She was clearly not destined for a life of comfort; she tried to lie down for a while, but as soon as she did, she felt extremely uncomfortable.

Finally, she resigned herself to her fate and got up to practice calligraphy.

For the next few days, Du Mingxian stayed at home, cooking and reading with Ling Silang.

Because Ling Silang was going to take an exam and needed to adjust to the weather, and also because they were worried he might get sick, neither of them went into the space to sleep anymore, but slept outside instead.

At first, Sun Tao and his wife would argue a bit, but these past two days they haven't heard a sound from them. Liu Ya, on the other hand, still goes to work on time every day and comes back on time to cook.

That night, Du Mingxian and Ling Silang were sleeping when they heard someone banging on the wall next door in the middle of the night. Although the noise was light, both of them were alert and woke up.

"Guo Chen has always been quiet. Could it be that something's wrong with him suddenly smashing the wall like this?"

Ling Silang got up. "I'll go check on it. You go to sleep first."

"it is good."

Ling Silang finished dressing and came out. He had just knocked on the door when he suddenly remembered that if Guo Chen couldn't get out of bed, he wouldn't be able to open the door. He wasn't really good at prying open doors.

Resigned, he returned to his room and said somewhat helplessly, "I'm afraid you'll have to get up and check. Guo Chen should be in bed; the door is closed from the inside."

Du Mingxian had already considered this possibility. She had just finished dressing in bed when she said, "Let's go and take a look."

Du Mingxian used a dagger to pry open the door little by little. After going inside... the temperature inside the room was the same as outside. She shivered as she got out of bed.

Ling Silang stepped forward first, holding an oil lamp in his hand, "Guo Chen? Guo Chen?"

Guo Chen lay on the bed, drowsy and hoarse, his voice trembling, "Help, help me!"

Ling Silang walked quickly to the bedside, lifted the thick bed curtains, and saw that Guo Chen's face was very red under the light, clearly indicating that he was ill.

Ling Silang took Du Mingxian's pulse, and Du Mingxian took the oil lamp. However, she stood behind the bed and did not look into the room, for fear of seeing something she shouldn't. In the darkness, she turned around and found the oil lamp in Guo Chen's room and lit it.

With a sliver of light in the room, Du Mingxian then looked for something to light the charcoal brazier.

There wasn't much charcoal left in Guo Chen's room, and as soon as it was put in, Du Mingxian saw smoke, which was obviously not good. She quickly put the two pieces of charcoal that were already burning into her spatial storage.

I took two good ones out of my storage space and put them into the charcoal brazier.

Once the charcoal brazier was lit, the room temperature gradually rose.

Seeing that Du Mingxian had finished lighting the charcoal brazier, Ling Silang said, "We need to give him some water first, and then get some medicine."

"Oh." Du Mingxian responded by taking out a thermos of warm water from her spatial storage and pouring it into Guo Chen's teacup. Ling Silang took it in to feed him the water, while she had already gone back to her room.

It was already past midnight, and the charcoal brazier in her room wasn't very hot. Du Mingxian added some charcoal, and Ling Silang returned just as she finished.

Neither of them spoke. In perfect unison, Ling Silang went into his spatial dimension to prepare the medicine, while Du Mingxian set up a pot in the room and slowly cooked porridge.

Ling Silang prepared the medicine in his spatial dimension and brewed it directly there before bringing it out.

Du Mingxian instructed, "This porridge will take a little while to prepare."

"Well, it's almost dawn. Go to bed and get some sleep. I'll go feed the medicine and then come back to check on the porridge. You don't need to worry about it."

"Okay, then remember to come back and check on the porridge, and stir it again."

Ling Silang went out to see Guo Chen, while Du Mingxian went to bed and went straight into her spatial dimension to sleep. She slept outside because she didn't want Ling Silang to make noise when he came back.

She slept very soundly, and when she woke up, she found it was already past ten o'clock. Ling Silang was not in bed, and when she came out, she found that he was not in the room either.

There was still some porridge left, and the pot was set aside.

She got dressed and went next door, only to find Ling Silang still there. "How is he?"

"The fever has subsided, but he hasn't woken up yet."

"Okay, I'll go cook."

"Mm." Ling Silang responded, and got up to walk back with Du Mingxian. She turned back, "Aren't you going to stay here with Guo Chen?"

"No, he should be feeling better once he wakes up. I'll cook for you first, and then I'll bring him some later."

"it is good."

After the two prepared the meal, Ling Silang ate at home before delivering it to Guo Chen, while Du Mingxian read a book in her room—a storybook from this era.

She had seen these before but hadn't bought them in a long time. If she looked at them again, she felt something was missing, so she decided to go out and buy them herself.

Before he could even leave, Ling Silang returned. "Want to go out?"

"Let's go for a walk."

"I'll go with you."

"No need. Guo Chen hasn't woken up yet, and we don't know what's going on. You should stay home for now. I'll go for a walk and come back in a bit."

"it is good."

Du Mingxian strolled out and wandered slowly through the streets. With the imperial examination approaching, the number of people on the streets had increased significantly, and the place was bustling with activity. Although the weather wasn't great, it couldn't dampen everyone's enthusiasm.

After strolling around for a while, I bought some books, some snacks, and a few fun little trinkets for An'an. Then I strolled back home.

About fifteen minutes' walk from the alleyway near my home, I spotted a familiar figure.

Lin Guixiang was holding the hand of a thin, small child, who was Sun Tao's son.

Du Mingxian was quite surprised. Lin Guixiang didn't seem to like that child that much, so why would she bring Sun Tao's son out to play?

She had her doubts, but since she had encountered him on the road, she couldn't pretend not to see him. She took two steps forward, intending to say hello, when she saw Lin Guixiang push the child next to her into that person's arms, turn around and leave, and leave very quickly.

Her heart skipped a beat, a bad feeling creeping over her. The woman was about to leave with the still bewildered child when she hurriedly stepped forward to stop her. "Who are you to this child?"

The middle-aged woman frowned, very impatiently, "Who are you? Mind your own business."

“I live in the same courtyard as this child’s parents.”

"So what if it's just a courtyard? His mother sold it to me." The middle-aged woman said and left.

Du Mingxian didn't know what to say, and didn't try to stop the middle-aged woman again. But since she had run into her, she didn't leave and go home directly. Instead, she followed the middle-aged woman.

She followed quietly until the middle-aged woman led her child into a small courtyard, at which point she went home.

When she got home, she saw that everyone was in the yard, even the little girl who lived in the main house was standing there.

Lin Guixiang kept crying, "I don't know where my child could have run off to. I just took him out to buy some things, and when I turned around, he was gone."

"Let's report it to the authorities, the government will help us find it," Liu Ya suggested, also feeling anxious.

Lin Guixiang trembled slightly. "There are so many people taking the exam now, and the government is very busy. I wonder if the government will take action if we report this to them?"

"Yes, as long as you report it to the authorities, they will handle it."
