Chapter 2 Fulfilling a Vow at the Temple
After taking a shower, Li Shuchen lay down on the bed, closed his eyes, and pondered. His mind was a jumble of thoughts, but he had very few memories of the Purple Star Dynasty.
I don't know if it's because she was incredibly naive before and can't remember anything after we met, or if she's just too simple-minded and her family didn't allow her to interact with many people.
I only remember a few memorable people and events.
Her mind is now mostly filled with memories of the 21st century; her current outlook on life, values, and worldview are also those formed in modern times.
Li Shuchen dozed off for a short while, then heard Grape come in and say...
"Miss, it's time to eat. Let me help you get dressed."
Li Shuchen waited patiently, after all, she wasn't quite used to wearing such clothes, with so many layers inside and out. She'd put them on herself once she learned how.
After getting dressed, I followed behind Grape, thinking as I walked about how to explain.
Soon they arrived at the dining table in the front hall. Li Shuchen sat down nimbly and slowly began, "Father, Mother, Xiao'er, Grape, just now when I was taking a bath, a golden light suddenly fell on me."
Then my head started hurting terribly, really terribly. After the pain subsided, I felt better. I'm not stupid anymore. From now on, I'll work hard to earn money to support my parents, love Xiao'er, and be good to Grape.
After he finished speaking, no one spoke for a moment; everyone stared wide-eyed at Li Shuchen.
Li Lingxiao was the first to react, looking at Li Shuchen with hopeful eyes. "Sister, you're really better! Really!" she exclaimed, jumping off the stool and throwing herself into Li Shuchen's arms.
At this moment, Master Li also realized what was happening, and excitedly said "Good, good, good" several times, his eyes reddening.
Madam Li also came over and hugged Li Shuchen, crying, "I knew it! Ruyi Temple is the most efficacious. It wasn't for nothing that I went to pray there every day. Buddha must have seen my sincerity, which is why my daughter has become better. It's truly Buddha's blessing, Buddha's blessing!"
Grape was crying uncontrollably beside him, her eyes never leaving Li Shuchen, not daring to blink, for fear that this was a dream.
Madam Li wiped away her tears and said, "Mother will take you to Ruyi Temple to fulfill your vow tomorrow. No, we'll go right after we finish eating. Eat quickly."
"Let's go together, all of us!" Master Li said excitedly, and Li Lingxiao nodded emphatically as well.
Li Shuchen silently breathed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, they believed him and didn't investigate further.
When she was little, her mother took her to many doctors and gave her a lot of medicine, but her condition didn't improve. So her mother turned to Buddha, and sure enough, metaphysics provided a particularly good explanation.
After dinner, the family took out their best clothes, dressed neatly, and went to Ruyi Temple to fulfill their vow.
On the way, the sky was blue, the sun was warm, and the wind was sweet. Mrs. Li told everyone she met, "Thank Buddha, my Chen'er is cured! Hahaha, thank Buddha, thank Buddha!"
By the time they arrived at the temple, it was almost dark. Madam Li offered incense and knelt in prayer, her devotion sincere and earnest. She also donated some money for incense oil.
Master Li also obediently kowtowed several times.
Li Shuchen knelt down with great enthusiasm and kowtowed with utmost sincerity.
Silently, I thanked Buddha for giving me a second chance at life.
[Auspicious? –_–? It was clearly my power that brought this to you, but seeing how sincerely she was kowtowing, I didn't say anything to disturb her.]
After finishing her kowtow, Li Shuchen obediently stood aside, letting others scrutinize her. She understood; when a fool suddenly became sensible, everyone would want to examine him closely to see if it was real or not.
The older woman standing nearby, seeing how earnestly Mr. and Mrs. Li were kowtowing, and then looking at Li Shuchen...
The moment their eyes met, Li Shuchen remembered who it was and sweetly called out, "Aunt Zhang."
Aunt Zhang lived in Ping'an Lane, and Li Shuchen lived not far from her house. She remembered that Li Shuchen had only been married into the lane for a few years.
On her wedding day, Aunt Zhang gave her a piece of candy; it was so sweet.
Hearing Li Shuchen call her Aunt Zhang, she quickly came over, grabbed Li Shuchen's hand, and said in disbelief, "Girl, you're really all better?!"
"Yes, Aunt Zhang, I'm doing well now," Li Shuchen smiled sweetly.
"Your mother comes to pray every day; her sincerity must have moved Buddha."
Before Li Shuchen could answer, he hurriedly knelt before the Buddha, muttering something unintelligible, and bowed repeatedly to the Buddha statue.
On the way home, they relied on a small lantern, and the road wasn't easy to walk on, but no one complained. Everyone was happy, chatting and laughing all the way.
After Li Shuchen's family returned from fulfilling their vow, a wave of people flocked to Ruyi Temple to make wishes, as everyone knew about the girl who had been mentally challenged for over a decade.
Suddenly things improved, and people started donating money, making Ruyi Temple look even more magnificent and imposing than before.
Ever since Li Lingxiao learned that his older sister had improved, the corners of his mouth had never left her side. He followed her closely, constantly grinning foolishly, as if he had become the fool because his older sister was no longer foolish.
It's already past midnight (11 p.m.), and instead of going to sleep, he's just staring at Li Shuchen.
Li Shuchen looked at his silly younger brother and remembered that he was already fourteen years old and still hadn't started school.
"Little brother, do you want to go to school?" Li Shuchen stared at him intently.
"Sister, I don't want to," he shook his head, but Li Shuchen didn't miss the fleeting longing on his face, and then the smile on her face faded a little.
Li Shuchen looked at him without saying a word. Silly little brother, he's even learned to lie to his older sister.
Li Shuchen didn't pursue the topic further and sent Li Lingxiao back to sleep.
After washing up and lying in bed, she vaguely remembered that her family used to run an inn. Life shouldn't have turned out like this; the whole place was just an empty shell, and her younger brother couldn't even afford to go to school.
But her parents had never mentioned her past mental instability, so I guess I'll have to ask them tomorrow what happened.
Time passed slowly, the night faded, and the morning light rose.
After washing up, Li Shuchen came to the front hall for breakfast. Looking at the four bowls of thin porridge on the table, almost completely empty, and the small dish of pickled vegetables he could finish in one bite, he fell into deep thought.
Yesterday she was so focused on explaining herself that she didn't pay attention to what she ate. Only today did she realize how poor she was!
Li Shuchen then recalled that on her old dressing table, there was only a plain peach wood hairpin and a pair of small earrings with an outdated style and color that even older women wouldn't wear.
All of them combined aren't even worth as much as one of my silver bracelets.
He had very few clothes. His inner garments were somewhat better, made of cotton, but his outer garments were made of coarse cloth and were not very comfortable to wear. The only advantage was that they had no patches, so they looked somewhat presentable.
She felt she needed to make money quickly to improve her and her family's quality of life.
After his parents were seated, Li Shuchen asked, "Father, Mother, don't we own an inn? Is business not good?"
Madam Li was taken aback, and a hint of embarrassment flashed across Mr. Li's face as well.
"Chen'er, your father and I are bad at managing money, and we've almost lost everything. It's all my fault for being incompetent and not being able to give you a good life," said Master Li, but there was no shame on his face.
Li Lingxiao remained silent to the side. He knew why the inn had been consistently losing money, but he dared not speak.
Madam Li smiled and said, "Chen'er, do you want to run an inn? Our laws allow women to engage in commerce, Chen'er can give it a try."
Before Li Shuchen could answer, Master Li instructed Grape, "After dinner, Grape, accompany your young lady to check out the inn."
Grape: "Yes"
Li Shuchen looked at her parents and, for some reason, saw relief and joy on her mother's face, while her father looked relieved.
Li Shuchen was puzzled, but she didn't ask; she knew she would find out the reason eventually.
After the meal, Li Shuchen and Grape walked through two alleys and arrived at the dock. The dock was large, with many merchant ships and strong men unloading goods back and forth. Further ahead was a post station. The road was crowded with people of all kinds, from all walks of life, including the wealthy and powerful.
Walk straight for a while, then turn right and continue until the end of the road. There, Li Shuchen saw a young man dressed as a waiter sitting there, sighing.
"Sigh, Manager Xu, when will the owner finally focus on the inn? If we keep losing money, we'll starve."
