The first month of the lunar calendar has passed, and before we know it, it's the fourth day of the second month, another small market day.

These past few days, Xu Zhuzhu's family hasn't gone anywhere. Zhang He and Xu Wenjie have been busy taking care of the wasteland behind them during the day, and the four of them go to the garbage station to sort garbage at night.

The hoes and sickles used to cultivate the wasteland were bought from the blacksmith in town.

Zhang He then asked Hu San Niang for some scallions and cabbage seedlings, which she planted in the open space next to the outhouse behind the house.

While Zhang He was planting cabbage, Xu Zhuzhu suddenly remembered that two months ago, she and her brother had brought back two bags of sprouted potatoes from the garbage station.

Because of the heavy snow and cold weather, the potato sprouts were all frozen when they arrived here. They didn't grow any longer, and the sprouts were all gone.

It's gotten warmer these past few days, and the potato sprouts have come out again.

So Xu Zhuzhu called to Xu An, dragged a bag of potatoes, and hurriedly suggested to Zhang He that they should plant the potatoes as soon as possible, and they could harvest them in a few months.

Especially since Yagutan was originally a mudflat with sandy soil, the potatoes grown there are sure to be large and delicious.

Seeing that it was only early February and the weather was still a bit cold, Zhang He said, "Just keep it by the stove and plant it when spring comes. I'm afraid it won't grow if we plant it now."

After hearing this, Xu Zhuzhu thought for a moment and agreed with her mother's point of view, since she was not as professional as her mother when it came to farming.

The vegetables brought back from the garbage station these past few days were mostly cabbage and lettuce, some of which still had roots. Zhang He thought about it and figured that her family couldn't eat them all so quickly, so she marked out a plot of land in the backyard and planted all the lettuce that could be grown.

It was watered with the pure, natural fertilizer from the neighbor's outhouse.

Whether we live or die is up to fate.

There's been a bit more recyclable waste these past few days. In just three days, the recyclable waste bins have accumulated quite a few points, bringing the total to 3879 points.

As for the small market on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, Zhang He thought that since the two hundred dumplings she sold last time had all been sold out in one morning, using half a bag of flour, if they sold more, they might be able to earn more. So she asked Xu Zhuzhu to help her exchange another 50 jin of flour.

The family of four stayed home on the third day of the Lunar New Year and spent the whole day making dumplings, a total of 500.

On this day, Xiao Ji and his family carried two large baskets and a large backpack, heading to town early in the morning.

Having learned from their previous two experiences, Zhang He and the others were more skilled this time and quickly completed the preparations.

As usual, Xu Wenjie helped Grandma Mi and her husband set up their stall. Grandma Mi then brought up the incident where Zhang He secretly asked Xu Zhuzhu to give her money at the last market.

“That’s only right.” Xu Wenjie ignored the dissatisfaction in Granny Mi’s eyes and replied with a gentle smile.

He wasn't present at the time, but his wife explained it to him afterwards, and he agreed.

To everyone's surprise, upon hearing this, Granny Mi's usual smiling face vanished, replaced by a cold glare as she angrily retorted, "You're getting too distant, aren't you? If your stall is busy today, I certainly wouldn't dare bring it over to cook for you..."

Zhang He, who was standing nearby, knew that Grandma Mi wasn't really angry, so she pushed the two children over and started throwing a tantrum.

Xu Zhuzhu snuggled directly into Grandma Mi's arms, saying, "If Grandma won't accept it, I dare not eat Grandma's rice noodles anymore."

Xu An, unable to act coquettishly, echoed Xu Zhuzhu's words, "Sister is right. If Grandma doesn't accept it, I won't eat Grandma's rice noodles either."

Despite his small stature, he speaks in a very serious and methodical manner.

Grandma Mi had no resistance to children. Upon seeing the two children's adorable appearance, she was quickly won over and finally gave in.

With a helpless sigh, she said, "Oh well, I'll just save it to buy snacks for the two kids!"

Zhang He smiled along with her and then presented a basket of dumplings that she had specially made for Grandma Mi.

Grandma Mi was conflicted, but her smile deepened.

……

The number one customer was still Hei Tie from the blacksmith shop. Xu Zhuzhu looked at his dark face, under which were a pair of shrewd and capable eyes.

She suddenly realized that this person was just a blacksmith, which was a pity.

When they bought hoes and sickles, Black Iron gave them a big discount, so Zhang He gave them an extra Black Iron as a gift.

"Thank you."

Hei Tie took it, his tone calm and his expression normal, which made Xu Zhuzhu and the others secretly marvel.

Hei Tie took the rice noodles and went to Grandma Mi's house for rice noodles as usual. Xu Zhuzhu's stall welcomed its second customer - Mr. Wu, the owner of the bookstore.

When Xu Wenjie delivered dumplings last time, Mr. Wu learned from Xu Wenjie that Xu Wenjie's family was now selling food at a stall, so he came looking for them early in the morning.

That thing called dumplings, although it looks small and delicate, is just made of flour, nothing special. I guess it tastes like steamed buns or something.

But to his surprise, after cooking two himself that night and tasting them, his cravings were instantly awakened.

So I came to Xiaoji early today to find Xu Wenjie's family.

After crossing most of the street, we finally found the location of Xu Wenjie's family.

Looking out, Mr. Wu saw Xu Wenjie, dressed in an old long gown, busy at a stall, with a young woman and two young children beside him.

Presumably, over there are Xu Wenjie's wife and two children.

"Brother Xu, may your business prosper!"

Mr. Wu greeted him warmly, bowing respectfully as he approached.

"Brother Wu! What a rare guest!"

Xu Wenjie was overjoyed to see Mr. Wu and hurriedly went forward to greet him and invite him to sit down.

Then, he solemnly introduced Mr. Wu to Zhang He and her two children, who all greeted him.

Mr. Wu praised He Wen for being virtuous and capable, and also praised the two children for being well-behaved and adorable.

They were all flowery, flattering words, but Mr. Wu's tone was very sincere, and the words didn't sound awkward coming from his mouth; on the contrary, they seemed very natural.

Xu Zhuzhu listened to Mr. Wu and her father's conversation, suppressing her laughter, but she couldn't help it inside.

She ran off to play at Grandma Mi's stall.

Grandma Mi had lived in the town for a long time, and naturally she knew Mr. Wu. However, neither she nor Grandpa Mi could read, so they weren't very familiar with Mr. Wu. It was quite strange to see Xu Wenjie chatting so fluently with Mr. Wu.

"Zhuzhu, your family knows Mr. Wu, the owner of the bookstore?"

Before Xu Zhuzhu could answer, Old Man Mi stroked his beard, smiled slightly, and said confidently, "They are probably relatives that Master Xu has come to seek refuge with."

Grandma Mi didn't even bother to turn around. She gave Grandpa Mi a dismissive look and said disdainfully, "I told you, old man, you're getting more and more confused as you get older, and you still argue with me. Since your relatives are in town, why did Mr. Xu move to Old Duck Village again?"

Old Man Mi thought about it and realized he was right. He was speechless for a long time, but he grunted and went back to tending the fire with his beard twitching.

Xu Zhuzhu laughed heartily as she watched.

Grandma Mi then pulled Xu Zhuzhu to sit down, cooked her a small bowl of rice noodles, and carefully blew on the noodles, reminding her, "Be careful, it's hot!"

Xu Wenjie never mentioned that he had passed the imperial examination, and his family never showed off. So, Grandma Mi naturally didn't know that her father could compose poems and paint.

So even though Granny Mi thought Xu Wenjie's actions were very logical, she could only guess that before coming from the north, Xu Wenjie probably did some business or worked as a shop assistant.

Now I'm wondering why.

Xu Zhuzhu slurped up a mouthful of rice noodles, her eyes crinkling with happiness as she praised, "Grandma's rice noodles are so delicious!"

Then, in a childish voice, she explained the reason: "Daddy borrowed some things from Mr. Wu last time, and Mommy asked Daddy to send some dumplings as a thank-you gift."

It turned out to be the case.

Grandma Mi understood, pinched Xu Zhuzhu's increasingly round face, and said with a smile, "Eat slowly, why don't you call your brother over to eat too?"

However, her brother was following behind her father, listening attentively to her father's conversation with Mr. Wu. This was probably her father's way of teaching her.

Xu Zhuzhu didn't call out; her brother was busy studying.
