Train Survival: You're really trying to survive!
Chapter 6: If I Can't Open a Water Purifier, I'll Make One Myself
Su Li is a high school senior who has just graduated. For many people, this period is when they have accumulated the most knowledge in their lives.
Sitting cross-legged on the gradually heating iron floor, Su Li drew upon her knowledge and began to think of a way to break the deadlock.
"I have water in my hands now, but it's all dirty water that's undrinkable. What I need to do is not to get water from somewhere else, but to turn the dirty water in my hands into clean water, no, into drinkable water."
Purify the water to make it drinkable.
"I've done some similar questions on chemistry and physics exams."
"First, we need to treat the raw water to remove some easily removable impurities."
That is, things like suspended matter in the water.
Zurich's first thought was to use charcoal for filtration.
Luckily, I had some charcoal on hand.
Then he thought of another problem: the water, even after being filtered once, still didn't feel safe, as some water-soluble toxins and carbon seemed unable to be adsorbed.
We still need to think of a solution.
"After filtration, the water needs to be purified a second time. I can think of two methods right now. One is to use capillary action to purify the water."
This is knowledge I learned while doing high school physics exams.
"There is another way, which is to make distilled water."
Zurich recalled the distillation methods he had seen before.
How about setting up a fire to boil water and let it condense? But I don't have a pot or anything that can heat things up, so it's a bit of a hassle.
Is it like Bear Grylls' survival on a desert island, digging a hole in the ground, then covering the hole with something to collect condensation?
This method is too inefficient. He also doesn't have anything good to use as a lid.
Most importantly, he needed to move the train to collect supplies, so he couldn't just run around like that.
"Is it not going to work?" Su Li racked his brains, painfully pulling at his hair. As he pulled, a sudden idea struck him. "I'm overthinking it. Let's simplify it."
"Distilled water is made by heating wastewater with a heat source and then using a device that allows the water vapor to condense."
"The heat source, this scorching sun, is the best heat source."
The outdoor temperature should be 38 degrees Celsius now, and it's only 10 o'clock. The temperature will continue to rise until 1 p.m.
Zurich had experience; under such a scorching sun, a basin of water could be reduced to half its original volume in just one afternoon. This kind of sun was more than enough to serve as a heat source.
Su Li laid out all his props, sat in the train, and watched them ponder. When he saw two plastic bottles, he suddenly had a flash of inspiration.
He picked up a bottle and placed it on the ground, then picked up another bottle and placed it on top of the first bottle, forming an acute angle.
Su Li's eyes lit up.
He opened the manual, entered keywords, and searched.
[1 empty plastic bottle - 2 twigs]
[1 empty plastic bottle - 2 stones]
[Empty plastic bottle * 1 - 200ml drinking water]
[Empty plastic bottle *1 - Drinking water *1]
Zuli discovered many trades posted online. Now, each person essentially has two plastic bottles, and many people are willing to take one out for trading.
Su Li glanced around and saw that everyone was basically looking to buy materials for the initial train enhancement plugin, especially iron ingots. Su Li noticed that Lin Feng, whom he considered the protagonist, was also buying them, but he was also acquiring various elemental fragments. He wondered what Lin Feng was planning to do with them.
After considering it for a moment, Su Li felt that wood was easier to obtain than stone. So she put it up for trading in the shop.
[Wood*1 - Empty Plastic Bottle*1] x22
Then Su Li got busy.
He first made a stone shovel, and after that, he went outside to dig up the soil.
The surface of the soil in this saline-alkali land is covered with a hardened crust; once dug out, you'll find yellow soil underneath.
Digging the soil wasn't difficult, and in no time, Su Li had dug up quite a bit. He carried all of this soil into his train.
Then start mixing the mud.
This is not a game; it's a very important job.
He has memorized all the available crafting tables by heart and has planned a construction route.
He wanted to enter the Iron Age, which required a furnace for smelting iron ore.
The smelting furnace is listed in the synthesis table.
Simple melting furnace
Stone*10, Bricks*50, Soil*10, Water*2 liters
Besides being fired in a kiln, bricks can also be dried in the sun to make sun-dried bricks, or adobe bricks.
Su Li chopped up the weeds and mixed them with salt water and yellow mud. He wasn't sure if he was doing it right, but in his memory, this was how bricks were made, and the steps seemed pretty much the same.
After finishing, he shaped the clay into bricks the size he remembered. Then he placed them inside the carriage.
After carrying four buckets of water, Su Li was exhausted. While taking a break, she opened the manual.
Fortunately, the wood listed in the manual had already sold out, and Zuli had 22 empty plastic bottles left.
"Next, we need to turn these plastic bottles into suitable water purifiers."
Zurich first used a stone axe to split one of them in half.
Then he tore his t-shirt. His school uniform t-shirt was long, and tearing off a small section made it about the same length as a regular t-shirt.
The school uniforms are made of pure cotton, which can be used to filter this dirty water.
Su Li turned the split plastic bottle upside down, placed the section with the bottle opening inside, lined it with cotton cloth, and then took out the charcoal she had obtained from the treasure chest.
After crushing the charcoal into powder, place it on a cotton cloth, then cover it with another layer of cotton cloth, then another layer of charcoal, and finally another layer of cotton cloth.
In this way, a simple filter device is completed.
Zuli used the remaining half of the bucket to pour the water from the wooden barrel into the filtration device.
The water was slowly filtered into the wooden bucket, and it took some time to filter out half a bucket of water.
At this time, the temperature was getting hotter and hotter. Su Li would wipe the sweat from his head from time to time. He didn't mind the dirt and would lick the sweat off, as it was all precious salt and moisture.
After filtering was complete, Su Li took out a match and lit some weeds.
Then they lit a wooden branch with weeds. The branches in the system were all treated, dry, and easy to ignite.
Finally, using a still-burning twig, a hole was burned into the water bottle near the opening. This was repeated for 10 water bottles.
After processing was complete, Zuli extinguished the fire and began filling another 10 intact mineral water bottles with the filtered saline solution.
After assembling the bottle, Su Li picked up the mineral water bottle with the hole pre-stamped and then aligned the hole with the opening of the mineral water bottle filled with filtered water.
In this way, a simple distillation apparatus is completed. This apparatus is like an acute angle.
Next, simply place this device in the sun. The scorching sun will evaporate the red water at the bottom, and the water vapor will flow through the joint between the two bottles into the upper bottle, where it will then condense and remain.
Su Li didn't know how efficient this thing was, but the principle was correct; it was just a matter of how efficient it was.
Zurich arranged the 10 devices, then took out the reflective foil left over from eating earlier and used it to reflect the sunlight onto the mineral water bottles.
Meanwhile, in order to improve efficiency, Zurich added some carbon powder to the water to increase its heat absorption capacity.
Finally, Zuli started bustling around, taking the finished, wet mud bricks and placing them all on the stones outside to dry in the sun.
Anyway, these two days are a safe period, no animals will attack, so there's no fear of any unexpected situations where we have to run away before we can pack up.
After finishing all this, Su Li checked the time; it was 12 o'clock.
At this moment, even the wind blowing in from outside was scalding hot. This reminded Su Li of the air fryer she used to use.
"Well, now I've become fried chicken!"
