Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Wish Check-in Machine
Chapter 28 The Villainous Female Supporting Character in Immortal Cultivation (10)
Upon hearing Xia Mingwei's words, the "thief's" dry lips trembled slightly, as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he said nothing.
Even after Xia Mingwei had walked away, he didn't dare to reveal his true feelings: "If we weren't forced into this situation, who would be willing to take the risk and do this kind of work?" He also knew that no one would listen to him, and no one would want to listen to him.
After Xia Mingwei parted ways with the "thief," she couldn't help but feel overjoyed as she thought about how she had confronted the male and female leads earlier that day.
However, as the saying goes, nothing in this world is more likely to be a coincidence than a story.
Beside an alley, Xia Mingwei saw the "thief" again. To be more precise, she couldn't call him a "thief" anymore, because calling him a "beggar" wouldn't be an exaggeration.
He stood beside a steamed bun shop, his eyes fixed longingly on the steaming buns. He licked his lips, and an untimely sound escaped from his stomach. He knew it was the embarrassed sound of hunger.
Perhaps it was because his gaze was too direct, or perhaps it was because his attire was simply too repulsive.
The owner of the steamed bun shop then spoke up: "Go away, go away, go away! Where did this stinking beggar come from, standing here for no reason and delaying my business!"
Hearing this, he was not angry, but dragged his heavy and slow steps away.
Seeing this, Xia Mingwei suddenly remembered that she hadn't thought to give him any money when she left.
Xia Mingwei then quickly walked up to the steamed bun shop owner. Upon seeing the elegantly dressed Xia Mingwei, the shop owner immediately greeted her with a smile.
Seeing the boss's attitude, Xia Mingwei couldn't really blame him. After all, that's just how the world is—people fawn over the powerful and treat others differently based on their status; it's everywhere.
"Pack me two steamers of buns! Please hurry!" Xia Mingwei pointed at the buns in front of her, looking a little anxious, and said to the shopkeeper.
Upon hearing that a big business had arrived, the boss acted swiftly. Packing the buns, collecting the cash, and giving change were all done in one smooth motion.
The shopkeeper handed Xia Mingwei a steamed bun wrapped in brown paper, which she took and left.
She intended to chase after him and simply give the bun to the beggar. However, she saw the beggar turn and enter an alley, which piqued her curiosity.
She held her breath, quieted her footsteps, and followed.
Following the beggar through many twists and turns, they finally arrived at a house.
This might not even qualify as a household, as the house in front of you is simply pieced together from a few planks of wood. It looks rickety and seems ready to collapse at any moment; it lacks even the most basic features like doors and windows.
Xia Mingwei occasionally heard the voices of several children coming from inside, so she leaned closer to try and hear what they were saying.
Through the huge crack in the door, Xia Mingwei was able to see what was inside.
Several young children were gathered around the beggar, chattering away.
"Big brother, we all behaved well today! We didn't run off anywhere!"
"Well done! There are more people taking pictures of beggars lately, so you must be extra careful and don't go out easily!" The beggar gently pinched the nose of the child who had just spoken, his tone carrying a hint of praise.
The others were not to be outdone and began sharing their own experiences of the day.
After some time, one of the girls among the children looked at the beggar, seemingly sensing something, and asked, "Brother, did your trip go smoothly today?"
The beggar was taken aback, then patted his chest. "You still don't trust your older brother? With him on the case, he's worth two men!"
Seeing his confident demeanor, the girl finally breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed her brother was alright; she'd probably just been overthinking things!
"Big brother, what did you eat for lunch today when you went out to find work?" The child who asked the question had bright, sparkling eyes.
"Me? I ate a plump, soft meat bun! When you bite into it, the oil sizzles and it smells so good!" He smacked his lips as if savoring the taste of his lunch.
Several children surrounding him, hearing this, felt their mouths watering! They murmured, "Big brother is so amazing! He can get meat buns to eat just by going out to work! I want to be like big brother when I grow up!"
Hearing this, a bitter smile appeared on his lips, but he didn't contradict them. Why should he play the villain now? Destroying their hopes for the future was not something he wanted to do.
After some discussion, someone sighed, "If only we could have a meat bun right now!"
This statement resonated with everyone, and others couldn't help but start imagining it as well.
Hearing these words, Xia Mingwei felt a pang of sadness in her heart. What she took for granted might be the food these children dreamed of. She had never imagined that a meat bun could be associated with gourmet food!
Thinking of this, she could no longer resist and stepped forward to knock on the so-called "door".
Upon hearing the sound, the children immediately hid. The one in the lead was the beggar, so he stepped forward and lifted the tattered curtain.
He was somewhat surprised to see that the person who came was Xia Mingwei, wondering why she had come here.
Xia Mingwei ignored his expression and walked straight in.
"I'm the one who hired your eldest brother to do the work today. Because he did an exceptionally good job, the employer asked me to bring him some steamed buns as a reward!" With that, she shook the steamed buns in her hand.
In the silence, Xia Mingwei seemed to hear the sound of several children swallowing. However, they all remained polite, and none of them rashly stepped forward to ask for food.
Finally, one of the children couldn't hold back any longer and asked his older brother, "Big brother, is this true?"
Perhaps the expectation in the child's eyes was too obvious, making him unable to deny it.
He nodded with difficulty, "That's how it is!"
Upon hearing this, the other children couldn't help but cheer.
Seeing this, Xia Mingwei distributed the food. Each child received a portion, and after receiving the buns, they savored them with relish.
Xia Mingwei turned to look at the beggar, and seeing that he did not move, she picked up two buns and handed them to him.
"Could you come out for a moment? I need to talk to you about something!"
After saying that, Xia Mingwei and the beggar went outside. When she turned back again, she found that the beggar was already in tears.
Xia Mingwei was startled by the scene and didn't know how to handle it.
