A Fantasy Love Story Across the Warring States Period
Chapter 13 Unexpected Encounter and New Crisis
Wanru stood outside the cave, clutching the bead that emitted a strange light tightly in her hand, her eyes warily fixed on the direction from which the sound of horses' hooves came. Her heart pounded in her chest, and the feeling of unease grew stronger.
"Who could it be? So many hoofbeats suddenly appearing in this desolate wilderness can't be a good thing." Wanru worried inwardly, various dangerous scenarios flashing through her mind. She subconsciously hid the bead in her bosom, as if this could protect the treasure that might be the only hope to save Huanmo.
The sound of horses' hooves grew closer, and the dust they kicked up billowed in the distance. Wanru squinted, trying to make out who was approaching. Soon, a group of armored soldiers came into view, their faces grim, charging menacingly toward the cave.
Wanru's face turned deathly pale instantly. She knew she was now isolated and helpless, utterly powerless against these soldiers. "Could it be that Huanmo's enemies discovered me here? Or are they after this bead?" Her thoughts were in turmoil, and her legs trembled slightly.
The soldiers reined in their horses not far from Wanru. The leader, who looked like a general, scrutinized her sharply, his eyes revealing a hint of doubt and judgment.
"Who are you? Why are you here?" the general asked in a loud voice, his tone particularly authoritative in the open countryside.
Wanru forced herself to remain calm, took a deep breath, and replied, "I... I'm just an ordinary woman passing through this area. I got lost and ended up near this cave." She tried to make her voice sound as steady as possible, but the fear in her heart still made her words tremble slightly.
The general frowned, clearly not quite believing her words. His gaze shifted downwards, seemingly noticing the faintly glowing beads that Wanru had hidden in her bosom.
"What are you hiding in your arms? Take it out and let us see!" At the general's command, several soldiers beside him immediately dismounted and took a few steps closer to Wanru.
Wanru was startled. She clutched the bead tightly to her chest and backed away repeatedly. "This...this is just a small heirloom from my family, it's not worth much. General, please spare me," she pleaded, knowing in her heart that once the bead was taken away, Huanmo would truly be beyond saving.
"Hmph! Don't try to deny it. I find your behavior suspicious; you must have some ulterior motive. Search me!" The general waved his hand impatiently, and the soldiers swarmed forward.
Wanru struggled fiercely, but how could a weak woman like her be a match for these strong soldiers? Soon, the pearl was snatched from her arms.
"No! Give it back to me!" Wanru cried out in despair, lunging at the soldier holding the bead. But before she could even touch him, she was shoved hard by someone nearby, falling to the ground and scraping her hand, which stung painfully.
The general held the bead, examining it closely, a glint of greed in his eyes. "This thing doesn't look simple; it might be some kind of treasure. Take it away!" With a command, two soldiers stepped forward, grabbed Wanru, and, ignoring her struggles and pleas, forced her onto their horses as well.
Wanru was forced onto the horse, tears streaming down her face. She was filled with despair, thinking of Huanmo still unconscious and waiting for rescue, her only hope now snatched away by these people. "What should I do? Huanmo, I'm so sorry, I couldn't save you..." she repeatedly blamed herself in her heart.
The soldiers carried Wanru and Zhuzi at breakneck speed, and after an unknown amount of time, they arrived at a city. Wanru was taken into a mansion within the city and immediately imprisoned in a dark cell.
The cell was damp and dark, reeking of an unpleasant odor. Wanru sat in the corner, her eyes vacant, at a loss for what to do. "Should I just give up like this? But how can I watch Huanmo die..." She clenched her fists, the resentment in her heart and her lingering affection for Huanmo rekindling a glimmer of hope.
Just as Wanru was racking her brains for a way to escape in her cell, she suddenly heard a quarrel outside the cell.
“General, that woman does seem suspicious, but we can’t just detain her like this. What if she’s innocent?” a gentler-sounding voice said.
"Hmph! What do you know? That bead is clearly no ordinary object. How could I let such a good thing slip by? Besides, if she were truly innocent, why would she appear near that remote mountain cave and hide that thing from us?" The general's voice remained as domineering as ever.
Wanru's heart skipped a beat; it seemed that someone was still willing to speak up for her. She quickly stood up, walked to the cell door, and peered out through the gaps in the bars.
The owner of the gentle voice was a young strategist who was arguing with a general in the corridor outside the prison cell.
"General, we must proceed with caution. If we get into any unnecessary trouble, it will be a loss that doesn't outweigh the gain," the strategist continued to advise.
The general frowned, seemingly wavering. "Then what do you suggest? Release her? But we can't give her back the bead!"
The strategist pondered for a moment and said, "Why don't we detain her here for now and send someone to investigate her background? If there are any problems, we can deal with her later."
The general thought for a moment, then finally nodded. "Alright, we'll do it your way. But you'd better keep a close eye on that bead!"
Wanru listened to their conversation in her cell, feeling both grateful and anxious. She was grateful that the strategist had spoken up for her, but anxious because the bead was still in the general's hands, and she had to find a way to get it back.
A few days later, the strategist indeed sent people to investigate Wanru's identity. Wanru knew this was her only chance, so she fabricated a seemingly plausible backstory, saying that she was an orphan from a small town in a distant place. Because her hometown was ravaged by war, she was forced to wander. She said that she had only accidentally found the bead while passing by a cave and wanted to keep it as a souvenir because she thought it was pretty.
After the investigators returned, they reported Wanru's words to the strategist and the general. The strategist, after hearing this, felt that Wanru's words seemed somewhat credible, so he went to the prison to ask Wanru for more details.
When Wanru saw the strategist arrive, she was overjoyed. She tried her best to appear pitiful and innocent, making her fabricated backstory more detailed and vivid, and even shedding a few tears from time to time to win the strategist's sympathy.
The strategist looked at Wanru, and his heart began to waver. He felt that Wanru did not seem to be the kind of person with ulterior motives, and that a weak woman in this war-torn era was indeed pitiful.
“Young lady, if what you say is true, then I will find a way to help you get the bead back and let you leave this place,” the strategist said softly.
Upon hearing this, Wanru was overjoyed and immediately said with tears of gratitude, "Thank you so much, sir. You are truly kind-hearted. I am eternally grateful."
However, just as the strategist was preparing to discuss the release of Wanru with the general, a commotion suddenly broke out in the city. Immediately afterwards, someone reported that enemy troops were attacking and the city was about to fall.
Upon hearing this, the general immediately summoned his soldiers to defend the city, and his strategist hurriedly followed.
When Wanru heard this news in her cell, she was shocked again. She didn't know what impact this sudden enemy force would have on her, nor did she know if she would still have a chance to retrieve the bead and save Huanmo.
