Dapeng's Time Travel Life
Chapter 54 Court Turmoil and Border Crisis
Inside the border camp, the atmosphere was so heavy it was almost suffocating. The flickering candlelight reflected Zhang Peng's furrowed brow and Li Ming's indignant expression. The news of the impeachment was like a boulder, stirring up huge waves on a calm lake, making their already heavy guard duty even more difficult.
"General, these people are distorting the truth, we can't just sit here and wait to die!" Li Ming slammed his hand on the table, making the candlesticks on it shake.
Zhang Peng slowly rose and paced around the tent, each step firm and powerful, as if he were assessing the predicament before him. "Don't rush, let's analyze the situation first. They dare to impeach us at this time, probably because they know we are on the border and cannot prove our innocence in time. They are trying to use this to disrupt morale and weaken our strength."
Zhang Peng's mind raced. On one hand, there was the stability of the border; on the other, the doubts raised at court. He had to find a way out of this dilemma. He knew that if he rashly returned to court to defend himself, it would not only create loopholes in the border defenses but might also play right into the enemy's hands. However, if he did not respond, and the charges against him were proven true, all the efforts he and his soldiers had made would be in vain.
After pondering for a long time, Zhang Peng stopped and a determined look flashed in his eyes: "Li Ming, you immediately compile detailed accounts of border trade over the past few years, copies of agreements signed with various tribes, and records of our military achievements in resisting foreign enemies. Make sure they are detailed and accurate."
Although Li Ming was somewhat puzzled, he quickly accepted the order: "Yes, General, I'll take care of it right away. But what does this have to do with dealing with the impeachment?"
Zhang Peng's gaze was deep as he looked out at the dark night sky outside the tent, as if he could see through thousands of miles and witness the changing winds in the imperial court: "We cannot go back, but the evidence can. I will write a memorial to present the true situation at the border, the importance of trade cooperation, and the sinister intentions of those who impeached me to the Emperor. With this evidence, the Emperor will surely see the truth clearly."
While Li Ming was busy organizing the materials, Zhang Peng was writing furiously at his desk, producing thousands of words that clearly and systematically documented every battle on the border, every trade transaction, and the various conspiracies of foreign forces in his memorial. His writing was not only a defense of himself but also a profound analysis of the border situation, with every word filled with deep affection for this land and its people.
After the memorial was written, Zhang Peng selected his most capable messenger and repeatedly instructed him: "You must personally deliver this letter to the Emperor. There must be no slackness on the way. If there is any delay, you will be punished according to military law!"
The messenger departed, the sound of his horse's hooves fading into the night. Zhang Peng gazed in the direction he left, silently praying that this memorial would be like a sharp sword, piercing through the gloom in the court.
However, one problem after another arose. The day after the messenger set off, urgent military news came from the border: taking advantage of the distraction caused by the impeachment of Zhang Peng and others, foreign forces had once again amassed their troops and were poised to launch a large-scale invasion.
"General, the foreign forces are going too far! They definitely want to take advantage of our predicament and launch an attack." Li Ming was extremely anxious, his riding whip lashing incessantly against his boots.
Zhang Peng's expression was stern. He knew that he had to remain calm at this moment, as any panic could lead to complete defeat. "Pass down the order: the entire army is on high alert, patrols are being intensified, and enemy movements are being closely monitored."
While deploying troops and strengthening defensive fortifications, Zhang Peng pondered countermeasures. He knew that simple defense could only temporarily hold off the enemy; to completely resolve the crisis, he had to take the initiative and disrupt the enemy's plans.
"Li Ming, we cannot afford to be passively attacked. Select an elite cavalry force and, at dawn tomorrow, launch a surprise attack on their vanguard camp before they have established a firm foothold. Remember, a swift and decisive victory is essential; do not linger in battle."
A glint of excitement flashed in Li Ming's eyes. He had long been looking forward to teaching the enemy a lesson: "Yes, General, I guarantee I will complete the mission!"
Before dawn, Li Ming led his elite cavalry, charging towards the enemy's vanguard camp like a black torrent. The thunderous sound of hooves shattered the morning silence, catching the enemy off guard and plunging their camp into chaos.
Li Ming took the lead, brandishing his long sword and charging left and right through the enemy ranks. Wherever he went, enemy soldiers fell one after another. The soldiers were encouraged and their morale soared, and they engaged in fierce fighting with the enemy.
After a fierce battle, Li Ming and his men successfully destroyed the enemy's vanguard camp, killing countless enemies, before quickly retreating. This surprise attack not only dealt a blow to the enemy's morale but also bought Zhang Peng more time to deploy defenses.
However, Zhang Peng knew that this was only a temporary victory, and a greater crisis was yet to come. While awaiting a response from the imperial court, he prepared to face an even fiercer attack from foreign forces. Amidst these numerous difficulties, he stood firm like a pine tree, guarding the peace of the border.
