Chapter 1 The Unluckiest Time Traveler in History
Lan Zhi felt that she was the unluckiest time traveler in history.
As a medical doctor from the 28th century, she not only transmigrated into the body of a dead person, but was also sold by an old woman to a deaf, lame, and mute vegetative person as his wife.
The original owner, Ling Lanzhi, was taken home by her six-year-old brother, Ling Xiaowei, seventeen years ago. Only after much persuasion from him did the eldest son of the Ling family and the Cui family agree to keep her.
Her younger sister, Ling Lanhua, was born two years after she came to the family. From then on, there was one more person in the family who used her as a punching bag.
From the time the original owner could walk, Cui made her live in the woodshed, and every day she had to chop firewood, start a fire, cook, and cut pig feed for the family.
Not only that, every time her family sat down to eat, she could only sit to the side and wait for the Ling family to finish eating before she could sit down and eat some leftovers.
At first, Ling Jiawei strongly opposed his parents' actions, but every time he objected, Cui would beat and scold Ling Lanzhi behind her back.
Helpless, Ling Jiawei could only secretly bring her food every night, which is how she has managed to survive until now.
Last month, her brother went to the capital to take the imperial examination, and he won't be back for another six months. With her supporter gone, her life at home has become even more difficult.
Just yesterday, the original owner overheard matchmaker Aunt Wang and Cui talking about a family surnamed Mo in Kangzhuang Village who were willing to spend two hundred taels of silver to find a wife for their disabled son, and that they were in a hurry and the wedding had to be held the next day.
Two hundred taels! Cui had never seen so much silver in her life, and she nodded in agreement without hesitation.
Ling Lanzhi felt that since the other family was well-off, even if the man was disabled, marrying into the family would be better than not having enough to eat or wear in the Ling family. She did not object, nor did she have the right to object, because Cui Shi had not consulted her at all, but only informed her that she was getting married the next day.
That evening, as she passed by the door of Cui Shi and Ling Laoda's room, she overheard them whispering that the man she was to marry the next day not only had a leg ailment but was also deaf and mute. He was bedridden all day, doing nothing but eating and sleeping, and was no different from a living dead.
Upon hearing the news, she didn't sleep a wink all night, tossing and turning as she recalled her tragic experiences over the past seventeen years.
If she has to live the rest of her life in such misery as these seventeen years, it would be better for her to die.
So, before dawn, she went to town to buy arsenic. When the other party's donkey cart arrived, she locked the door, ruthlessly drank it, and hastily ended her life.
Ling Laoda and Cui Shi, who had raised her for seventeen years, showed no remorse for her death. In order not to return the betrothal gifts, they even carried her body onto a car.
They gave the driver, Old Wu, some silver and lied that she was just being temperamental and had taken some sleeping pills, and that she would wake up when they arrived at the man's house.
But as Old Wu drove the donkey cart, raising his whip and whistling, leisurely moving forward, a large mound of earth suddenly appeared in front of him. Seeing the donkey rushing towards the mound, Old Wu was caught off guard and quickly pulled the reins tight. The cart lurched, and with a loud crash, the bride tumbled off the cart.
"Shut up!"
Old Wu was so frightened that he stopped the donkey cart and ran to the back of the cart. Just as he was about to ask the bride if she was injured, he discovered that the red veil on her face had fallen off, revealing only a bloodless face.
"what!"
Seeing her stiff body and her deathly pale face, Old Wu was so frightened that he sat down on the ground.
"This this……"
He crawled over, trembling, to check her breath, then with a 'whoosh,' pulled his finger back, muttering to himself as if his tongue were tied in knots.
"Dead...dead, dead, how did he die? This...this has nothing to do with me, I...I don't know."
As he spoke, he scrambled up, grabbed his donkey cart, and ran away as if fleeing for his life.
"Click..."
The sky, which had just been clear, was suddenly struck by a muffled clap of thunder. Immediately afterward, Dr. Lan Zhi, a medical doctor living in the 28th century, transmigrated into the body of the original owner, Ling Lan Zhi.
Upon receiving this information, Lan Zhi breathed a sigh of relief, sat up straight, looked up at the sky, and let out a mournful cry.
"God, my experiment was only halfway done, and my robot was about to completely replace humans and perform all kinds of surgeries on patients. Why did you make me travel through time at this moment? And why did you make me marry a lame, deaf, and mute man? I'm so unlucky. I want to go back. I want my robot."
As soon as she finished speaking, the things in her laboratory began to fall from the sky with a 'crashing' sound, landing directly in front of her.
Just as she was stunned, her unfinished robot appeared before her.
"Master, I am Xiaoxin. I have brought you everything you requested. Do you have any further instructions?"
Lan Zhi blinked hard a few times, looking at Xiao Xin with disbelief.
"Xiao Xin, you also traveled through time with me?"
Xiao Xin's eyes suddenly flickered a few times.
"Someone is approaching, master be careful."
As soon as she finished speaking, Xiao Xin raised her arm, and all the medical instruments that had just fallen to the ground were put into her stomach. Then, she shrank her neck and instantly transformed into a Xiao Xin necklace.
Lan Zhi didn't have time to think much before putting the necklace on. Just then, she saw Old Wu driving his donkey cart, clattering over.
She got up, picked up the red veil that had fallen to the ground, and went to greet Old Wu's donkey cart.
When Old Wu saw her, his hand, which had been raising the whip, froze in mid-air, his eyes widened like copper bells, and his tongue became stiff.
"W-w-w...you...you're not dead?"
Lan Zhi frowned slightly, looked up and smiled bitterly.
"I'm standing right here, a perfectly healthy person, how could you curse me to die? I haven't even settled accounts with you yet, why did you abandon me halfway through the journey?"
The old woman, who had been sitting in a daze on the cart, trembled as she got off the cart, came to her, looked her up and down, and secretly wiped away her tears.
After a long pause, she choked up and said:
"Child, I heard you didn't want to get into the bridal sedan chair this morning... Please don't do anything rash. If you really don't want to marry my son, then... go back!"
"Why go back? You've already paid my aunt two hundred taels of silver as a betrothal gift. If I go back now, I won't get your silver back."
The old woman sighed deeply and shook her head.
"My son is unfortunate; how could he possibly keep such a beautiful young woman like you by his side! Fine, money is just an external thing; if you won't return it, then so be it!"
Lan Zhi was stunned. This old woman actually wanted to throw away two hundred taels of silver?
She stepped forward and stopped the old woman, asking, "Auntie, are you from Mo Ning?"
"I'm his mother. If you'd like, you can just call me Aunt Mo."
“Aunt Mo, that’s my mother-in-law. My aunt accepted your family’s betrothal gifts, and I got into your family’s bridal sedan chair. No matter what kind of person Mo Ning is, I will be his wife from now on. Let’s go home.”
Her words left Old Lady Mo momentarily unsure whether she was dreaming or in reality.
Old Wu, still in a panic, quickly pulled her aside and whispered a reminder.
"Young lady, it's true that she was so unwilling to get on my donkey cart this morning, she was practically dying. I think I was right when I saw that she had stopped breathing, but then she suddenly came back to life, like a completely different person. Could she have been possessed by a ghost?"
