Dapeng's Time Travel Life

Chapter 31: The Flames of War Die, Peace Reborn

The wind at the border, carrying sand and gravel, swept across the tense faces of the soldiers. A great battle was imminent; the flags on the city walls fluttered in the wind, as if cheering on the impending fierce fight. Zhang Peng stood atop the city wall, overlooking the entire border region. The fortifications were well-organized, and the soldiers stood ready for battle, yet a sense of unease lingered in his heart. Letters from the capital cast a shadow over the region, and he knew that amidst internal and external troubles, this battle could only succeed; failure was not an option.

"General, all units are in position, waiting for the enemy to attack." Li Ming strode forward, his voice steady, but his eyes betrayed his tension.

Zhang Peng nodded slightly, his gaze firm: "Pass down the order: be vigilant and obey commands. As long as we work together, we will surely defeat the enemy."

As dawn broke, the enemy forces surged forth like a tidal wave, their horses' hooves shaking the earth. Leading them was the enemy general, surrounded by a group of strangely dressed men—presumably the mercenaries. Their eyes gleamed with greed and ferocity, like a pack of wolves about to pounce.

"Fire!" Zhang Peng commanded, and a volley of arrows rained down from the city walls upon the enemy. The enemy quickly raised their shields, forming a solid defensive line, and continued their steady advance.

"Catapults, prepare!" With Zhang Peng's command, the massive catapults were slowly pulled, and boulders roared out like cannonballs, crashing into the enemy ranks. Instantly, screams filled the enemy ranks as many soldiers were struck by the boulders, their flesh and blood flying everywhere.

But the enemy did not retreat; braving boulders and arrows, they rapidly approached the city walls. The mercenaries led the charge, their sharp weapons and unpredictable tactics putting immense pressure on the defenders on the walls.

"General, the mercenaries' offensive is too fierce, and our defenses are under strain!" a soldier shouted anxiously.

Zhang Peng frowned. He knew they couldn't continue on this passive defensive posture. "Proceed according to plan! Flanking forces, attack!"

At Zhang Peng's command, the troops hidden on the flanks charged towards the enemy like tigers emerging from the mountains. Their attack from the side disrupted the enemy's offensive rhythm. Seeing this, the enemy commander hurriedly diverted some of his forces to deal with the flank attack.

Just then, Zhang Peng noticed a commotion in the enemy's rear. It turned out that the harassment troops he had sent out earlier had successfully attacked the enemy's supply lines, causing chaos in the enemy's rear.

"The time has come! Suicide squad, follow me out of the city to kill the enemy!" Zhang Peng, holding a long spear, took the lead and led the suicide squad to open the city gate and charge towards the enemy.

At the city gate, a fierce hand-to-hand combat ensued. Zhang Peng's marksmanship was divine; every strike was precise and ruthless, and enemy soldiers fell one after another before him. Encouraged, the soldiers' morale soared, and they fought a desperate battle against the enemy.

Meanwhile, reinforcements from neighboring tribes arrived just in time. They outflanked the enemy from the rear, forming an encirclement with Zhang Peng's troops. Caught between two attacks, the enemy's formation crumbled, and soldiers began to flee in all directions.

Seeing that the situation was hopeless, the enemy general attempted to break through and escape. Zhang Peng, however, would not let him go. He spurred his horse and gave chase, thrusting his spear straight at the enemy general. The enemy general hastily raised his sword to parry, and with a clang, sparks flew. The two exchanged blows, engaging in a fierce battle.

After a fierce battle, Zhang Peng finally seized an opportunity and thrust his spear into the chest of the enemy general. The enemy general screamed and fell to the ground. Defeated, the enemy troops completely collapsed and knelt down to surrender.

On the battlefield, the smoke gradually dissipated, and the setting sun, like blood, bathed the ravaged land. Zhang Peng gazed at the scene before him, his heart filled with mixed emotions. This victory had not come easily; it was bought with the blood and lives of countless soldiers.

After cleaning up the battlefield, Zhang Peng led his troops back to the border. The city's inhabitants lined the streets to welcome them, cheering and jumping for joy; their faces beamed with the happiness of surviving a calamity. Looking at the smiles of the people, Zhang Peng felt a deep sense of satisfaction.

However, he knew that although the war was temporarily over, the peace of the border still needed to be protected for a long time. After returning to his camp, Zhang Peng immediately summoned his generals to discuss post-war defense and reconstruction plans.

"Although we repelled the enemy this time, we cannot let our guard down. We must continue to strengthen border defenses, and at the same time, help the people rebuild their homes and resume production," Zhang Peng said.

The generals nodded in agreement. Li Ming said, "General, we can also establish closer alliances with the surrounding tribes to jointly protect the border."

Zhang Peng nodded slightly: "That's a good suggestion. In addition, we should report the details of this battle to the imperial court and request its support."

After the meeting, Zhang Peng walked out of the tent alone. Gazing at the bright moon in the night sky, he thought of Xia Lijuan, who was far away in the capital. He knew that the war was finally over, and he could finally go home.
