Tian Tian hesitated, staring at the door, and remained motionless for a long time.
Knowing that she was wary, He Qiaoyun didn't insist. She carried the basin of water and clean clothes to the yard and said, "Anyway, no one's around right now. Let's change in the yard, okay?"
Tian Tian looked timid, her eyes still wary.
He Qiaoyun smiled gently, "Auntie lives here, but she hasn't been back for a long time. She's not a bad person. Look at these clothes, Auntie also has a daughter, and these are all her clothes."
Tian Tian stared at her for a long time before walking over.
He Qiaoyun carefully dried the ends of her hair that were wet with water, then tied it into a high ponytail. "Take off your clothes."
Tian Tian didn't move, and it took a long time before she finally took off her wet clothes.
He Qiaoyun wrung out the towel, looked up and saw that she was thin and covered with bruises. Her brows furrowed. "What happened to you?"
Tian Tian burst into tears.
"Did someone hit you? Who hit you so hard? Tell your aunt."
Tian Tian pursed her lips and remained silent, tears streaming down her beautiful eyes.
Since it wasn't her own child, He Qiaoyun had no choice but to wipe her body and change her into clean clothes and shoes.
After changing her clothes, the little girl had cried enough.
He Qiaoyun smiled when she saw that the clothes were a bit too big for her. "Just wear these for now. By the way, do you remember your parents' phone number? I'll contact them for you."
Tian Tian didn't answer, but pointed at her and said, "Auntie, you're wet too, go change your clothes."
He Qiaoyun then remembered that she hadn't changed her clothes either, and quickly got up. "Auntie will go change first. You stay downstairs and be good."
After she finished speaking, she went upstairs, changed her clothes, and came down. A group of people came to the courtyard; the village leaders had all arrived.
Just as He Qiaoyun was about to explain, Tian Tian rushed in front of her and turned to a soaking wet man, saying, "This auntie saved me."
The man walked up to her, his eyes full of gratitude. "Thank you for saving Tian Tian. My name is Feng Jiashu, and I am Tian Tian's guardian."
He Qiaoyun subconsciously sized up the man.
The man looked to be about the same age as her, with a handsome face, a tall and straight figure, and an air of heroism and nobility in his eyes. However, the smell of dirt and mud on his body greatly diminished his charm. Coupled with his sincere tone, he seemed to have a certain honesty.
"I was just passing by," He Qiaoyun said with a faint smile.
The village secretary patted his chest, looking still shaken. "When we went over there just now and saw the shoes floating on the water, our hearts were in our throats. Luckily, you saved them. Thank God."
Their village was shortlisted for the "Advanced Village" award. If someone were to die at this critical juncture, all the village officials would be doomed...
Several leaders echoed, "Yes, we need to hold a meeting when we get back, contact the school to emphasize this matter, and we also need to find someone else to patrol the reservoir. We can't let something like today happen again..."
He Qiaoyun patted Tian Tian's head and smiled gently, "Tian Tian, I'll go pack up your dirty clothes for you."
She noticed someone watching her out of the corner of her eye, and subconsciously looked up, catching Feng Jiashu's gaze.
She smiled at him generously, "You must be Tian Tian's father. I'll go get Tian Tian's dirty clothes, and you can take them back to wash."
Feng Jiashu nodded, "Thank you for your help."
"No trouble."
She went inside to look for her bag, and Tian Tian followed her in, trailing right behind her.
This puzzled her, so she squatted down and asked, "Tian Tian, why are you following me?" As if she had thought of something, she asked, "Is there something you want to say to Auntie?"
Tian Tian nodded, and He Qiaoyun's expression became serious. She thought Tian Tian was going to tell her about the scars on her body, but unexpectedly, she blurted out, "Auntie, can you come home with me?"
He Qiaoyun pressed further, "Why do you want me to go home with you?"
"I want you to be my mother."
He Qiaoyun sighed, "Tian Tian, Auntie can't be your mother. Auntie has her own life and family, but... if you have any difficulties, you can tell Auntie, and Auntie will try her best to help you, okay?"
Tian Tian stared at her without saying anything more, then turned and ran away.
He Qiaoyun shook her head helplessly, found a plastic bag, put Tian Tian's dirty clothes in it, and handed it to Feng Jiashu.
Feng Jiashu reached out and took it, saying, "I haven't even asked you your name yet."
“I am He Qiaoyun from Hejia Village,” she said.
Feng Jiashu pulled his phone out of his dirty pocket. "You saved Tian Tian, so I should reward you. Let's exchange contact information."
He Qiaoyun waved her hand and declined, saying, "No need, it's just a small favor."
Feng Jiashu didn't insist, but simply said thank you again.
The village secretary asked, "Qiaoyun, weren't you pruning branches in the greenhouse? Why did you suddenly run off to the reservoir?"
He Qiaoyun said, "I originally went to find someone to prune my branches, but I couldn't find anyone. I just wandered around and ended up at the reservoir. Maybe I'm destined to meet Tian Tian."
Feng Jiashu turned his head and looked at He Qiaoyun. He couldn't help but look at her a few more times before looking away.
A village official walked up to the village secretary and whispered something in his ear. The village secretary immediately frowned and scolded, "This He Ping, a grown man, is so petty. You wait, I'll find someone to prune the branches for you."
He Qiaoyun smiled, "Thank you for your trouble, Secretary."
"It's not a big deal."
They dispersed one by one, and He Qiaoyun watched Feng Jiashu and Tian Tian's retreating figures, lost in thought.
Feng Jiashu doesn't seem like the type to hit Tian Tian at all... What happened to those injuries...? But then again, maybe he really did do it...
"Forget it, everyone has their own fate. This isn't my business. My five-thousand-yuan wool coat..."
He Qiaoyun regretted not asking Feng Jiashu for payment for her boasting earlier.
It cost five thousand yuan, and I only wore it once. Now it's covered in all sorts of mud stains. I wonder how much it will cost to dry clean it.
She sighed helplessly, thinking that she would take it to a dry cleaner when she got back to the city.
