Rebirth in Another World: The Ultimate Legend

Chapter 28 Spending the Night in the Wilderness

After successfully crossing the river, the group continued their arduous journey along the rugged road. However, night fell like a giant black curtain, slowly enveloping the land, forcing them to find a suitable place to camp.

The surrounding area was a vast and desolate wilderness, with weeds growing wildly, reaching knee-high, and trees scattered sparsely, resembling silent giants in the night. Lin Yu led everyone to stop in a relatively flat and sheltered spot.

"Let's rest here. Everyone, be careful and on guard," Lin Yu said solemnly, his voice sounding somewhat ethereal in the vast wilderness.

Everyone immediately sprang into action; some began setting up makeshift tents, while others busied themselves collecting firewood to start a fire.

Zhao Ling'er sat on a rock, her arms tightly wrapped around her knees, her gaze fixed blankly into the distance. Her hair was disheveled by the wind, and her delicate face was filled with exhaustion, appearing even more haggard in the dim moonlight. "Brother Lin Yu, this wilderness fills me with inexplicable fear, as if countless eyes are watching us in the darkness." Her voice trembled slightly, revealing a deep unease within her.

As Lin Feng painstakingly reinforced the tent with thick tree branches, he shouted, "Don't be afraid, Ling'er, we're here! There are so many of us, we're not afraid of anything!" His forehead was covered with large beads of sweat, which slid down his cheeks and dripped into the ground beneath his feet, but his hands never stopped moving.

Old Wang sat by the campfire, skillfully manipulating the firewood, muttering, "This fire has to burn brightly, so it can keep us warm and scare away wild animals." His eyes were focused and determined, as if the campfire was their beacon of hope in this wilderness.

Little Flower huddled inside the tent, only her head peeking out, her eyes filled with terror. "I...I feel like something's getting closer," she whispered, her voice barely audible and trembling.

Hearing the sound, Lin Yu walked to her side, gently patted her shoulder, and comforted her, "Xiao Hua, don't be afraid. I'm here to protect you. I won't let anything hurt anyone."

Lin Yu walked up to Zhao Ling'er, squatted down, looked at her with gentle yet firm eyes, and said softly, "Ling'er, don't be afraid. Think about it, we've been through so much together, and every time we've survived, we've made it through safely. This wilderness may look scary, but as long as our hearts are together, nothing can defeat us. Believe me, I will always be by your side to protect you."

Tears welled up in Zhao Ling'er's eyes, and she nodded: "Brother Lin Yu, with you here, I feel much more at ease."

The flames leaped in the campfire, illuminating the tense and slightly weary faces of the group. The wind rustled through the grass, like the whispers of ghosts in the night.

Lin Yu and Lin Feng worked together to drive the tent stakes deep into the ground, each effort accompanied by heavy breathing and low groans.

Suddenly, a night owl let out a mournful cry from a tree not far away, piercing the silent night sky and startling everyone.

Zhao Ling'er instantly gripped Lin Yu's clothes, her body trembling slightly involuntarily, and said in a tearful voice, "Brother Lin Yu, that scream is so scary, I'm so frightened."

Lin Yu quickly pulled Zhao Ling'er into his arms, gently patted her back, and said, "Ling'er, don't be afraid, don't be afraid. This is just the call of a night owl. It won't dare to come near us."

Lin Feng threw another piece of firewood into the campfire, sparks flying everywhere. He shouted, "Everyone, take this time to rest and recharge. We still have a long journey ahead tomorrow, and there are even more arduous tasks waiting for us."

Zhao Ling'er said worriedly, "Will I be able to sleep well tonight? I don't feel at ease."

Old Wang chuckled and said, "Kid, don't worry. With so many of us together, we can look out for each other. There's nothing to be afraid of. As long as we're united, we can overcome any difficulty."

Night deepened, and all around was silent, save for the occasional chirping of insects and the soft rustling of leaves in the wind. Lin Yu stood guard at the front, his eyes as sharp as a hawk's, watching every movement in the darkness. The sword in his hand gleamed coldly in the moonlight, ready to be drawn at any moment.

Suddenly, a strong gust of wind blew past, and a rapid rustling sound came from the grass, even more intense than before. Lin Yu gripped his sword tightly, his heart pounding instantly. He cautiously walked towards the direction of the sound, each step as light as a cat's paw. Upon closer inspection, he saw a plump wild rabbit dart out of the grass and vanish into the darkness in an instant. Only then did Lin Yu breathe a sigh of relief.

When it was Lin Feng's turn to keep watch, he tried his best to stay alert, not daring to slack off in the slightest. He kept thinking to himself, "I can't let anything go wrong. Everyone's lives are in my hands. I must protect everyone."

Just when Lin Feng was about to give up and his eyelids were drooping, the first rays of dawn finally appeared, bringing a glimmer of hope and warmth to this desolate place.

After everyone woke up, they ate some dry rations and began a new journey.
