Reborn Spoiled Girl Tames the Regent
Chapter 21 Yuezhu Ridge
Cong Shuang counted on her fingers and shook her head, replying, "It'll be a few more days."
"This medicine can relieve heat and promote blood circulation. It can reduce heat when taken on a regular basis. However, women are already prone to heat before their period. If she develops heat symptoms, taking this medicine will only have the opposite effect."
"Then, what should we do? I saw that Miss's eyes were burning red just now."
Cong Shuang stamped her feet anxiously.
Xiao Hengzhi frowned and got up to walk outside.
"Young Master Xiao...!"
Before Cong Shuang could ask him where he was going, he disappeared into the night.
The thunder and rain outside showed no signs of abating.
Helpless, Cong Shuang knelt down next to Jiang Mian and kept wiping her hands and sweat.
In Moon Bamboo Ridge, Xiao Hengzhi held a knife and, taking advantage of the lightning flash, brought it down hard. Then, with the sound of rain, a green bamboo fell to the ground.
His face was covered in rain as he knelt on the ground, sawing off the bamboo nodes and splitting open the bamboo heart.
Then he rushed back as fast as he could and tossed the bamboo section to Cong Shuang.
"Set up a fire and burn the bamboo sap," he instructed.
Seeing that he was soaked, Cong Shuang glanced at the split bamboo on the ground and quickly realized that bamboo sap could relieve heat and clear the orifices, and could help the young lady relieve her fever!
She hurriedly went to get a charcoal brazier, lit it, and placed the bamboo sections on the perforated lid to roast them.
The charcoal brazier was hot, so she deliberately moved it to the doorway to keep her distance from Jiang Mian.
Xiao Hengzhi took off his wet clothes, wrung them out, and sat down on the edge of the bed wearing only an undergarment. He touched her forehead, which was still burning hot and constantly sweating. Her lips were also dry and wrinkled.
He poured a bowl of water and turned to Cong Shuang, asking, "Do you have any powdered sugar?"
"Have."
Cong Shuang took out some sugar powder from the box and gave it to him, asking, "What does Young Master Xiao need the sugar powder for?"
Xiao Hengzhi took out a packet and said, "When the Second Miss was sick, she liked to drink sweet things."
As he spoke, he poured powdered sugar into water to dissolve it, but he only poured in half of it.
Cong Shuang asked again, "Why not just empty the whole bag?"
He replied casually, "Too much sweetness can worsen her condition. It's alright, I only put in half each time, she can't taste the difference."
"Huh? When...?"
Xiao Hengzhi did not answer. Cong Shuang silently put the box back and went to burn the bamboo sap again.
She pursed her lips and began to think back, wondering if she hadn't been attentive enough before, how come she had never known these habits of her young lady?
Xiao Hengzhi took a spoon, scooped up a spoonful, and brought it to Jiang Mian's lips. He saw her lips move slightly as she murmured something.
He leaned closer and heard her whisper, "Ning Zhi..."
Xiao Hengzhi's grip on the spoon tightened suddenly, then he let out a long breath, a hint of displeasure rising in his heart.
"Even with her burned like this, she's still thinking about him..."
After saying that, he touched her face with one hand, his thumb pressed against his lips, silencing her.
"Forget it."
Jiang Mian touched his cold knuckles, and in her dazed state, she opened her mouth and gently bit them.
The warmth of their breaths mingled in his palms, and Xiao Hengzhi simply reached out his other hand to lift her face.
Perhaps finding the coolness of his hands comforting, Jiang Mian let out a soft groan, and her brows relaxed.
Hearing her soft humming, Xiao Hengzhi felt as if a kitten was scratching at his heart. He gently rubbed her earlobe, and couldn't help but cup her face, bringing it closer little by little.
I was so close I could feel her hot breath.
He smiled, their foreheads touched, and he gently brushed her nose against hers.
When Cong Shuang turned around, she happened to see this scene.
She turned slightly embarrassed and coughed lightly, "Young Master Xiao, the bamboo juice is ready."
Upon hearing this, Xiao Hengzhi's expression returned to normal. He released his hand and said calmly, "Give it to me."
Cong Shuang handed over the bamboo sap and saw him carefully feeding Jiang Mian little by little with a spoon.
She exclaimed, "Luckily I met Mr. Xiao, otherwise I wouldn't know what to do."
Xiao Heng fed Jiang Mian spoonful by spoonful, carefully holding her as she lay down.
I had just finished tidying up and hadn't even had a chance to tell Cong Shuang to take good care of it when I suddenly heard a faint eagle whistle mixed in with the sound of rain outside. It was almost impossible to hear unless you listened very carefully.
He went outside, and the cold wind, mixed with icy rain, hit him in the face. He looked around but there was no one there, only the rapid sound of rain hitting the ground.
Then, as if sensing something, he clicked his tongue softly.
He slightly raised his gaze and stared at the top of the sedan chair. Sure enough, amidst the wind and rain, he could vaguely see a blurry black figure crouching on it.
The rain pattered down.
He looked at the person on the roof of the sedan chair and asked leisurely, "What is it?"
Guiye pulled off the black veil covering his face and said calmly, "After pushing down a few trees, the soil on the mountain has become loose. This place is low-lying and not suitable for staying for long."
Xiao Hengzhi frowned, then nodded: "Understood."
He paused for a moment, then said, "Have you made any progress on what I asked you to find?"
Guiye shook his head: "I haven't had a chance to go yet, but I've seen it before, so it shouldn't take too much effort."
"Yes, this matter must not be known to others."
Guiye nodded, and after listening to him finish speaking, he disappeared into the darkness again.
Then Xiao Hengzhi strode into the house and said seriously, "Pack your things and let's go."
Cong Shuang asked in confusion, "What happened? It's pouring rain outside, and Miss is still asleep. Where are you going?"
"There is a risk of flash floods coming down here."
"What?!" Cong Shuang's eyes widened immediately.
Then, all that could be seen was Xiao Hengzhi quickly draping a cloak over Jiang Mian, wrapping her in a raincoat, and then carrying her out in his arms.
She paused for a moment, then hurriedly packed her bags and followed closely behind.
The rain intensified, and the wind howled.
Xiao Hengzhi quickened his pace, and Cong Shuang dared not relax, following closely behind. They hadn't walked far when a low, muffled thud came from behind, like a torrent of water rushing down a mountain.
"Young Master Xiao! Where are we going!" Cong Shuang shouted desperately, but her voice was muffled by the wind and rain.
Xiao Hengzhi remained silent. He had already explored the area several days prior and found a cave where he could take refuge. However, the night was dark and the rain was heavy, and the forest paths were chaotic and disorganized, so he could only rely on his memory and intuition to orient himself.
Perhaps it was the bumpy mountain road, but Jiang Mian seemed very uncomfortable. She frowned, coughed softly, and turned her head towards his chest.
Xiao Hengzhi tightened his grip on his arm and quickened his pace.
Finally, a clearing appeared in the distance, with the outline of a cave faintly visible.
He breathed a sigh of relief, calming his tense nerves for a moment.
Once inside the cave, they didn't stop for a moment. They gathered some dry leaves and started two fires. The cave was cold and dark, but fortunately, the terrain was sloping, so there was no rain or wild animals.
When Cong Shuang set up a stick to dry her clothes, she noticed that she and Xiao Hengzhi were both soaked, but the young lady was dry and only had a few strands of hair wet.
She used to think that Xiao Heng's family background was inferior and he was not good enough for Jiang Mian, but seeing him today, she realized that he really cared about the young lady.
Jiang Mian leaned against the haystack covered with a velvet blanket, raising her hand every now and then as if she wanted to speak, but she would only move her lips and then lower her hand again, as if it was extremely difficult.
Xiao Hengzhi held her hand, looking at her pale face, his heart aching as if it were being stabbed with a knife.
He regretted it; he regretted letting Guiye steal the horse.
Otherwise, with such heavy rain, she would already be resting in the inn, but now she has to take shelter in this cave.
He just wants to see Ning Zhi, right? Let him see her. At worst, he can just snatch her back.
He anxiously stroked her cheek, his eyes filled with worry.
