Chapter 77 The Purifier

Koprulu Sector, Otarian Rift.

The Spear of Adun rested silently in the void far from the rift, like a magnificent golden mountain.

Beside it, an equally massive and magnificent spaceship—the Genesis—hovered silently.

These two giant ships are like two dazzling pearls in the universe, shining brightly together.

Raynor gazed through the protective barrier of the Ecosystem at the clearly visible Alterian Rift in the distance, his heart filled with doubt and anticipation. He asked softly, "Is this the place Zeratul prophesied?"

Artanis gazed at the distant rift, his expression serious, and said, "That's right, according to ancient legends, the Xel'Naga came from a place where life shouldn't exist."

Kirsagh stood beside the two, his eyes fixed on the Otarian Rift, his brow furrowed, and said with concern, "I wonder if the Genesis's shields can withstand the high-energy particle streams there."

"The Spear of Adun can form a linked shield with the Genesis, as long as the energy frequencies match," Karax replied to Kirsaj while recording everything aboard the Genesis.

"What intrigues me is that this spaceship isn't equipped with any weapons." Artanis found it strange that such a massive ship lacked weapon systems.

If Genesis, without its weapon systems, were to encounter an unfriendly interstellar warship, wouldn't it simply be a matter of waiting to be destroyed?

“Actually, Genesis is equipped with a weapon system… its matter recombination device can break down nearby ships into data,” Kilsager replied somewhat embarrassedly, as the entire Genesis resembled a giant container for a matter recombination device.

"However, based on data analysis, I don't believe its shield can withstand attacks from warships of the same level until the matter recombination device takes effect," Kairax bluntly poured cold water on the idea.

"Well, after all, Genesis was just a hastily built colony ship." Kilsaji scratched the back of his head helplessly. No one knew the specific circumstances under which the Tek civilization built the Genesis.

"I have to say, you people are so ungrateful," Renault couldn't help but roll his eyes. "What more could you ask for in a ship this big?"

“Every tool has its own purpose, and this ship is clearly not a combat vessel.”

Just then, a four-legged Purifier mech suddenly made a sound, waving the sharp blade on its right arm, attracting the attention of everyone present.

Upon hearing this sound, Kirsajarn immediately shut his mouth.

Genesis's weapon system reduces the amount of data received by accelerating the decomposition of the matter recombination device, something she was too embarrassed to say aloud.

“That voice… could it be Phoenix?” Reno was very surprised. He clearly remembered that this Templar had fought bravely on the surface of El Al until he died from exhaustion.

"Do you know me? Human?" Phoenix asked with a hint of doubt, as he didn't recall ever having any dealings with a human.

“I am Jim Raynor.” Raynor was equally confused. He had originally thought that this Purifier was just a type of Dragon Knight, and that Phoenix should remember the time they fought side by side.

He felt a deep sense of guilt when facing Phoenix.

Back then, if Phoenix hadn't placed his full trust in them, that righteous Templar wouldn't have been so easily betrayed and assassinated by the Queen of Blades.

Even in death, the upright Templar never harbored the slightest resentment or hatred, but this guilt was deeply etched into the depths of his heart like a brand.

“Renault, my friend, I have something to say to you.” Just then, Artanis suddenly called out to Renault and cast an inquiring look at Phoenix.

“Ah, young executive officer, don’t worry too much about my feelings. I know very well what qualities a warrior should possess,” Phoenix replied, then turned and slowly walked towards the butterflies that were fluttering about.

As Phoenix drove away, Reno realized that his old friend seemed to be facing some intractable problems.

He turned to Artanis, his eyes full of doubt, hoping the other could provide a reasonable explanation.

“He is… Phoenix’s consciousness. This is part of the High Council’s Purifier Project, which aims to import Protoss consciousness into mechanical bodies.” Artanis explained solemnly to the two humans present. “Before his consciousness was imported, Phoenix had never met you.”

“Oh, I see. A fractal personality like HLN-A.” Killer Jake rested his chin on his hand thoughtfully, lost in thought. “So, how similar is he to that Phoenix now?”

“At least ninety-nine percent,” Kellax answered Kirsage’s question firmly, but then added, “However, he is ultimately not Phoenix himself.”

“But Phoenix herself is no longer alive, is she?” Kirsage raised his right hand, palm up, and used HLN-A as an example to explain to them, “After Helena passed away, HLN-A inherited her name and also took on her legacy.”

Artanis and Karax exchanged a glance. They knew they had seen "Helena" when they arrived on the Genesis, but they hadn't realized at the time that she might be a Purifier-like being.

“This…” Karax fell into deep thought, “but they are not the original people.”

“What’s the problem?” Kirsage replied casually, as if the matter had nothing to do with her. “The Genesis was carrying clones when it took off, and the original humans are long dead.”

“You mean the Purifiers should be considered part of the Protoss?” Artanis pressed.

“Of course! They possess memories of the past and deserve to be true citizens,” Kilsaji said firmly.

She believes the Protoss need not worry about being replaced by the Purifiers, because as a powerful psionic race, they are in no way inferior to the Purifiers.

Furthermore, the Protoss can have lifespans of up to four figures, so they don't place much importance on the lifespan extension bonus from Purifiers.

“But the Purifiers have betrayed us before…it seems we were wrong.” Karax tried to argue, but quickly realized that if that were true, then the Purifiers, who possessed the memories of the Templars, were far too loyal to be used as tools for so long without rebelling.

“I can’t imagine what it would be like if I didn’t receive any glory for hundreds of years…” Artanis put himself in the shoes of the Purifiers of that time and began to understand their thoughts. “It seems that we need to have a good talk with those predecessors.”

Kairax turned to look at Phoenix in the distance, and saw several colorful butterflies gently landing on the mechanical warrior. Their wings shimmered with iridescent light, like jewels adorning Phoenix's pure white, cold shell.

He could hardly believe that this weapon of war, assembled from trillions of Adamantium alloy compression structures, could blend so harmoniously with nature.

It was as if it were not just a cold and ruthless fighting machine, but something intimately connected with life.
