Chapter 27 The Battle at Dawn

Chapter 27: The Battle at Dawn

As dawn broke, before the morning light had fully dispelled the gloom of night, a suffocating atmosphere of tension already permeated the border city walls. Zhang Peng, clad in heavy armor, stood tall and straight as a pine tree atop the wall, his gaze piercing as he fixed intently on the enemy camp in the distance. Beside him, his soldiers stood ready, weapons gripped tightly, their faces etched with resolve and determination. Each of them knew that today's battle would determine the life or death of the border.

"General, there's movement in the enemy camp!" a soldier shouted, pointing into the distance.

Zhang Peng stared intently and saw countless figures emerging from the enemy camp, torches flickering and illuminating their ferocious faces. War drums thundered, their sound shaking the surrounding fields, and the enemy troops surged towards the city walls like a tidal wave. Among them, several heavily protected siege engines stood out, presumably concealing a new type of gunpowder.

"Prepare for battle!" Zhang Peng shouted, raising his arm, his voice echoing across the city wall.

On the city wall, the soldiers quickly took their positions, the archers nocked their bows, and their eyes were fixed on the enemy. When the enemy came within range, Zhang Peng decisively ordered: "Fire!"

A volley of arrows rained down on the enemy. The enemy soldiers raised their shields to defend themselves, and although many fell to the ground after being hit by arrows, their offensive did not falter, and they quickly advanced to the city walls.

The massive battering ram pounded against the city gate, producing a dull, resounding sound that made the walls tremble with each impact. At the same time, enemy troops began scaling the walls using siege ladders, and a fierce battle ensued.

"Throw rolling logs and stones!" Zhang Peng shouted the order.

The soldiers struggled to push logs and boulders off the city wall, hurling them at the enemy. The enemy screamed in agony, their assault stalled. But the enemy quickly adjusted their strategy: some soldiers continued their assault, while others provided cover for the siege engines as they approached the wall.

As the siege engine drew ever closer, Zhang Peng's heart pounded in his chest. At this critical moment, the defensive shields developed by Chen Feng proved invaluable. The soldiers maneuvered the shields, aiming them towards the siege engine.

With a deafening roar, the enemy launched a new type of gunpowder. Flames shot into the sky, and shockwaves rolled in. However, the shields successfully dispersed the impact of the gunpowder, and although the city walls trembled, they were not substantially damaged.

"Well done!" Zhang Peng shouted, and the soldiers' morale soared.

However, the enemy did not give up. They continued to fire gunpowder, attempting to break through the defenses. Zhang Peng directed his soldiers in defense while searching for an opportunity to counterattack.

Suddenly, he noticed a commotion on the flank of the enemy's siege force. It turned out that a suicide squad had launched a surprise attack amidst the chaos, moving like ghosts through the enemy ranks towards their gunpowder storage point.

"Brothers, charge with me!" Upon seeing this, Zhang Peng immediately led his elite troops, opened the city gates, and charged towards the enemy.

The city gates swung open, and the soldiers charged towards the enemy like tigers descending a mountain. Zhang Peng led the charge, his spear flashing coldly, and wherever he went, enemy soldiers fell. Encouraged, the soldiers' morale soared, and they engaged in a fierce battle with the enemy.

The suicide squad fought bravely behind enemy lines and successfully located the enemy's gunpowder storage point. They ignited the gunpowder, and instantly, flames soared into the sky, followed by a deafening explosion. The enemy's gunpowder reserves were destroyed, and their ranks were thrown into chaos.

"The enemy is in disarray, attack with all your might!" Zhang Peng seized the opportunity and shouted loudly.

Soldiers on the city wall rushed down to join the battle. The air was filled with the sounds of battle, and the enemy was forced into a crushing retreat.

Seeing the situation was dire, the enemy general attempted to organize a retreat. But Zhang Peng would not let this opportunity slip by; he led his soldiers in hot pursuit, giving the enemy no chance to catch their breath.

After a fierce battle, the enemy was finally completely defeated. The battlefield was filled with smoke, limbs and severed bodies lay scattered everywhere, and blood stained the earth. Zhang Peng watched the retreating enemy, let out a long sigh of relief, and his tense nerves finally relaxed.

They paid a heavy price in this battle, but ultimately won. Zhang Peng felt a mix of emotions. He knew that every fallen soldier had fought for the country and its people, and their sacrifice would be remembered forever.

Back in the city, the soldiers cheered and celebrated their hard-won victory. Zhang Peng, however, remained vigilant. He immediately organized his soldiers to clear the battlefield, treat the wounded, and at the same time, arranged for increased patrols to prevent another enemy attack.

As night fell, the city was brightly lit. Zhang Peng, in his tent, summoned his generals to discuss the next steps. Although they had repelled the enemy this time, the border situation remained tense, and they had to be fully prepared to meet new challenges.

"General, although we have won this battle, the enemy's strength remains. How should we deal with this?" a general asked.

Zhang Peng pondered for a moment and said, "On the one hand, we must strengthen border defenses and consolidate the defensive line; on the other hand, we must send people deep into the enemy's rear to gather intelligence and find their weaknesses. Only by knowing ourselves and our enemy can we win every battle."

The generals nodded in agreement. After the meeting, Zhang Peng walked out of the tent alone. Gazing at the city lights, he thought of Xia Lijuan, who was far away in the capital. He knew that this war might never end, but for the peace of the country and to reunite with Xia Lijuan as soon as possible, he would continue to defend the border and fight to the very end.
