Chapter 20 The Wedding of the Nightingale and the Rose (Part 2)

"Little Lily...you're so pretty!"

Even though he had spent seven years with her and was mentally prepared, Toshihiko Takasugi was still amazed when he saw Sayuri Matsumoto.

His steps were so hurried and tense that a note tucked in his pocket fell to the ground.

Conan, standing to the side, picked up the piece of paper and examined its contents:

[The lemon liqueur I intended as a wedding gift broke and spilled during transport. As an apology, I bought a bottle of wine and placed it in the groom's dressing room; alkaline wine is good for the wedding night! —Taro Iga]

This slightly adult-themed note made Conan blush. How could anyone name someone like Iga Taro? It sounds like an old man!

"Big brother, you dropped the note in your left pocket!" Conan stood on tiptoe and tugged at Takasugi Toshihiko.

Left pocket?!

Takasugi Toshihiko withdrew his hand from the lemon tea, hurriedly turned to Conan, and snatched the note to examine it.

Something was wrong. His strange behavior caught Conan's attention. If he didn't know the contents of the note, why was he acting so flustered just now?

Conan tried using his cute voice, the kind he often used with female special agents, to ask, "Big brother, what does 'wedding night' mean on this piece of paper?"

These were all tricks that Takasugi Toshihiko had used to death over the years, so how could he fall for them? He clutched the small glass bottle containing sodium hydroxide in his left pocket, and replied somewhat awkwardly, "Little brother, you'll understand when you grow up."

When Matsumoto Sayuri heard Conan's question, she seemed to realize something, blushed, and lowered her head. For a moment, the atmosphere in the preparation room became somewhat ambiguous and sticky.

"It's almost time. Please get ready, you two."

The emcee opened the door to confirm the process, which finally put the other single people at ease.

"Oh no!" Kuromon Haruya seemed to remember something and quickly packed up his photography equipment.

Xiao Lan looked at his long guns and short cannons with some confusion: "What's wrong, Brother Heimen?"

"I need to adjust the camera positions in advance. If the shooting positions are occupied by other guests, I will have to adjust and communicate in time. I'm going now!" After leaving an explanation, Kuromon Haruya picked up the camera and sped away.

"As expected, a man who is serious is the most handsome! Look at how seriously Kuromon was working just now, he was really good." Sonoko Suzuki secretly pulled up a work photo she had taken with her phone.

"Sonoko, even though Kuromon-nii has no problem with it, it's impolite to take pictures of others without their permission!"

However, when it comes to working seriously... Ran Mouri blushed and nodded in agreement, recalling Shinichi Kudo's earnest and confident demeanor when he cornered a criminal.

Takasugi Toshihiko glanced at the time, then waved goodbye to the bride: "Sayuri, I'm going back to the preparation room now."

Ran Mouri watched Toshihiko Takasugi walk away through the door, and inexplicably had a premonition that this wedding would not be peaceful.

When Conan approached him, Kuromon Haruya was discussing camera positions and shooting details with the photographer responsible for filming from the groom's perspective.

"Brother Heimen, something terrible has happened! Come quick!"

Seeing Conan's familiar gesture, Kuromon Haruya's smile faded as she bid farewell to the male photographer and quietly asked, "Who was murdered this time?"

"Huh?" This question abruptly interrupted Conan's train of thought. "No, it's Mr. Takasugi who ran away..."

Kuromon Haruya's expression turned serious: "More than one person was murdered, and the groom has fled?"

Conan raised his hand to try and cover his mouth. He couldn't imagine what Kuromon would think if this continued. Unfortunately, his short arms were not long enough: "Mr. Takasugi has run away from his wedding! Come here quickly!"

At that moment, Ran and Sonoko emerged from the crowd in the banquet hall, shaking their heads dejectedly at Conan.

"Mr. Takasugi was not seen in the banquet hall either."

On their way back to the groom's dressing room, they encountered Takenaka Kazumi and several police officers who had also failed to find anything during their search.

In the lounge, Superintendent Matsumoto sat beside the sobbing Sayuri Matsumoto, offering quiet words of comfort. His face was pale. Takasugi Toshihiko's parents, President Takasugi and his wife, sat diagonally opposite them not far away, their expressions equally displeased.

Inspector Megure, seeing the two groups of people in front of and behind him remaining silent, had no choice but to report with a forced smile: "I'm sorry, we couldn't find Mr. Takasugi at the hotel. How about we listen to the recording again and look for clues?"

"That's all we can do," President Takasugi sighed as he pressed the button on the tape recorder on the table.

As the tape in the tape recorder started spinning again, Toshihiko Takasugi, with a voice that was both wistful and relieved, recounted his eventful life to everyone:

"By the time you hear this recording, I will have already fled Japan. Father, Mother, I'm sorry for the trouble my willfulness has caused you, and I'm very grateful for your upbringing. But I can't let go of this resentment of the past twenty years. Whenever I see Matsumoto Kiyonaga's face, I think of my mother's struggling expression because of the lack of timely help. If I stay in Japan, I will definitely commit a crime that no one will believe!"

"I'm sorry, Lily. From the very beginning, my purpose in meeting you was to seek revenge on your father, but as we spent more time together, I gradually softened with happiness. I've had enough of this life tormented by love and hate. From today onward, I'm leaving the past behind and starting a new life. I wish you find true love that deserves you."

Mrs. Takasugi rubbed her forehead with one hand, utterly exhausted: "The four of us have confirmed it; it is indeed Takasugi's voice. I thought he had forgotten about that incident and that it was just a coincidence with Miss Matsumoto."

Taking advantage of his child status, Conan completely ignored the atmosphere: "Uncle and Auntie, what exactly happened twenty years ago, as mentioned in the recording?"

“This…” The Takasugi couple exchanged a glance, then looked at Matsumoto Kiyonaga with some difficulty.

“Let me tell you,” Inspector Matsumoto took over, looking up to recall, “Twenty years ago, I was wholeheartedly pursuing a serial killer. When he got out of the car and fled, I didn’t even notice that he hit a pedestrian. It wasn’t until I reported it later that I learned that the mischievous kid I had swatted away was actually asking for help for his dying mother.”

But it was all too late. By the time I wanted to apologize in person, the family had already moved away. That child, it seems now, was Takasugi Toshihiko.

Matsumoto Kiyonaga held his daughter in his arms, tears glistening in his eyes: "Sayuri, you knew all along, didn't you? I'm sorry, it's clearly my fault, but I've caused you so much pain and distress."

Reality is always more torturous than drama; love cannot extinguish the flames of hatred, it only intensifies one's suffering. Although Matsumoto Kiyonaga's killing of another was unintentional during his arrest, his actions cannot be negated, and the mistake has already been made. Takasugi Toshihiko's revenge for his mother is reasonable, but it also harmed the Takasugi Group that adopted him and Matsumoto Sayuri, whom he deeply loved.

Yoya Kuromon stood behind the silent crowd, a faint smile playing on his lips. It was precisely because of the complexity of human nature that he was so fascinated by the tragedies of reality.

Finally, President Takasugi broke the deadlock. He coughed heavily and sealed the deal for today's farce: "If the outside world finds out about the elopement, both the Matsumoto and Takasugi families will lose face, especially since Sayuri is an unmarried woman. We will announce to the public that Toshihiko has suddenly fallen ill and needs to be hospitalized or even go abroad for treatment. We will discuss it again after the wedding."

"I hope everyone here can keep this a secret." Mrs. Takasugi stood up and glanced around, as if trying to remember everyone present. "If we find that child, let's have a good chat about what happened back then."

Although Conan believed that there were too many suspicious points surrounding Takasugi Toshihiko's disappearance, no one present wanted to provoke the group and the police, as both parties involved had agreed to keep quiet.

On the way back, Conan pulled Haruya Kuromon along behind, analyzing: "Kuromon-kun, I think this message is the key to Mr. Takasugi's disappearance. Look, the location mentioned in it where the wine was placed is the lounge where he left the tape. There must be other codes in there!"

“Hmm…” Kuromon Haruya lowered his eyes and pondered, “A code, huh? It can’t be that the lemon wine and wine mentioned in it are all code names of members of that organization, can it?”

Oh, right, the code name!

In his usual flash of inspiration, Conan remembered that Mr. Takasugi's mother had died from excessive blood loss after being hit by a car. Normally, one would simply say "the liquor broke during transport," rather than emphasizing "broken and spilled out." This "lemon liquor" was clearly a metaphor for his mother!
