Chapter 37: Going with the flow

A horse-drawn carriage suddenly appeared on the country road, and the villagers who were on their way home were very curious and pointed to who was sitting in the carriage.

Xiang He and Xiang Huiying followed behind. Xiang Huiying was eager to know who was inside, but they were riding in a carriage, so they must be extremely wealthy and powerful, far beyond the reach of a village woman like herself.

"Hey girl, do you know who's inside?"

Xiang He smiled broadly, "Who else could it be but the young master of the Wang family?"

Xiang Huiying exclaimed in surprise, "They wouldn't really be here to propose marriage, would they?"

“It’s possible,” Xiang He said, taking a few quick steps to keep a distance of about ten feet from the carriage. “This marriage will definitely not happen.”

"Why are you so sure?"

"Just keep watching and you'll find out."

Putting aside the absurd incident this morning, just looking at Lianhua and Wang Rongxing's faces, these two don't look like a married couple at all, let alone have any connection as husband and wife. It's just a fleeting affair.

Moreover, her statement that Xiang Lianhua would not be allowed into the Wang family was not just empty talk.

Everything just went with the flow.

Xiang Huiying stared at her with wide, questioning eyes. He Yatou always seemed so confident, as if she had gained a lot more ideas. Before, she wouldn't even dare to say a word, but now sometimes she said things that even she couldn't understand...

Feeling a bit dizzy from thinking, Xiang Huiying immediately shook her head. Anyway, she would see the results soon, so there was no point in thinking about it now.

The two followed the carriage quietly. After walking a short distance, they encountered some elderly women resting by the roadside. Everyone was very curious about the owner of the carriage, and despite their tired feet, they immediately got up and followed.

"Hey girl, whose carriage is that?"

In this village, everyone knows each other after just a few meetings, from grandparents to children. Moreover, Xiang He has been busy lately with family divisions and house construction, so he knows almost everyone.

"I don't know either. Does the old lady want to go and take a look?"

"Of course!" The old woman fanned herself with a large leaf. "This impressive carriage, I'd like to see which family it's heading to!"

Sure enough, gossip is human nature.

As more and more curious people arrived, they soon entered Xiangjia Village. The village chief was sitting on the threshold at the entrance. Seeing this, he immediately sensed something was wrong, and his face darkened when he saw Xiang He.

Perhaps the noise from the back of the carriage was too loud, which finally alerted the person inside. He lifted the curtain and stuck his head out to look back, and immediately spotted Xiang He.

"parking!"

The carriage stopped, and the man stepped down gracefully, waving and smiling at Xiang He. "Miss, do you still remember me?"

Xiang He nodded, "Of course I remember. You are the young master of the Wang family. I was wondering who else had come, but I didn't expect it to be young master Wang. I was impolite for not greeting you."

"Let's not talk about that," Wang Rongxing said, standing still and waiting for her for a while. "Have you hunted any wild game lately?"

“Young Master Meng took in a big cat last time and made some money to build a house, so he doesn’t have time to go into the mountains.”

"This young master is still waiting for your mountain produce."

"I'll definitely go when I have time."

The two walked side by side, talking. The person behind them was shocked and opened their mouth wide. They never expected that He Yatou knew Young Master Wang from the city. Now they had a lot more to talk about.

As the carriage and a group of people approached the fourth brother's house, a large crowd gathered again under the big tree where people usually chatted. The fourth aunt helped the third grandmother out and didn't forget to prepare some peanuts.

"Look at He girl, she's really something, she even knows the young master of the Wang family in the city."

Third Grandma took the peanuts and started peeling them. "The Wang family came to propose marriage today? Why are they so late?"

"Who knows? But could that young master Wang really be proposing marriage?"

At this moment, an older woman sat down next to him. "Those things just happened this morning, and Young Master Wang hasn't heard a word about it yet."

As the group was talking, Wang Rongxing, who was far away, didn't hear anything. Xiang He pulled Xiang Huiying to stand next to Fourth Aunt and just watched.

Wang Rongxing straightened his clothes, and his servant went up to knock on the door.

"Miss Xiang, my young master has come to propose marriage."

The words had barely left his lips when a commotion erupted. As the noise subsided, the chatter grew loud and chaotic. Wang Rongxing initially thought it was envy, but just as the door opened, he heard a voice—

"Someone actually wants those worn-out shoes?!"

One sentence shattered Wang Rongxing's pride, and his face suddenly darkened. "What were you saying, ma'am?"

The old woman from the neighboring village stammered, "N-nothing..."

This is bad news for ruining someone's marriage. The old woman quickly shrank into the crowd, but Wang Rongxing wouldn't let her off the hook. He looked at the next old woman and asked, "What were you saying just now? What 'broken shoe'? Who's the broken shoe?"

He believed his hearing was excellent and that he could never have misheard.

But none of the village women responded to him, so he looked directly at Xiang He and asked, "Girl, do you know anything?"

Xiang He shook his head. Before he could ask any more questions, someone grabbed his wrist and pulled him into the house. "Young Master Wang is here! Quick, come inside and talk!"

The newcomer was Xiang Daqiang, whose obsequious smile concealed his guilty conscience. "Young Master Wang, don't listen to their nonsense! It's all untrue. Come inside quickly."

Madam Yu also rushed out at this moment. Her fat body seemed to have become much thinner. She glared at Xiang He and hurriedly bowed to greet Wang Rongxing.

"Young Master Wang, let's talk inside. It's too noisy here."

Wang Rongxing was forcibly pulled away, and the servant hurriedly stepped forward to pull Xiang Daqiang's hand away, "Don't touch the young master!"

"Yes, yes, yes, it was the villain who broke the rules."

This family's obsequiousness is blatant; their behavior is truly unsightly.

Wang Rongxing's mind was still preoccupied with those words, and his previously cheerful face turned somber.

He roared, "Where's Lianhua? Call her out here and find out who this 'slut' is all about!"

The couple was startled, and Mrs. Yu waved her hands repeatedly, "They're talking nonsense! There are no 'broken shoes,' they're talking about someone else!"

"Then what are you afraid of? Who are they referring to as 'broken shoes'?"

Xiang Daqiang was extremely anxious, and so was Madam Yu. She glanced around haphazardly, her gaze landing on Xiang He. Suddenly, she pointed and exclaimed, "That's the slut I'm talking about! Yes, it's her!"

This random pointing left Xiang He completely bewildered; she pointed back at herself, "A...are you sure?"

She was so speechless she almost blurted out in English...

"You're talking nonsense!" Fourth Aunt couldn't stand seeing her being bullied, so she stood up and pointed back, "All you ever say is bullshit, ptooey!"

This caused an uproar, and everyone started cursing at Madam Yu. Madam Yu had no way to retaliate and could only grit her teeth and keep a sour face.

The gate to the fourth brother's house was wide open, and Xiang Lianhua, dressed in pink, ran out with a flushed face and an affected manner. "Rongxing, may I come in and talk to you?"

Upon seeing Xiang Lianhua's delicate appearance, Wang Rongxing's heart softened immediately, and his expression became much gentler. "Alright."

Amidst the commotion, Wang Rongxing strode towards the gate. Perhaps it was Yu's smug look that was too obvious, irritating one of them, or perhaps they simply couldn't bear to see Yu doing well, but they shouted at the top of their lungs—

"You can't even talk about your own 'old shoes'!"
