Chapter 82 Returning with a Full Load
The Oroqen elder gestured for Li Mu to be quiet. He quietly approached the cave, pressed his ear to the entrance, and listened carefully to the sounds inside.
"There is an adult fox inside, and it should be with several cubs."
"Come here and listen." Li Mu quickly moved closer to the cave entrance, imitating the old Oroqen man, pressing his ear to the entrance and listening carefully to the sounds inside.
He heard a faint squeaking sound and the scurrying of foxes, and his heart leaped with joy: "There really are cubs!"
"Well, did you hear that? These foxes are very cunning. We need to think of a way to catch them all in one fell swoop."
"Big brother, what do you suggest? I'll do whatever you say."
“This fox den has multiple exits. We need to block all the other exits first, leaving only one. Then we can set a trap at that exit and catch the foxes as soon as they come out.”
Li Mu nodded repeatedly: "Good idea! Let's get started now."
The Oroqen elder led Li Mu to search for other exits around the fox's den. Before long, they found two exits and blocked them tightly with branches and stones.
Then, they returned to the main exit, where the Oroqen old man took out a large net and several ropes from behind him and began to set a trap.
Li Mu watched from the side, secretly admiring the Oroqen old man's hunting skills. The trap was set ingeniously and secretly, and once the fox fell into it, it would have no chance of escaping.
After setting the trap, the Oroqen elder led Li Mu to hide in the bushes not far away, quietly waiting for the fox to appear.
Time passed second by second, and Li Mu was getting impatient. He was about to speak when the old man from Oroqen stopped him.
The Oroqen old man made a shushing gesture, indicating that Li Mu should not speak, and then pointed to the cave entrance.
Li Mu looked in the direction the Oroqen old man was pointing and saw a fox's head peeking out of the hole. It looked around and, finding nothing unusual, cautiously crawled out of the hole.
The fox had only taken a few steps when it triggered the trap and was firmly entangled in the large net.
"Tsk! Tsk tsk!"
The Oroqen old man laughed triumphantly: "Haha, it worked! This fox is very cunning, but I didn't expect it to fall for our trick."
Li Mu smiled and strode forward. Looking at the fox trapped in the net, he couldn't help but feel excited: "Brother, you set this trap so cleverly, even I couldn't have seen it."
“There are foxes around here. Learn to hunt them yourself. If you don’t catch two adult foxes before dark, don’t call yourself an Oroqen! You hear me? Two!”
"Row!"
The old man sat on a rock and smoked his pipe, while Li Mu took the hunting knife the Oroqen old man had given him and, imitating the old man, began searching for fox tracks in the snow.
On the snow, fox footprints appeared and disappeared. Li Mu stared wide-eyed as he searched, recalling the method the Oroqen elder had taught him to identify footprints.
After searching for a while, Li Mu finally found two clear lines of fox footprints in a relatively open area of snow and immediately followed them. After walking for a short while, he found that the footprints suddenly disappeared, and all around him was a vast expanse of white, with nothing to see.
Li Mu felt a little anxious. He stopped and looked around.
Just then, a faint sound reached his ears. He immediately became alert and crept quietly in the direction from which the sound came.
Parting a thicket of bushes, Li Mu finally spotted three foxes. What luck! They were three adult foxes, huddled together.
He approached step by step, getting closer and closer to the fox, until he was less than ten meters away.
Li Mu took a deep breath, rushed out, and swung his hunting knife at the fox.
The three foxes were clearly startled by Li Mu's sudden attack, and they scattered in panic.
Li Mu reacted swiftly, slashing a fox's hind leg with a single blow. The fox let out a miserable cry, fell to the ground, struggled a few times, and then lay still.
Seeing this, the other two foxes were so frightened that they fled even more desperately.
"Heh, a bit too green." The Oroqen old man watched as Li Mu chopped down a fox with a single stroke, then dropped his pipe and walked over, picked up the fox from the ground, and skillfully skinned it.
"Not bad, you managed to hunt a fox on your first try. You've got some skills."
Li Mu chuckled, feeling quite pleased with himself. He glanced at the other two foxes that had escaped, a hint of regret flashing in his eyes: "What a pity, those two foxes got away."
"It's alright. You should have been calmer just now and not rushed things. Hunting foxes requires patience and skill. You were too reckless and charged at the prey as soon as you saw it! Next time, wait until those two foxes are off guard before you make your move. Come on, let's look around again. Maybe we can find some traces of them."
The Oroqen elder led Li Mu, following the footprints left by the two escaped foxes, deeper into the dense forest.
The footprints on the snow appeared and disappeared intermittently, but the experienced Oroqen man carefully identified them and led Li Mu to follow them.
After walking for a while, they finally arrived at a relatively secluded valley. In the valley, there was an open area with some withered branches and leaves scattered on the ground, as well as fox droppings and fur.
“Look, this should be the habitat of those two foxes,” the Oroqen old man pointed to the marks on the ground.
The valley is surrounded by dense trees, with only one narrow exit.
"Brother, let's set a trap here and catch those two foxes when they come back."
"You set the trap." This time, the Oroqen elder let Li Mu do it himself, while he guided him from the side.
Following the example of the Oroqen elder, Li Mu spread a large net on the ground and then covered it with branches and leaves, leaving only a small opening. He then scattered some fruits that foxes love to eat at the opening as bait.
After the trap was set, the Oroqen old man and Li Mu hid behind a rock not far away. This time, the foxes fell for the trap and came in from the hidden valley exit. They sniffed the air as they walked toward the trap.
The two foxes were clearly unaware of the approaching danger; they were still engrossed in the joy of finding food.
Just then, one of the foxes stepped on a branch in the trap, making a soft snapping sound.
The fox immediately became alert. It raised its head and looked around, but it was too late.
The fox had barely taken a step when it was caught in the net. The other fox, seeing this, turned to run away in fright. Li Mu reacted quickly and threw his hunting knife, which struck the fleeing fox in the front leg. The fox yelped in pain and fell to the ground.
Li Mu quickly stepped forward and tied up both foxes.
"Haha, good job, kid! You did a great job this time!"
