Chapter 15: The Reversal of Roles Between the Living and the Dead
"Sonoko, slow down!"
The footsteps of the girls running are a unique silhouette of youth. On Beika Shopping Street, Sonoko Suzuki and Ran Mouri speed by, leaving a long trail of smoke behind them.
"No, no, how can I calm down, Ran! That's Kuroba-sensei!"
The incident began twenty minutes earlier.
After a tiring day, Sonoko Suzuki, having finally finished her studies, opened her phone as usual to check the updates of the celebrities she follows.
There's no announcement from Kaito Kid yet; no interest in the popular star's event announcement; I'll drag Ran along to my sister's class reunion in a few days; and the up-and-coming photographer, Kuroba, has started a photography project featuring Detective Kogoro Mouri...
Wait, Mr. Kuroba has decided to film Uncle Mori!
"That's Mr. Kuroba, who won the Higashikawa Award for Best Newcomer last year and will be competing for Photographer of the Year in a few years! Ran, didn't you see that famous 'Rondo of Black and White'? You didn't tell me about something so important!"
After being reminded by Sonoko Suzuki, Ran Mouri gradually recalled the widely discussed photo.
Beneath a fiery red sunset, pure white doves and jet-black crows chase each other, their paths occasionally intersecting to resemble the Chinese yin-yang symbol.
In the background, a plane with its left engine on fire and a kite that has broken free of its string happen to pass by at this moment, forming the two focal points of the Tai Chi symbol.
"Sonoko, this is the first time I've ever heard of this!"
Upon arriving at the second floor of the Mouri Detective Agency, Sonoko Suzuki slammed the door against the wall with a loud bang, and then saw Kogoro Mouri and Haruya Kuromon sitting opposite her, drinking tea.
"Uncle Mori! Oh, what a coincidence, Kuromon-kun, you're here too."
Even though she was about to faint from lack of oxygen after strenuous exercise, Sonoko Suzuki managed to regain her breath through her infatuation.
"It's Sonoko. What do you need me for?" Kogoro Mouri put down the photo album in his hand and looked at Sonoko, whose face had turned purple, with a puzzled expression.
"It's nothing, it's just that I saw that Mr. Kuroba posted your picture..." How strange, why does it feel like the area in front of my eyes has suddenly gone dark.
Ran Mouri supported Sonoko from behind, who was short of breath, and patted her back to help her catch her breath while explaining, "Sonoko is a fan of Kuroba-sensei. Dad, how did you get to know that famous photographer?"
"Huh? Didn't I tell you?"
Kogoro Mouri pulled up Haruya Kuromon, who was calmly drinking tea, and held the photo album up in front of Sonoko Suzuki and Ran Mouri.
"I, the famous detective Kogoro Mouri, reached a shooting collaboration agreement with the rising star photographer Haruya Kuromon a few days ago!"
In the photo album, through the processing of photographic art, the image of Kogoro Mouri catching cats and dogs, harassing women, drinking and smoking has been perfectly transformed into a mature and steady middle-aged handsome man who appears dejected on the surface but is actually warm-hearted on the inside!
"...Who is this?" Sonoko Suzuki chose not to accept the correct answer.
“Dad, the signature at the bottom is…!” Ran Mouri noticed the signature [to Eri Kisaki] in the corner of the photo.
After a moment of silence, a shout that seemed to tear the roof off shot straight into the sky.
"Kuromon-kun is Kuroba-sensei?!"
Sitting on the sofa, Yoruichi Kuromon held a cup of Kogoro Mouri's treasured hot tea and blinked innocently.
...
"Yay! I got the stunning half-body photos taken by Mr. Kuroba!" Sonoko Suzuki clutched the camera to her chest, excitedly wiggling her body. "I'll be entrusting all my future wedding photos, coming-of-age photos, and promotional photos to Mr. Kuroba!"
Ran Mouri looked at her youthful self on her phone, then sent a multimedia message to Shinichi Kudo, whom she hadn't heard from in a long time, and sighed with regret.
"It's a pity Conan isn't here, otherwise we could have taken a group photo."
"Conan's busy!" Kogoro Mouri came in from outside, rolling his eyes in annoyance. "Inspector Megure told me that while the Detective Boys were looking for the cat, they called the police to report that a body had been found in a private residence, but they couldn't find it anywhere."
The Junior Detective League, searching for a cat, a corpse.
If he remembers correctly, this was a murder case in which the younger brother impersonated the older brother.
Haruya Kuromon patted Kogoro Mouri on the shoulder and suggested, "Why don't we pick up Conan on the way? We can also stop by a nearby Chinese restaurant for a celebratory dinner for our collaboration. It'll be on me."
He had just recalled the highlights of this month's filming and realized that he was missing a shocking close-up of the prisoner.
I definitely didn't want to show everyone how a person can sleep like a corpse.
"I can't accept this. But since you've said so, Brother Kuromon, let's hurry and pick up the little devil!" Speaking of the Chinese restaurant, Kogoro Mori could already imagine the rich aroma of Lao Bai Gan (a type of Chinese liquor).
The crime scene wasn't far away. When they arrived at the location, they ran into Tanaka Tomofumi, the younger brother, who was getting off work at the securities company.
"I'm sorry, Inspector Megure, these kids have caused you trouble." Kogoro Mouri picked up Conan and expertly gave him a large red envelope.
Thanks to Uncle Mori's extensive connections, Kuromon Haruya and his group of four unrelated individuals managed to force their way to the crime scene. Whenever this happened, Kuromon Haruya would suspect that Inspector Megure was also a puppet master supported by some powerful organization.
As for why I said "also"? Well, it's because the organization has shoved a lot of people into the police system. Just ask Kurokawa Kagemitsu if you don't believe me.
Inspector Megure didn't seem to care: "It's fine. It's better if it turns out to be just a prank than a real murder."
No sooner had he finished speaking than Genta Kojima accidentally broke an old teapot on the cabinet right in front of the homeowner.
"Hey, you guys are so noisy! Can you please be quiet?" An exasperated shout came from upstairs, startling Ayumi so much that she shrank back.
Kogoro Mori peered up the stairs: "Who's upstairs?"
Tanaka Tomofumi handed the business card to Inspector Megure: "This is my older brother, Tanaka Kazuyu. Only the two of us brothers live in this house now, so there's no way there could be a body."
With lunchtime fast approaching, the officers from the First Investigation Division were still checking the eaves and floors of the houses one by one, so Yoruichi Kuromon decided to help them finish their work early.
He picked up Conan, who was lying on the floor studying the leaf, with one hand, and carried him up the stairs to the second floor in front of everyone.
Conan offered a token resistance: "Hey, what are you doing?"
"Shh." Kuromon Haruya gestured for silence and pointed to a bedroom emitting television broadcast sounds. "I want to prove your innocence."
Demanding that a non-professional handle the scene within fifteen minutes is too demanding. If the person investigating the scene were an organization cadre, the faint smell of blood in the air would quickly expose the murder.
A clear and pleasant female voice came from inside the room; it was easy to tell from the content that it was a weather forecast program.
Just as Kuromon Haruya grasped the doorknob, a hand reached out from behind and swiftly grabbed him. He turned around and saw that the person stopping him was Tanaka Tomofumi, who looked inexplicably anxious.
"This is my brother's room. He has a bad temper. Let me check on him for you first."
Seemingly realizing he had overreacted, Tanaka Tomofumi wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and offered a somewhat weak explanation.
He quickly opened the door. Inside the bedroom, a figure remarkably similar to his was silently leaning back in an armchair, the television in front of him broadcasting the day's weather.
"Brother, brother?" Tanaka Tomofumi leaned closer to the armchair and called softly, but received no response. "It's alright, my brother seems to be fast asleep."
Click click click.
The sound of a camera shutter came from the entrance of the room. Everyone turned around and saw Haruya Kuromon holding Conan in one arm and taking a picture of Kazuyu Tanaka on the chair.
Inspector Megure stepped forward to try and explain the privacy law: "Mr. Kuromon, it's not allowed to photograph a private residence without the owner's consent."
To make it easier for Conan to observe, Haruya Kuromon deliberately held him up to the corpse, his expression as natural as if he had just found a coin on the ground.
“But Inspector Megure, the gentleman in the chair is dead. Look, the skin on his face is sagging, and there’s a constant smell of blood in this room.”
"what!"
In an instant, a single sentence caused a huge uproar.
Inspector Megure and Kogoro Mouri quickly stepped forward to check on him, and the icy coldness emanating from his skin startled them.
If it weren't for Kuromon Haruya's reminder, these veteran police officers who had worked for many years might have been blinded by the criminals!
Seeing the astonished looks on everyone's faces, Tanaka Tomofumi knew that it was only a matter of time before he was arrested by the police. So he decided to go all out and grabbed a golf club from the corner of the room, intending to take the hostages.
Those two frail high school girls? Those mischievous brats? Or maybe we should just pick that mischievous boy!
Tanaka Tomofumi pounced on Edogawa Conan, who was engrossed in deduction, like a tiger descending a mountain.
"Wait, no!" Conan Edogawa turned around and saw this breathtaking scene.
Tanaka Tomofumi sneered inwardly. It's too late, brat. It's all your fault for ruining my killing plan!
"Brother Heimen, no!"
The sound of the camera cutting through the air came from behind my head, and after a crisp impact, a sharp pain, as if a thousand needles were piercing me at the same time, instantly struck me.
Tanaka Tomofumi saw the entire room begin to spin rapidly, then everything went black and he lost consciousness.
Behind him, a panting Yoruichi Kuromon was holding a camera, his legs giving way and he knelt on the ground, looking flustered and helpless.
"What should I do? Did I... kill someone?"
Conan immediately went over to check the criminal's vital signs. Fortunately, he was only knocked unconscious and his breathing was very steady.
But... he felt like he'd seen this scene somewhere before.
