"What is this?" The old woman's son took the package and instinctively squeezed it. The strange sensation made him hesitate to open it.

“You’re asking me? I’d like to ask you the same thing.” Captain Ma glanced at him sideways. “These were all taken out of your mother’s womb.”

The paper package fell to the ground, its contents spilling out, instantly filling the entire cell with a pungent odor. The relatives exchanged bewildered glances, wondering what the officers from the Commandant's Office were up to. The old woman's son, pale as if he had seen a ghost, kept his distance from the object.

Lu Yun returned, with a little girl. As soon as the little girl saw the old woman's son, she rushed over and, through the cell door, screamed at the top of her lungs, "Chen Yaozu, you bastard, you killed my mother, I'm going to kill you!"

The little girl, Jinzhi, was an adopted daughter the old woman had taken in while begging on the street. She and the old woman relied on each other for survival during the time the old woman was driven out of her home by her son and daughter-in-law. In front of the prison gate, Jinzhi, her eyes red, sobbed uncontrollably. She said her adoptive mother was a child bride in the family, consummating her marriage at fifteen, giving birth to Chen Yaozu at sixteen, and becoming a widow before twenty. After her parents-in-law passed away, she raised Chen Yaozu alone.

When he was young, Chen Yaozu was quite filial. He often helped his mother with chores. When the neighbors saw this, they all said that the hard times were over and the good days were yet to come.

This happiness came to an abrupt end when Chen Yaozu was eighteen years old.

He married the girl he grew up with and, with his father-in-law's help, got a job as a clerk at Xinglong Pawnshop, where he met the shopkeeper's only daughter. He wanted to rise quickly in his career but didn't want to bear the stigma of abandoning his wife and child. So, while his wife was giving birth, he bribed the midwife, resulting in the deaths of both mother and child.

The soil on his wife and children's graves was still wet when he rushed to marry the shopkeeper's daughter. When his parents-in-law came to question him, he instigated his servants to beat them up. Seeing her son become so heartless and ungrateful, the old woman wanted to sever her relationship with him, but she was driven out by the changed Chen Yaozu and his domineering new wife.

Jinzhi pointed at Chen Yaozu, "He not only kicked my mother out of the house, but also sold her old house and shop, leaving her homeless and forced to beg on the streets like me. Later, he developed a gambling addiction and, not daring to let his new wife know, he would ask my mother for money. When she refused, he would beat her and complain that she was incompetent and couldn't let him live the life of a wealthy family."

"He even blamed his wife and children's deaths on his mother, saying that if his mother hadn't been so incompetent, he wouldn't have had to get rid of his wife and children to please the hot-tempered new wife and become a submissive son-in-law."

Chen Yaozu was furious and pointed at Jinzhi: "Nonsense! Where did you come from, beggar, to dare to spread rumors in front of adults?"

“Jinzhi is not spreading rumors. The house you live in now is your wife’s dowry, the house left to you by your grandparents, and the grain and oil shop that your mother earned for you has long been squandered by you.” Lu Yun stepped forward, his eyes gloomy: “Not only that, you also lied to your wife, your parents-in-law and your relatives and friends, falsely claiming to be a member of the Pingnan Marquis’s family, and under the guise of helping them manage their businesses, you squandered their private property.”

Lu Yun tossed out a stack of documents, all of which were evidence of Chen Yaozu's gambling debts and the collateral he had used to pawn his shops. These documents caused an uproar in the cell, and Chen Yaozu was surrounded by his relatives and friends.

"This is my family's shop. When did it become mortgaged to a gambling den?"

"And my house, you said you were going to use it for storage, and I didn't even ask for rent! Explain to me what exactly happened?"

"Yaozu, is what you're telling your second uncle true? Aren't you the steward of the Pingnan Marquis's mansion? How could a steward owe so much money?" The old man pushed through the crowd, holding something related to his family, and walked shakily to the man: "These... were they really gambled away after you tricked me into giving them to you?"

"These are all fake. How could I gamble? How could I lose? If I had lost, where would those things I gave you have come from?" Chen Yaozu said guiltily, "I am from the Marquis of Pingnan's mansion. If you don't believe me, you can go to the mansion and ask."

Chen Yaozu was certain they wouldn't dare go to the Marquis's residence to ask, but then he saw Lu Zhiyuan walk up to the prison gate and beckon to him: "Do you know who my mother is? Do you know who I am? Do you know who he is?"

Chen Yaozu frowned: "Isn't your mother the owner of that clinic? A woman who doesn't stay at home to take care of her husband and children, but goes out in public, who knows how she got that clinic. As for you, the clinic owner's daughter? He's your servant, you can tell just by looking at his clothes."

"Fool!" Captain Ma cursed under his breath. He thought to himself that if it weren't for the cell door separating them, he would have slapped him across the face.

Lu Zhiyuan wasn't angry. Instead, she smiled and said, "You said you're the steward of the Marquis of Pingnan's mansion? We're about the same age, but as far as I know, stewards don't look like you."

"I am the steward of the villa!" the man said defiantly, puffing out his chest. "Have you heard of Chaoyun Villa? It's the dowry of the Marquis's wife, the residence of the Marquis's daughter. Miss Lu trusts me implicitly, entrusting me with all the affairs of the villa. Everyone in the capital knows that the steward of the Marquis's mansion is far inferior to the steward of the villa. The Marquis's mansion belongs to the Lu family, but the villa belongs to both the Xie and Lu families. I warn you, never offend me, or you will offend both the Xie and Lu families."

Lu Zhiyuan clapped her hands and took two steps back: "The steward of Chaoyun Courtyard? If I remember correctly, there have only been two stewards for this courtyard. The first one was buried alive for betraying the young master. The second one is the person who buried him alive, and he is standing in front of you now. Lu Yun, tell him who you are."

"The new housekeeper of Chaoyun Courtyard!"

"You? A mere brat who's just been weaned dares to call himself the steward of Chaoyun Villa?" Chen Yaozu laughed like a fool: "You think the Marquis's Mansion, the Xie family, and Miss Lu are blind?"

“Miss isn’t blind, you are!” Lu Yun sneered, a smirk playing on his lips. “After all, you don’t even recognize Madam and Miss, yet you dare to impersonate the steward of Chaoyun Courtyard.”

Commander Ma cleared his throat and said with a stern face, "Let me introduce you to someone who's blind. This is the wife of the Marquis of Pingnan, the daughter of General Xie, and the most beloved younger sister of Vice Minister Xie. This is the legitimate daughter of the Marquis's family, the young mistress of Chaoyun Villa. As for me, I'm sure you already know me. If you don't want to be skinned alive, you'd better tell me honestly. We, especially me, have bad tempers."

Chen Yaozu was dumbfounded; the fraud had actually reached the person in question.

His legs moved faster than his brain; he knelt on the ground with a thud, begging for mercy repeatedly. Halfway through his pleas, he suddenly stood up, staring at Lu Zhiyuan and saying, "Are you trying to trick me? That clinic isn't owned by the Marquis's family, and the manager isn't surnamed Lu. Besides, everyone in the capital knows that the Marquis's eldest daughter is a sickly woman who won't live long. How could she possibly be here? I'm fake, that's true, but neither are you. No matter what, my mother was poisoned by your clinic, and you should compensate me."

"You won't shed a tear until you see the coffin." Captain Ma rolled up his sleeves: "You dare to curse the young lady? I'll beat you until you tell the truth."
