Transmigrated Little Farm Girl Bringing Great Fortune

Chapter 7 The Weasel Delivers Chickens

The bird spoke human language again.

Something always seems to happen every time we talk...

Jiang Miaomiao suddenly opened her eyes, her eyeballs rolling around.

If she heard correctly, the bird just said that a weasel came to her house to steal chickens.

How could this be.

That chicken was saved by my mother for her and my siblings to lay eggs...

She tried to scratch her mother with her hand, but her little hands only scratched her, like an itch.

Her mother patted her little bottom... and she fell asleep again.

Hey!

Jiang Miaomiao had completely forgotten that she was a baby.

She started crying loudly, finally waking her sleeping mother.

"Mother is here... Mother is here..." Lu Qingyao dazedly reached out and touched the baby's bottom.

It's dry, no urine?

"Is Miaomiao hungry?" he said, taking off his clothes again to try and breastfeed her.

Jiang Miaomiao stopped crying and tightly closed her mouth.

She's not hungry.

I ate just an hour ago and I was very full.

And, for the first time ever, she vomited up milk.

When people are hungry for a long time, they are more likely to overeat...

Even babies are no exception.

"Is Miaomiao feeling unwell? Does her tummy hurt?" Lu Qingyao asked anxiously, checking her over from head to toe.

I rubbed her tummy again.

Jiang Miaomiao was also anxious, waving her little fists.

Mother, if you don't go out soon, the weasel will eat the whole chicken...

"Mother, there seems to be some noise outside." Jiang Ziyan had extremely keen hearing.

Lu Qingyao paused in her work and listened intently.

It sounds like a rooster crowing.

I bought a hen this morning, and I kept one to save for the eggs to feed the kids.

Could there be a chicken thief?

"You all stay inside and watch over my sister. I'm going to check on the chickens."

After giving her two sons some instructions, Lu Qingyao put on an overcoat, picked up her red-tasseled spear, and tiptoed out.

The three siblings stared wide-eyed.

Look at Mother's posture.

It doesn't look like they're going to catch a thief; it looks more like they're going to fight.

Although it's just a chicken, the family's current situation is worrying.

The kitchen was repaired, charcoal was bought, and some quilts, clothes, pots and pans were added.

The money my mother got from exchanging her jewelry was used to pay off debts, and the rest was almost all spent.

The items under the peach tree were probably gifts from my maternal grandparents, or part of my mother's dowry.

Not a single thing can be touched.

So, their family must really be short of money.

Looking at my mother's delicate hands, they didn't seem like someone who had done heavy work.

The charcoal and firewood to be burned later.

That's a big problem too.

Although winters in the south are warmer than in the north, the humidity is much higher there.

Without charcoal, it can get so cold that a person could freeze to death!

Half an hour later, Mother returned.

Three pairs of eyes were all staring at her.

"Mother, is the chicken still there?"

Through the dim candlelight, Jiang Miaomiao saw the expression on her mother's face, which was somewhat ambiguous.

I can't tell if I'm happy or sad.

Lu Qingyao pursed her lips.

These superstitious and bizarre tales shouldn't be spoken aloud; they'll only frighten children.

I've lived half my life.

I've only ever heard of weasels stealing chickens.

I've never heard of a weasel delivering chickens before...

"Mother, what's wrong?" Jiang Ziyan, being observant, also noticed the strange expression on his mother's face.

"Mom just went out to check and saw two very large weasels... They didn't eat our chickens, but..."

"But what's wrong?" the two brothers asked curiously.

Jiang Miaomiao blinked, sucked her fingers, and looked at her mother with her big, round eyes, drooling.

Her mother took a handkerchief and wiped her face.

"The weasel didn't steal our chickens, but instead gave us two lively old hens. Isn't that strange?"

"Mom, are you kidding us?" Jiang Zifeng didn't believe it. How could his mother's lies to fool a child like this?

"The storybooks say that weasels steal chickens, but they never say they'll deliver them. I'm going out to check..."

He was about to get out of bed and put on his shoes.

Lu Qingyao smiled and stopped him, "Alright, Mom was just teasing you. Go back to sleep and don't mention this to anyone."

Lu Qingyao gave her son a few instructions and then covered him with a blanket.

Her two children had been raised in the capital since childhood and had never seen a weasel before.

I've only ever seen him when I went hunting with my brothers.

Now that I'm in the countryside, everything seems new and exciting.

fair enough.

That way, life won't feel so hard.

It's no wonder that Brother Feng didn't believe it.

If she hadn't witnessed it with her own eyes, no one would have believed it if she told them.

Weasels are known as Huang Daxian in folklore, and are even said to be capable of becoming spirits.

But she absolutely did not believe it.

It's all just a coincidence!

Perhaps the weasel stole someone else's chicken and was trying to steal hers when it happened to catch it.

That must be it...

"Miaomiao, go to sleep too!" Lu Qingyao picked up Jiang Miaomiao and gently patted her back.

Jiang Miaomiao, however, began to believe it.

Ever since she became the only one who could understand birds, she knew she possessed a special ability.

However, this superpower is actually quite good, as it inexplicably gave her family some extra food.

Early morning of the next day.

The rooster has not yet crowed.

Jiang Miaomiao was picked up by her mother and breastfed. In her drowsy state, she saw that her mother was already dressed.

After feeding her, she tied the breast to her chest.

I walked towards the kitchen.

There were two large, fat chickens in a wooden basin in the kitchen, with big, white chicken legs.

Their hair was also stripped off.

A strong, fishy smell, like chicken feathers being scalded by hot water, hit my nose.

Jiang Miaomiao was most afraid of this smell, so she quickly buried her head in her mother's arms.

Lu Qingyao sensed the baby's unease in her arms and gently patted her bottom.

"Miaomiao, let's put the chicken in the cellar, and then we'll have fresh chicken to eat every day."

Jiang Miaomiao made a few babbling sounds and snuggled into her mother's arms.

I found a comfortable position to watch.

Then I saw my mother rub salt on two chickens, cut off their heads and feet, stuff them into a red clay pot, and pour water around the edge of the pot.

Walking into the back kitchen, they parted the straw to reveal a wooden plank. Moving the plank aside, they found a cellar surrounded by ice blocks.

Then the earthenware jar was placed inside and sealed.

Jiang Miaomiao couldn't remember when her mother had dug the cellar here and stored ice.

They must have dug it up while she was asleep.

It's practically an ancient version of a refrigerator.

No wonder my mother said we have fresh meat to eat every day.

It has to be said that, apart from being mediocre at cooking, she's good at everything else.

Jiang Miaomiao even started to admire her mother a little...

Lu Qingyao tidied everything up and straightened her clothes.

It was still dark when I took my daughter home for a nap.

Looking down, she saw the little baby in her arms staring straight at her.

In a daze, I felt as if my daughter knew what I was doing.

He hooked her little finger around his finger and gave her a sweet smile. "Miaomiao, this is our little secret, you can't tell anyone!"

Jiang Miaomiao blinked and responded to her with babbling.

I won't tell!

The rooster crowed.

The sky gradually turned a pale white.

Jiang Miaomiao had a good sleep and a full meal of milk.

In a daze, she was led out the door by her mother. Not long after the carriage left, she ran into her aunt.

Lu Qingyao greeted her first, "Are you also going to Qing Shi Town, sister-in-law?"
