Post-Apocalyptic Rebirth: The Ghost Guanyin Transforms into a God
Chapter 237 Office
The mornings in the North District were unexpectedly colder than elsewhere, perhaps because autumn was approaching, and the wind along the moat was particularly strong.
She said she wanted Xia Tang to sleep with her, but Miao Yin ran into the space in the middle of the night and didn't come out until the afternoon.
Peng Si did manage to prevent the patrolmen from reaching the moat, probably because he assigned them some other task, thus thwarting these patrols.
I thought I would have to wait a few days to get my ID card and be able to come and go freely, but to my surprise, Peng Si came to my door the very next afternoon.
Miao Yin sat on the steps leading down from the RV, listening to his explanation.
Besides Peng Si, he also had two soldiers with him, but he did not let the two men follow him forward, but left them outside.
He seemed more serious than yesterday: "I've already reported your case, and the approval process is much faster than I expected. The identities of the other people aren't a problem; I've classified them as newly arrived refugees. But yours and Tu Hao's are a bit more complicated because they're not in the personnel files."
As he spoke, he handed over a stack of identity cards. Miao Yin took them and flipped through them, her fingernails scraping along the fine lines on them.
The identification tags at the base are not ordinary cards; they contain hidden watermark technology and electronic chips to prevent desperate refugees from forging them and disrupting the market.
“I’ve also taken care of the blood test report. Now, you can leave with your identification tags.”
"So, you've come to find me?" Miao Yin asked, putting down her identity token.
"The higher-ups want to meet the people with special abilities who assisted in the rescue of Dongai Community."
"Your superior?"
"His surname is Lu, and we usually call him Old Lu."
Tu Hao, who had been listening to the conversation, leaned against the car and waited quietly for what would happen next.
Miao Yin narrowed her eyes and sized him up for a while. Only after confirming with a spell that the other party was not lying did she stand up: "Alright, but I should be able to manage on my own, right?"
“…Okay, let’s go.” Peng Si pointed to the car behind him with his palm up.
Half an hour later, the car stopped at Jiale Plaza in the central area. Miao Yin got out of the car, adjusted her sunglasses that had slipped down her face, and looked up at the buildings, which looked as if they had been bombed and were covered in scars.
Seeing her gaze linger, Peng Si explained, "This was left behind by the mutants when the base was first established."
"It seems safe now."
"There are special weapons for defense here. If you try to attack, the defenses will be activated automatically. All the doors also require special access cards to open. Stop looking around and come this way."
Peng Si led them toward the gate, showed his identification, the guard saluted, and then used a card to unlock the electronic lock.
Behind her sunglasses, Miao Yin's eyes watched silently, without uttering a word.
They entered the building and didn't encounter many people along the way. The few they did meet were in a hurry. The desk at the front desk was covered in dust and there were few documents left behind. Only two soldiers were guarding the area.
After navigating a corridor, the soldier next to Peng Si pressed the button for the upward elevator.
"Ding." The elevator doors opened, and Peng Si, standing at the front, pressed the button for the eighth floor.
The buttons above that had their casings removed and were sealed with tape.
No one spoke in the elevator; only the sound of the elevator gears turning could be heard.
"Ding."
The elevator doors opened, and the group followed Peng Si out. Compared to the desolation downstairs, the upstairs was clearly more vibrant with life. Several public officials walked by carrying documents, nodding when they saw them, but the dark circles under their eyes betrayed their exhaustion.
“That’s enough for now. I’ll take her to the rest.” Peng Si suddenly turned to the two soldiers and said.
"Yes, Lieutenant General." The two soldiers saluted and then left.
The empty corridor was now empty except for the two of them. Peng Si paused for a moment, and only after the two soldiers had completely left did he lead Miao Yin into the office.
The office was very tidy. All the documents were neatly stored in the glass cabinet, while some everyday items were placed on the other side. There was still some water left in the teacup, and two pens were stuck in the pen holder.
"This is my office. Please have a seat for a while. I'll go ask Mr. Lu for advice," Peng Si said to her.
"Leave me alone in such an important place? Captain Peng, you really trust me?" Miao Yin said after looking around.
"There's nothing here that can't be seen. The secrets have already been put away. Please wait a moment." With that, Peng Si left the office.
Miao Yin was left alone in the huge room.
"Is there anything I can't watch?"
Since the other party had said so, Miao Yin didn't mind sightseeing around.
So she didn't hesitate to rummage through everything, opening the other person's drawers and searching for documents.
Peng Si was right. This place seemed to have been cleared out, leaving nothing of value. What Miao Yin found were mostly early renovation plans and lists of public officials. These things were hardly confidential; they could be found sooner or later if one was willing to look for them.
Miao Yin aimlessly flipped through the other person's things, throwing out one document after another, scattering them haphazardly everywhere, until she saw a blank document without a cover.
Miao Yin paused in her throwing motion, then picked up the document, flipped to the first two blank pages, and on the third page, a dungeon renovation plan appeared.
"..."
She flipped through the pages one by one, and the entire underground city's overhead view was revealed.
After entering through the elevator, the interior is a maze of interconnected passages.
Medical storage area, weapons storage area, offices for high-ranking officials, escape routes, and...
The laboratory occupies most of the underground city area.
Scrolling down further reveals the duty roster and movement chart for personnel on duty in each area.
The guards' shift schedules, shift times, and even when to inspect the surveillance cameras—every timeline was clearly laid out on paper.
With Miao Yin's memory, once the paper is turned over, she won't forget it.
"..."
She pondered for a moment, closed the document, put it back in its place, and then covered it with other documents.
When Peng Si returned, she had her legs crossed on his desk and was leisurely flipping through a public servant record form.
The table was piled high with documents, the neatly arranged daily necessities had been overturned, and the floor was a complete mess.
Peng Si fell silent as he looked at the office, which looked like it had been robbed by bandits.
"Yo, you're back." The culprit casually tossed aside the booklet in his hand and greeted him.
"..."
Peng Si pressed his aching temple: "I remember I was only gone for twenty minutes."
"Yes, so, can I go now?" She shrugged, like a cat triumphantly showing off its spoils.
Peng Si sighed with his eyes closed, suddenly feeling that he must have committed some terrible sin in his past life: "...Come out."
