Go back to the past to plant trees
Chapter 29 Scrap Collection Station
The next morning, Feng Cheng rode his horse, packed his things, and prepared to go up to the dam.
The streets of the county town were crowded with pedestrians, so Feng Cheng slowed down and walked towards the outskirts of the town.
"I wonder how much this can sell for?"
"It should be worth a lot of money. It's made of copper, like a bullet casing. I heard someone sold half a pound of it last time for 1 cents."
"I don't need that much, five cents will do. If it's really that valuable, we can go pick it up later."
Suddenly, he heard a soft murmur of conversation. Feng Cheng turned around and saw three children chatting with their heads down.
Feng Cheng pondered for a moment, but before he could come to his senses, the three children turned into an alley.
Feng Cheng immediately reined in his horse and walked towards the alley where the three children had disappeared.
"Buying station..."
After walking into the alley for a short while, Feng Cheng saw a large wooden sign standing at the entrance, and the children from earlier were chatting with an old man in the courtyard. Judging from their expressions, they were very happy.
Looking at the place in front of him, Feng Cheng suddenly had some ideas.
He dismounted and led his horse into the courtyard.
"Hey, hey, hey... what are you doing here? You can't bring a horse in here."
Just as Feng Cheng was about to go in, Kantou, who had been chatting with the children, suddenly called out to him.
"Uncle, it's like this, I'm from the Forestry Bureau. I heard that you buy old books and newspapers here, so I thought I'd come and see if I could find a few of the books I'm looking for."
This was the excuse Feng Cheng had just come up with. Of course, it wasn't really an excuse; he genuinely wanted to go in and see if there were any books he could buy. Bashang was just too boring. If he could find a few books to read, that would be good, no matter what kind.
Although he borrowed professional books on planting, reading too much of that stuff was tiring, and Feng Cheng wanted to read something else to refresh his mind.
Of course, he also had another idea: to see if there were any treasures to be found in this scrap shop. He had always heard online that scrap yards in this era were treasure troves, with all sorts of treasures. Someone had bought a small item here, which would be worth millions or tens of millions in later generations.
Feng Cheng knew nothing about antiques, but that didn't stop him from coming to take a look. There was no harm in looking anyway, and what if he was really lucky and stumbled upon some treasure?
You have to believe in your luck, right?
"Go away, go away! This is a scrap metal recycling station, not a used bookstore. If you want to buy books, go to Xinhua Bookstore," the old man said, waving him away immediately upon hearing Feng Cheng's words.
"Uncle, there's no Xinhua Bookstore in the county, you can only find it in the district. If I could find the book here, I wouldn't be here, right?"
Feng Cheng spoke respectfully, completely ignoring the old man's earlier attempt to drive him away.
Upon hearing this, the old man sized Feng Cheng up and down, then asked, "Are you really from the Forestry Bureau?"
Feng Cheng assured him, "Absolutely. My name is Feng Cheng. I came here last year. If you don't believe me, you can ask the Forestry Bureau, or I can go back and get a letter of introduction."
Upon hearing that Feng Cheng was going back to get a letter of introduction, the old man's expression softened immediately. Someone who could say such a thing was probably not a liar.
"I have a lot of old books and newspapers here, but they are in very poor condition, so I may not be able to find the book you are looking for."
"Let's take a look first, maybe we'll find something suitable."
"Alright, come in," the old man said, glancing at the pile of things tied to Feng Cheng's horse. "Bring the horse in too!"
It was only after seeing this horse that the old man let Feng Cheng in. People these days judge others by their appearance. Feng Cheng was young, clean-cut, and riding such a big horse. To outsiders, he must either be from a wealthy family or work for a good company.
Upon hearing this, Feng Cheng quickly led his horse into the courtyard, tied the reins, and followed the old man into a room in the courtyard.
"This room is full of old books. You can take a look, and then come to my place to weigh them."
Feng Cheng's eyes lit up instantly when he saw the room full of old books.
Although they are all old and tattered books, with such a large quantity, surely you can pick out a few that are readable!
"Thank you, uncle."
Feng Cheng thanked him and then went inside.
Upon closer inspection, although there were many books inside, most of them were wrapped up, and most of them were old newspapers or similar items.
Feng Cheng picked up some unbandaged books from the side and casually started reading. One of them was a copy of Water Margin, printed vertically in traditional Chinese characters. He flipped through the contents and saw that the printing was poor, many characters were unclear, and the paper was of very poor quality. It was obviously a pirated copy.
Feng Cheng picked up another book in good condition, a high school chemistry textbook, but it was from before the founding of the People's Republic of China.
Feng Cheng casually put it aside and continued flipping through it.
Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, The Legend of the Swordsmen of Shu Mountain, are textbooks for elementary and middle school students.
There are also some Japanese books, Russian books, and English books.
Feng Cheng browsed for a while but couldn't find anything worth reading. There were a few novels, but they were all standalone volumes without a prequel or sequel, so Feng Cheng wasn't interested. Mainly, he had read too many novels in his previous life, and it was difficult for him to get into novels from this era.
Moreover, the books here are all from the Republican era; there are none from before that period, let alone ancient books.
Feng Cheng spent half an hour choosing, but eventually gave up, thinking, "Looks like I'm destined never to make a fortune!"
However, Feng Cheng didn't care about that. He had only come here on a whim. Although he dreamed of getting rich, to be honest, he didn't know anything about antiques. The ones he had just handled might be worth millions, but since he didn't know anything about them, he just threw them away.
With that thought in mind, Feng Cheng gave up the idea of looking for antiques and started looking through some books that would be useful to him.
After looking around, he found several local county gazetteers, a Republican-era edition of the "Compendium of Materia Medica," and two comic-book-like versions of Journey to the West. Feng Cheng hadn't expected that there would be comic-book-like books in the Republican era.
After spending nearly an hour choosing, Feng Cheng lost interest and was about to leave.
But just as he was about to leave, he suddenly saw a large stack of envelopes behind the door. Feng Cheng went closer and took a look. They were mails piled up at the county post office, with no recipients in sight.
Feng Cheng wasn't interested in the emails themselves; what interested him was the stamp on the email.
Even if he knew nothing about collecting, Feng Cheng knew the value of stamps, especially the monkey stamp that had been mentioned many times online, to the point that everyone knew about it.
Even if Feng Cheng knew nothing about collecting, he knew that the Monkey stamp was valuable, but he didn't know about the other stamps.
Never mind, I'll just buy it first. Anyway, this thing is just waste paper and worthless. Besides, if I buy the envelope, scratch off the stamp, and then sell the envelope back, wouldn't I get a stamp for free?
With that in mind, Feng Cheng took the two stacks of envelopes out.
"Uncle, I'd like this."
"You want this envelope too?"
The old man saw Feng Cheng carrying two stacks of envelopes and asked with a puzzled look, "..."
"I don't want the envelope, I want the stamp on it, sir. I'm a stamp collector, I love collecting stamps."
"Stamp collecting? Collecting stamps?"
The old man looked at Feng Cheng's two stacks of envelopes again, somewhat puzzled by his thinking. In his opinion, these stamps were already used and could not be used again. Moreover, these things cannot be eaten or drunk, so why collect them?
The old man had worked at the scrap metal yard for several years, and people often came here to hunt for treasures. He bought all sorts of things, but this was the first time someone had bought an envelope.
However, the old man had seen many strange people and was immune to their strange hobbies, so when Feng Cheng said he liked stamp collecting, the old man was only slightly surprised.
After weighing the emails and books and giving the old man two cents, Feng Cheng left.
