After transmigrating, she became the most beloved beast in the world.

Chapter 39 The Origin of One Husband and One Wife

Three thousand years ago, the Ink Serpent tribe was extremely backward. Like other tribes at that time, because of the scarcity of females, the Ink Serpent tribe firmly believed that only with one female and many males could the tribe prosper.

The Ink Serpent tribe is not known for its physical strength; they make a living by hunting small wild animals and gathering herbs.

In the tribe lived a young man named Qi, 19 years old, whose rank was not high, only a sixth-tier yellow-level orc. However, Qi's fate took a dramatic turn during an ordinary herb-gathering trip. He rescued a young girl deep in the forest.

The girl had fair skin, was injured and had lost her memory, and had a black birthmark on her face that covered most of her beautiful face, so she did not attract the attention of her tribe at first.

And so, Qi took the girl home and cared for her tenderly. As time passed, the girl's injuries gradually healed, and a deep affection slowly grew between Qi and her. In that ancient era, budding feelings often blossomed quickly, and the two naturally became a couple. Shortly after their union, the girl laid a nest of snake eggs. The birth of so many newborns should have been a joyous occasion for the tribe, but unexpectedly, it became the beginning of disaster.

On the very day the snake eggs hatched, a young chieftain from a neighboring tribe came to the Ink Snake tribe to collect the annual medicinal herbs, as was customary. He happened to encounter a young girl carrying the baby snakes out to find Qi. In that instant, the young chieftain was deeply captivated, unable to tear himself away.

After a long period of testing and a comfortable life, the girl had long since let her guard down, washing away the birthmark on her face that she had used to cover it up, revealing her stunningly beautiful face.

The young clan leader was captivated by her beauty and that very night proposed marriage, intending for her to join his family.

For the people of the Ink Serpent tribe, this was an offer they could hardly refuse. They believed that with the addition of a powerful young chieftain, the tribe would gain unprecedented protection and resources.

As the first beast-beastman, Qi was filled with complex emotions, but he also understood what the young chieftain's arrival meant for the tribe. For the future of the tribe, for the girl and their offspring, he compromised.

However, his compromise angered the girl, who revealed her true identity to him when they became partners. She came from Earth, had received a modern education, and firmly believed that monogamy was the cornerstone of love and marriage.

She couldn't accept this arrangement that went against her beliefs; her views on love clashed sharply with the polygamous system of the Ink Serpent tribe. She couldn't accept being used as a bargaining chip, nor could she bear having her love shared. Her love was exclusive, and her heart belonged only to one person.

The girl's refusal enraged the young clan leader, who began to secretly plot to take her away from Qi. However, his plans were thwarted several times by Qi, who had already broken through to the seventh rank. The yellow-level beastman had actually become an orange-level beastman, and with the two red-level cubs in the nest of snake eggs, the girl's identity as a saintess could no longer be concealed.

However, the young clan leader used his power to conceal the truth. He was a seventh-tier red-level beastman. If he could advance to the eighth tier, he would be able to protect his family, the Ink Serpent tribe, and the girl and Qi, and ensure their survival on this continent.

Under pressure from her identity as a saintess being exposed, the girl finally made a difficult decision. She agreed to become the young clan leader's partner. A year later, the young clan leader successfully broke through to the eighth rank, but the girl died.

She died on the day of childbirth; it was her child with the young clan leader. The young clan leader's beast form was a rhinoceros, a fierce and powerful beast whose bloodline contained power far beyond what ordinary people could withstand. Even though it was just a cub, the girl suffered unimaginable pain.

The birthing process was extremely long, and the girl's moans echoed throughout the tribe, each sound like a sharp blade piercing Qi's heart. Watching basin after basin of bloody water being brought out, he was in immense pain.

The young clan leader remained motionless, his eyes devoid of their former pride, replaced by endless grief.

The girl suffered immense pain and died tragically, leaving behind a gold-level cub whose eyes had not yet opened.

In the very end, Qi abandoned everything, leaving only the words: "The Ink Serpent Clan practices monogamy," before burying himself with the girl.

"They were buried together, but how did Qi die?" Chu Xinyao was very confused. The High Priest was really not a good storyteller. She was completely bewildered and didn't even know how the male protagonist died.

The high priest's gaze fell on the sacred tree, then he turned to Chu Xinyao: "Your Majesty, Qi and that holy maiden have a very deep relationship. They have given birth to more than a dozen snake cubs, six of whom have red-rank aptitude. They are the foundation of our Ink Serpent Tribe's glorious thousand-year history."

Chu Xinyao frowned slightly. The High Priest still hadn't said how Qi died!

The high priest sighed, at Chu Xinyao's slowness of perception. His gaze drifted into the distance, as if he had traveled through time and returned to that ancient era.

"Qi died because of the saintess's death. When his people found him the next day, he had no injuries and was lying next to the saintess. He truly loved his partner. His people buried them together, and eventually a tree grew there—the sacred tree. Anyone who becomes a couple and drinks the sacred water is forbidden from mating with anyone else. This must be what the two of them hoped for: a love that would forever be faithful to each other."

Chu Xinyao looked at the sacred tree that the high priest had pointed to, lost in thought.

The high priest suddenly turned his head and looked at Chu Xinyao, saying, "Xiao Mo told me that you said to him, 'One love for life, one couple,' is that right?"

Chu Xinyao nodded.

That's really great!

“I think so too,” Chu Xinyao said with a smile.

"High Priest, this story isn't over yet! Can just six Red-level snake cubs really make the Ink Serpent Tribe powerful?" There seem to be quite a few Red-level orcs these days!

"Yes, the six red-level beings are just the foundation for our Ink Serpent Clan's rise to power. The one who truly determined our dominance was that purple-level beastman."

"That rhinoceros that lost its mother right after birth?"

"Yes, his name is Shi, the name of the deceased."

Chu Xinyao frowned. "Isn't his father still alive? Why would he give his child such an unlucky name, a name with a bad meaning?" Fearing the High Priest wouldn't understand what "unlucky" meant, she explained it again.

"When the clansmen brought the baby rhinoceros, born at the cost of the Holy Maiden's life, to the young clan leader, he merely glanced at it coldly, uttered the name, and left. From then on, no further news of that young clan leader was ever heard."

He was raised by the Ink Serpent tribe, protected his beast brothers and sisters, and led six red-level beast brothers to build the Ink Serpent tribe into the strongest tribe at that time.

Unfortunately, he never found a mate in his life, and no child with gold-level aptitude was ever born after the Ink Serpent Tribe. The High Priest looked at Chu Xinyao, a hope appearing in his eyes.

After a moment of reflection, Chu Xinyao was surprised to find that the area below the mountain had become quiet.

"ink!"
