A Fantasy Love Story Across the Warring States Period
Chapter 145 Mysterious Valley and Unpredictable Future
The unfamiliar valley was shrouded in a light mist, drifting like a veil, sometimes gathering, sometimes dispersing. Through the mist, one could vaguely see towering peaks rising into the clouds on either side of the valley, their outlines appearing and disappearing like silent, majestic beasts guarding the valley, exuding an aura of mystery and authority. Various strangely shaped plants grew in the valley; some vines twisted and climbed the ground like cunning snakes poised to strike; others had enormous flowers that emitted an eerie, dark light, their petals trembling slightly, as if possessing their own consciousness. The ground beneath one's feet also seemed strange, soft to the touch, occasionally emitting wisps of mist, as if the earth itself were breathing.
Huanmo cautiously surveyed her surroundings, her grip on her sword still tight. Although the eerie blue light had saved them from the giant beast's threat, the sudden arrival in this unfamiliar valley made her heart pound. "This place looks strange. I wonder what the crystal's purpose was in bringing us here. It's hard to say whether it's a blessing or a curse." She frowned, her eyes filled with caution. She knew that in such a bizarre place, a slight misstep could lead to utter destruction, but since she was already here, she had no choice but to bite the bullet and explore.
Wanru followed behind Huanmo, the jade flute in her hand twirling occasionally. He, too, was filled with doubt and unease. "I thought that once we dealt with that giant beast, we could continue our journey towards the source of the evil spirit's destiny. I never expected to be dragged into such a strange place. These strange plants don't look like friendly creatures. I'd better be careful." He muttered to himself, fine beads of sweat appearing on his forehead. His eyes constantly scanned the strange plants, trying to detect any potential dangers.
Ling'er looked around curiously, her big eyes full of wonder, but her little hands still gripped the book tightly. "Wow, the flowers and plants here are so special, but they feel a little scary. Grandpa said that the stranger something is, the more careful you should be, so I have to remember that." As she spoke, she moved closer to Huanmo, her little body trembling slightly. She was both afraid and unable to suppress her curiosity, hoping to find a way to leave this place quickly so she could continue to complete their mission.
The woman in white walked at the back, her guqin clutched to her chest, her fingers lightly resting on the strings, ready to respond to any unexpected situation. She frowned slightly, her gaze sweeping over the valley's surroundings with a deep intensity, silently pondering, "This valley must be connected to that forbidden area in some way, perhaps holding the key clues to our search for the source of the evil spirit's destiny. However, all of this is hidden beneath layers of mist and strange appearances, requiring us to explore carefully."
The group cautiously made their way along the valley. Suddenly, the sound of flowing water came from ahead, remarkably clear in the silent valley, as if beckoning them. Following the sound, they came upon a clear stream with an unusual luster. The water shimmered with iridescent colors under the sunlight, a beautiful sight, yet tinged with an inexplicable eeriness.
Huanmo crouched down, reaching out to touch the stream, but hesitated just before she touched it. She thought, "This stream looks beautiful, but this place is eerie. What if there's something wrong with the water?" Just as she hesitated, a rock by the stream suddenly moved. Huanmo was startled and quickly stood up, taking a few steps back. Looking closely, she saw a monster resembling a turtle but with sharp claws and a long tail. It was staring at them warily with eyes the size of mung beans.
Seeing this, Wanru raised her jade flute, adopted a defensive stance, and said, "What is this thing? It looks dangerous. Everyone be careful."
Ling'er hid behind Huanmo, peeking out her little head to look at the monster, and whispered, "It's so ugly, will it bite us?"
The woman in white took a small step forward and said softly, "Don't make any rash moves yet. Let's see what it's going to do."
The monster stared at the group for a while, then spoke in human language: "How did you outsiders manage to trespass into this place? This valley is not a place you can set foot in at will." Its voice was hoarse and deep, exuding an unquestionable majesty.
Huanmo paused for a moment, then clasped his hands in a salute and said, "We originally came here by chance in order to find the source of the evil spirit and eliminate the calamities of the world. We hope that you can tell us about the situation of this valley and point out the way out for us."
The monster sneered, "Hmph, searching for the source of the evil spirit's life? That's not something you can accomplish. This valley hides many secrets, and every place is full of danger. If you insist on going forward, you may never return."
Wanru frowned and said, "Even so, we cannot back down. This concerns the lives of all people. Please help us, even if it's just a hint."
The monster looked at everyone, seemingly deep in thought. After a moment, it slowly said, "If you want to leave this place, you have to follow this stream. However, you will encounter three checkpoints along the way, each extremely dangerous. If you can overcome them, you might find a way out. As for the source of the evil spirit, well, you'll find out when the time comes."
Hearing this, everyone felt heavy-hearted, but a glimmer of hope also ignited within them. Huanmo said firmly, "Thank you for informing us, Your Excellency. We will do our utmost."
After bidding farewell to the monster, the group continued along the stream. Not far ahead, they saw a huge net bridge made of intertwined vines. The net bridge spanned the stream and led deeper into the valley, but it looked precarious, with sharp thorns growing on some of the vines, as if warning them not to approach.
Huanmo looked at the net bridge and thought to herself, "This must be the first obstacle that monster mentioned. It looks tough, but we have to try anyway." She took a deep breath and took the lead in walking towards the net bridge. As soon as she took a step, the net bridge began to shake violently, and the surrounding mist began to surge wildly, as if something in the shadows was preparing to stop them.
The group followed closely behind Huanmo, carefully stepping onto the net bridge. But after only a few steps, countless vines suddenly emerged from the mist and lashed out at them with incredible speed, catching them completely off guard.
Huanmo brandished his sword, severing the vines that were whipping at him, and shouted, "Everyone be careful, these vines are tough to deal with!"
Wanru hurriedly blew her jade flute, and her spiritual power transformed into wind blades, shooting towards the vines. However, the vines were endless; as soon as one batch was cut off, another batch would sprout up. The group gradually found themselves unable to cope.
The woman in white plucked the strings of the guqin rapidly, the music transforming into spiritual energy waves that attempted to disperse the vines, but the effect was not ideal.
Ling'er hid behind the crowd, anxiously flipping through the books, trying to find a spell to subdue the vines, muttering, "What should I do? Why are there so many vines?"
Just as everyone was struggling to break free from the vines, a huge whirlpool suddenly appeared in the stream beneath the net bridge, emanating a powerful suction that seemed poised to pull them all in. How could they escape the vines, and how could they counter the whirlpool's pull? Could they successfully overcome this first obstacle and continue their journey into the unknown? Everything was once again fraught with danger and uncertainty…
