When everyone arrived at the brigade headquarters, Feng Qingqing consciously separated from the other educated youth and went to the brigade office alone to find the cadres.

Knowing that Feng Qingqing would be coming to register this morning, the women's director, Zhang Xiumei, was already waiting here early in the morning. Since the appointment certificate had already been submitted to the brigade headquarters last night, this was just a simple formality.

Before long, Director Zhang took Feng Qingqing to the brigade clinic. The clinic was not far from the brigade headquarters; it consisted of two separate rooms: one was the main hall used for medical consultations, and the other was a personal bedroom.

This bedroom is currently occupied by Dr. Wang. After Dr. Wang leaves, Feng Qingqing can move in. After all, it would be convenient if someone came to see her at night.

It only took a few minutes to get there.

When they arrived, they found Doctor Wang arranging his herbs in the courtyard.

Zhang Xiumei stepped forward to inform Dr. Wang that Feng Qingqing would be taking over his job. Dr. Wang didn't look down on her just because she was a young girl. However, he wasn't particularly enthusiastic, and simply smiled and congratulated her on becoming the health worker at the clinic.

Zhang Xiumei seemed fine and was about to leave when she heard Doctor Wang say something to her:

"Director Zhang, look, the staff has arrived. I haven't been feeling well these past few days and want to get to my son's place as soon as possible. How about I leave first thing tomorrow morning?"

Dr. Wang did indeed wait for quite a few days, mainly because his son knew he hadn't been feeling well lately and kept sending telegrams urging him to come over as soon as possible; otherwise, he wouldn't have been in such a hurry.

Zhang Xiumei looked at Feng Qingqing with some hesitation. After all, Feng Qingqing was just an educated youth before, and the brigade was also taking a wait-and-see attitude towards her becoming a medic. But since she was selected from the commune hospital, they couldn't comment too much for the time being.

However, this clinic was responsible for the health of nearly a thousand people in the Lanshan Brigade. Although they were all minor ailments such as headaches and fevers, they couldn't be too outrageous.

Feng Qingqing noticed her hesitation and knew that although the brigade had accepted her as a medic, it was only an appointment from the commune, not an endorsement of her personally.

Feng Qingqing smiled faintly and said calmly:

"Dr. Wang, Director Zhang, please rest assured. Since the commune hospital chose me, there must be a reason. Besides, even if I have any questions, the commune hospital is there for me."

She wasn't trying to take on everything, but she could tell that Dr. Wang wasn't in particularly good condition and that he wanted to get back to his son as soon as possible, which she could understand. Moreover, she had full confidence in her own abilities.

Since Zhang Xiumei saw that she had said that, she didn't try to persuade Dr. Wang to stay any longer.

After Zhang Xiumei left, Feng Qingqing saw the old doctor still tidying up his herbs. Knowing that the old man truly cherished these things, she squatted down to help him tidy up as well.

The old doctor glanced at her in surprise but said nothing. The two of them silently sorted through the dried herbs for nearly forty minutes before finally categorizing and putting them away properly.

After standing up, Doctor Wang gave Feng Qingqing an appreciative look, but didn't say anything. He just nodded slightly and went inside.

Feng Qingqing also entered the brigade's clinic for the first time.

The clinic has only two rooms. The main room, which is the pharmacy and consultation room, is rectangular in shape. The back half of the room has a counter and a medicine shelf.

The medicine shelf was sparsely stocked with some medications, and the counter contained some commonly used gauze, cotton balls, stethoscopes, and other simple diagnostic tools; that was all.

There were two chairs in front of the counter and two against the wall for patients and their families to sit on.

Because there weren't many items and the presentation was simple, the old doctor didn't say much, just gave a brief introduction, and then let Feng Qingqing look at it herself. He went inside to pack his luggage.

Feng Qingqing carefully examined the medicine cabinet and found that although there were some medicine boxes on it, some of them were empty. After she finished organizing, she found that the clinic currently only had fever medicine, diarrhea medicine, anti-inflammatory medicine, a bottle of gentian violet for external injuries, and some simple tools, and that was it.

Seeing this situation, Feng Qingqing was both amused and exasperated.

Is there a severe shortage of medicine?

Just then, the senior doctor came in. Seeing Feng Qingqing's expression, he guessed that she probably already knew the truth about the clinic, and then sighed and said:

"The situation is the same across all the brigades; there's a shortage of medicine everywhere. We've applied to the commune hospital countless times, but they themselves are short of medicine too. And with so many brigades in need, even a tiny bit is difficult to distribute. Besides, the medicine currently on the shelf was obtained with great difficulty by our Lanshan brigade. You'd better use it sparingly, otherwise, once it's gone, who knows when we'll get more."

After speaking, he glanced at the girl, turned and went back inside. When he came out, he was carrying two books, which he placed on the counter. He said calmly:

"I think you're a good young lady. Here are two books. Take a good look at them and study them carefully. They might be of some help to you, especially the book on herbs."

He paused, then continued unhurriedly:

"The herbs in my yard are all collected by me from the nearby mountains. When you have time, you can also collect some, prepare them, and mix them into medicine. If any team members need them, you can charge a small fee for your hard work, but not too much. After all, we are all from the same village and it's not easy for anyone."

After saying that, he seemed to remember something, his face darkened, he waved to Feng Qingqing, said nothing more, and left.

Feng Qingqing was deeply grateful for her guidance, knowing that she was a kind-hearted old woman. She also looked at the two books that Dr. Wang had taken out: one was "Complete Collection of Chinese Herbal Medicine" and the other was "Records of Medical Practice".

Feng Qingqing glanced through them briefly, knowing it was the old man's thoughtful gift and that they were all good things. She carefully put them away in the cabinet.

Feng Qingqing found another rag and wiped the main room inside and out. By the time she finished, it was almost noon.

Since it was the first day and Dr. Wang was still there, Feng Qingqing had to go back for lunch. After saying goodbye to the doctor, she returned to the educated youth compound.

Along the way, the team members learned that Feng, the strong and efficient educated youth, had become the brigade's medic. When they saw her coming out of the clinic, they all greeted her warmly.

She returned to the educated youth settlement and saw that Hu Fangming had already come back and started cooking. Before she could even sit down, she saw Hu Fangming sneak up to her side like a thief, glancing around suspiciously.
