Chapter 29 The Decisive Battle
Chapter 29: The Decisive Battle
As dawn broke and the chilly morning mist lingered, three armies, like three long-dormant dragons, surged swiftly towards the enemy camp across the border plains. Zhang Peng, riding a lithe black horse, led the charge, at the very forefront of the raid on the supply train. His eyes, sharp as an eagle's, were constantly alert to any movement around him, and the long spear he gripped gleamed coldly in the dim light, as if foreshadowing the impending battle.
"General, the enemy's supply camp is just ahead. According to reconnaissance, the defending force is about three hundred men, and they have set up watchtowers and barricades." A scout rushed over and reported to Zhang Peng in a low voice.
Zhang Peng nodded slightly, his gaze sweeping over the soldiers around him. Their expressions were solemn, yet filled with a resolute determination to die for their cause. "Brothers," he said, "this mission is crucial to the overall situation. We must act swiftly and decisively. Once we're inside, kill everyone we see, burn every grain we find, and don't linger!" His voice was deep yet powerful, echoing through the ranks like a resounding bell.
When they were about 100 meters away from the enemy camp, Zhang Peng suddenly waved his hand and shouted, "Charge!" In an instant, the sound of hooves thundered, and the soldiers rushed towards the enemy camp like tigers descending a mountain.
The sentries on the enemy watchtower spotted them and immediately rang the alarm. "Enemy attack! Enemy attack!" The piercing alarm shattered the morning tranquility, and the camp was instantly thrown into chaos.
Zhang Peng charged ahead, his spear thrusting repeatedly. Before two enemy sentries could react, they fell in pools of blood. He led his men to quickly break through the barricades and storm the camp.
Inside the camp, enemy soldiers hastily picked up their weapons to resist, but their resistance proved weak and feeble against the ferocious raiding force. Zhang Peng's marksmanship was sharp; each shot accurately struck the enemy's vitals, and wherever he went, enemy soldiers fell one after another.
"Quickly, light the fire!" Zhang Peng shouted as he fought. The soldiers quickly dispersed, throwing torches at the mountain of grain. Instantly, flames soared into the sky, thick smoke billowed, and the scorching flames rapidly devoured the grain.
Meanwhile, the troops feigning an attack on the front also clashed with the enemy's main force. Li Ming brandished his broadsword, leading his soldiers in a shouting charge towards the enemy. In an instant, the shouts of battle and the clash of weapons mingled together, deafeningly loud. The enemy, thinking this was a main offensive, hurriedly mobilized heavy troops for defense, unaware that their flanks and rear were already in danger.
Taking advantage of the enemy's main force being distracted, the flanking troops successfully circled around to the enemy's rear. Like divine intervention, they swiftly broke through the enemy's weak defenses, creating a pincer attack on the enemy.
The enemy forces were thrown into chaos, and soldiers began to scatter in all directions. However, the enemy commander was experienced, and he quickly organized an elite force to try to recapture the supply camp and turn the tide of the battle.
Zhang Peng noticed the enemy's movements. He knew that as long as the supply camp was held, the battle would be mostly won. "Brothers, the enemy is counterattacking! Hold the line!" he shouted, regrouping his soldiers to prepare for the enemy's attack.
The enemy's elite troops surged forward like a tide, and Zhang Peng led his soldiers in a tenacious resistance. A fierce hand-to-hand battle ensued, swords flashing and blood staining the ground. Zhang Peng's arm was slashed by the enemy, but he was oblivious and continued fighting with all his might.
"General, we can't hold out much longer!" a soldier shouted anxiously.
Zhang Peng looked around and saw that the enemy forces were increasing in number, and his own soldiers were suffering increasing casualties. Just at this critical moment, he suddenly heard a familiar battle cry. It turned out that the troops that had launched the feint attack from the front and the troops that had flanked the enemy had arrived in time, forming an encirclement around the enemy.
"Kill!" Zhang Peng roared, leading his soldiers in another charge. Under the attack from three sides, the enemy finally collapsed completely, and the soldiers knelt down and surrendered.
Zhang Peng watched as the smoke from the battlefield gradually dissipated and breathed a long sigh of relief. They had paid a heavy price in this battle, but had finally achieved victory. Looking at the distant border walls, he was filled with emotion; it was their homeland, which they had protected, and now, for the time being, it was safe.
After cleaning up the battlefield, Zhang Peng led his troops back to the border. Upon hearing the news of the victory, the people of the city surged into the streets, cheering and celebrating the return of their hero. Zhang Peng rode his horse slowly through the streets, his heart filled with satisfaction as he looked at the smiles on the faces of the people.
However, he knew that the war was not completely over. Although the enemy had suffered a major defeat, remnants of their forces remained, and the peace of the border still needed their continued protection. Upon returning to his camp, Zhang Peng immediately summoned his generals to discuss the next steps in the defense plan.
"Although we have won a great victory this time, the enemy will not give up. We must strengthen the border defenses to prevent the enemy from invading again," Zhang Peng said.
The generals nodded in agreement. Li Ming said, "General, we can set up more beacon towers around the border and strengthen patrols so that we can issue timely warnings once we detect enemy movements."
Zhang Peng nodded slightly: "That's a good suggestion. In addition, we should maintain close contact with the surrounding tribes and defend together."
After the meeting, Zhang Peng walked out of the tent alone. Gazing at the bright moon in the night sky, he thought of Xia Lijuan, who was far away in the capital. He knew that this war might never truly end, but for the peace of the nation and to reunite with Xia Lijuan as soon as possible, he would continue to stand guard on this land, protecting the border and the people.
