization, and was quite shocked to learn that Kogoro Mouri had met Yoko Okino before.
Conan nodded: "Yes! Uncle Mori and the others are leaving soon, so they asked me to come and let you know."
"OK, I'll meet up with you guys in a bit."
At the appointed time, Kuromon Haruya got into the car rented by the Mori family and embarked on a trip to watch the filming of a TV series.
"Kuromon has been having a tough time lately," Kogoro Mouri remarked, glancing at the sleeping figure of Haruya Kuromon leaning against the car window in the rearview mirror.
Conan disagreed, noticing the Switch game console scattered around the bed: "I think maybe he was playing games too late~"
"You brat, all you know how to do is spend money, not make it. What nonsense are you spouting!" Kogoro Mouri glared at Conan with annoyance.
The child said he was staying at their house temporarily, but his parents never showed up, and he paid for all the child support out of his own pocket.
In contrast, Kuromon Haruya's photo shoot brought him a lot of business!
The filming location for this TV series is not far away; you can get there quickly by car.
As soon as Kuromon Haruya got out of the car, he saw a middle-aged man wearing a beret and with a big belly walk up to Kogoro Mouri and greet him with a smile.
After exchanging pleasantries, the director stepped forward and scrutinized Kuromon Haruya closely. "Young man, which studio are you an artist with?"
“Director Gento, he’s not an actor.” Kogoro Mouri stepped between the two, took Yoya Kuromon’s arm, and introduced him, “He’s the rising star photographer I was going to bring!”
Kuromon Haruya blinked and politely introduced herself: "Hello, I'm photographer Kuroba, my name is Kuromon Haruya."
"I see, it's a pleasure to meet you!" Director Gento looked at Ran and tentatively asked, "Then this beautiful lady must be...?"
Kogoro Mouri laughed heartily: "She is my daughter, Ran Mouri! The one next to her is a kid who is fostered in my house, ignore him."
Conan's forehead creased with a tic-tac-toe expression, clearly dissatisfied with Kogoro Mouri's favoritism.
"Shinichi, look! This is the first time I've ever seen a live TV drama crew!" Kuromon Haruya squatted down next to Conan, pointing to the shrine that served as the filming location.
"Hey, aren't you a professional photographer?" Conan was extremely annoyed as he watched the male celebrity fawning over Ran.
"I am a professional, that's true, but I haven't filmed any portraits until recently."
To prevent unnecessary identity entanglements, this identity has almost no social interactions before entering the main storyline, and things like photographing characters are not even considered.
"Is that so?"
Conan recalled the time when he first met Yoruichi Kuromon; he had indeed mentioned that he knew almost no one in Japan. If not in Japan, then not in Italy either?
Of course, he didn't raise this question directly, after all, Shinichi Kudo still has some emotional intelligence when dealing with people other than Ran.
The filming process wasn't as fun as I'd imagined. When a scene was repeatedly filmed amidst all sorts of camera equipment, it always felt like a jarring, business-like affair to watch.
With Yoko Okino's final, deafening scream, filming here came to an end.
The actor, Mr. Nachi, who had previously flirted with Ran, turned around and flirted with Ms. Mamegaki, the heiress of the shrine on set, after filming ended.
The director, already used to the actors' style, skillfully stepped forward to smooth things over: "Sorry, Ms. Taeko and Mr. Shimazaki are getting married next month."
Yuji Shimazaki works as an AD (assistant director) in the production team. He is a generous and cheerful young man.
"Humph."
A sarcastic remark that ruined the atmosphere rang out. Mr. Anzai, the photography assistant, stared at the newlyweds cuddling together with ill intent. "Some people are like flowers before they get married, but that's just an illusion."
Seemingly to appear less aggressive, Anzai Morio added a few more words:
"But I'm just saying this generally, like how some people seek fame and fortune at a young age, right, little brother?"
As he spoke, Kuromon Haruya noticed that dark gaze crept through the crowd and looked at...himself?
Responding to the intense gaze, Kuromon Haruya walked straight up to him and asked, "May I ask, Mr. Anzai, how old are you this year?"
Anzai Morio scoffed and glared at her: "I'm twenty-five years old this year. What? Don't I look like it?"
Everyone was astonished: What!
Upon hearing this, the eyes of the entire crew quietly focused on Anzai Morio's face.
His pointed face, with its slanted eyes that glared menacingly, and his prominent cheekbones and hooked nose perfectly shaped his sharp and mean-spirited appearance. He couldn't possibly be twenty-five!
"So, I'm twenty-six this year, which makes me Mr. Anzai's senior!"
Kuromon Haruya stared intently at a wrinkle that had appeared on Anzai's face from his long-term unpleasant expression, observing it carefully.
Sure enough, his advice to Gin to smile more was correct; otherwise, given the organization's workload and level of concern, even drinking the Elixir of Immortality wouldn't be enough.
"Oh my god, I thought Kuroba-sensei was at most the same age as me!" Yoko Okino exclaimed repeatedly, her eyes shining as she looked at Haruya Kuromon.
She's only 22, in the prime of her life, but that doesn't mean she can slack off on maintaining her appearance. As a popular female celebrity, skincare is of paramount importance!
Upon closer inspection, Yoko Okino discovered that Haruya Kuromon not only lacked scars and dullness, but also had no wrinkles or large pores!
"Ms. Kuroba, could you please teach me some skincare methods?"
Kuromon Haruya tilted her head in thought, then tentatively replied, "Sleep when you feel sleepy, and keep a happy mood?"
Anzai Morio, seeing that the two had drawn his attention away, spat in annoyance, put on the skull watch on his wrist that was emitting a strange laugh, and turned to leave to pack up his equipment.
Kuromon Haruya glanced at his back and concluded in her heart: if nothing unexpected happens, he is the victim this time.
Taeko Mamegaki's grandfather, Kyusaku Mamegaki, the head priest of the shrine, looked at the artificial blood on the ground with a worried expression: "Taeko, make sure to clean all of this up after filming."
Taeko: "I understand, Grandpa."
Hearing the conversation, Kuromon Haruya stepped forward and said, "Good day, Abbot. Is the shrine still open for visits today? I would like to get a birthday amulet for a friend."
Looking at the fiery red twilight, the abbot shook his head: "It's getting late, so there's no need for a visit. But I happen to have an extra one with me, so please accept it if you don't mind."
"Thank you." Kuromon Haruya accepted the amulet from the abbot. The fabric, carefully maintained by its owner over a long period, was still vibrant, and the wear and tear was barely noticeable unless one looked closely.
This amulet was clearly more than just an extra one; he looked at the abbot: "It's so valuable..."
"Consider it my destiny to give it to your friend!" The abbot interrupted Kuromon Haruya, casually waving his hand as he walked away.
Conan was pulled by Ran out of the woods and saw the amulet in Kuromon Haruya's hand. He teased, "Kuromon-kun, you didn't get this amulet just because you're afraid of ghosts, did you?"
Kuromon Haruya put the amulet in his pocket and explained, "How could that be? This is a gift for my friend. His birthday is on July 2nd."
"Isn't July 2nd still several months away?" Conan looked at Haruya Kuromon with a puzzled expression, then raised his eyebrows. "Oh, I see, I have a friend..."
“Kudo…” Kuromon Haruya stared calmly at Conan.
Ran Mouri's Kudo radar instantly activated: "Shinichi? Kuromon-kun, did you mention Shinichi?!"
Conan immediately dropped his smug look and clung tightly to his trouser leg, giving a meaningful glance.
Haruya Kuromon: "I was just thinking about whether I should ask Shinichi for a share while I was at it."
"That sounds good! I'll ask the abbot for help tomorrow too."
Seeing that the topic had been diverted by Yoruichi Kuromon, Conan breathed a sigh of relief: "Shinichi-nii doesn't believe in these things, does he?"
"Conan, you don't understand! It's not the gift itself that matters, but the thought behind it."
Ran Mouri gently tapped Conan's forehead and whispered to the sunset on the horizon.
"Shinichi is a deduction fanatic. He doesn't care about himself when he encounters a case, and he has narrowly escaped danger several times. Even though I believe in him, this feeling of worry will not change."
Conan: Ran…
The young couple looked at each other, their sweet and sour scent of love slowly filling the air, making it hard to breathe.
By the time they came to their senses, Yoya Kuromon had already returned to the main force with Kogoro Mouri.
The Mori crew stayed at the nearby Beika Inn with the film crew, while Nachi Shingo, who considered himself a handsome and sophisticated man, refused to stay in an ordinary place and left first.
"Brother Kuromon, another drink!" Kogoro Mori exclaimed, sticking out his tongue and gesturing wildly as he drank.
Kuromon Haruya took the full glass of beer from him and calmly sipped it.
After a tiring day at work, the best way to reward yourself is, of course, to have a big meal, and socializing is naturally an option.
The men in the crew were pulled into one room for a drinking and dining party, while the women and children like Conan ate and chatted in the next room.
Seeing that the atmosphere was getting so hot that they were about to take off their clothes and become sworn brothers, Kuromon Haruya quickly used the excuse of taking care of the camera to leave and stand in the courtyard outside the hotel to enjoy the night breeze.
Not long after, a furtive figure, seemingly searching for something, left the hotel and walked into the distance.
"Is that Anzai Morio? It seems his time to die is near."
Kuromon Haruya stood on the path, watching the direction he had left in the distance.
Just then, a familiar female voice rang out from behind: "I'm here... Ah, it's Mr. Kuromon, sorry, I mistook you for someone else!"
When Kuromon Yoya turned around, the displeasure on Mamegaki Taeko's face immediately disappeared, and she nervously stuffed the items in her hands back into her pockets.
"Miss Mamegaki, good evening. Are you looking for someone?"
Kuromon Haruya certainly didn't miss the murderous intent that had been gradually approaching from behind. He glanced at the outline protruding from the pocket and recognized it as a switchblade that could be used as a murder weapon.
