Chapter 28 Visiting the Village Head
After finishing her conversation with Gu Xiao, Nie Qianqian went into the east room. Tuantuan was already fast asleep, and her even breathing could be heard. He was a restless sleeper, sprawled out on his back, having kicked off half of the blanket. Nie Qianqian covered him with the blanket and got into bed.
As soon as Liu Yan got into bed, she turned over, and Nie Qianqian whispered, "Mom, did I wake you up?"
Liu Yan shook her head: "No, I haven't been able to sleep at all."
Nie Qianqian guessed that Liu Yan was still thinking about the divorce that morning, so she comforted her, "Mother, it's all in the past, don't think about it anymore, go to sleep."
Liu Yan called out, "Qianqian."
Qianqian: "What's wrong, Mother?"
Liu Yan hesitated, the words swirling in her throat before she swallowed them back.
After putting Tuantuan to sleep, she kept thinking about that matter. Now that she had completely severed ties with the Nie family, she wondered if she should tell Qianqian. But she was also afraid of how Qianqian would react if she told her.
Liu Yan was torn internally, but in the end she said nothing. "It's okay, go to sleep."
Nie Qianqian covered herself with the blanket, and soon drowsiness came over her. She drifted off to sleep, and in her half-awake state, she felt Liu Yan tossing and turning and faintly heard her sighing.
The next day, Liu Yan and Nie Qianqian both woke up early.
As usual, Nie Qianqian first drank a cup of iced coffee, then exercised her body, trained her mind, and practiced her moves.
After returning home, she cooked with Liu Yan.
Liu Yan was making breakfast for her family. In the past, she would cook whatever was left at home, as long as it filled their stomachs. This morning, however, Liu Yan looked at the food piled up in the kitchen and felt at a loss, experiencing a sweet kind of trouble.
Liu Yan finally chose to make wontons. The wontons were no longer filled with just wild vegetable leaves, but with minced pork and cabbage, mixed with lard. The filling alone was fragrant.
After wrapping the wontons, I set them aside to cook later. I also took out some garlic sprouts and stir-fried some eggs with them, along with some pickled vegetables, for breakfast.
Nie Qianqian was making lunch for Gu Xiao. Yesterday, she had kept her promise to cook for Gu Xiao in mind. In the past, when Gu Xiao went to the library to copy books, he would bring hard and dry coarse flour pancakes from home, which were never enough to fill his stomach. She couldn't keep doing that in the future.
He was already in poor health and was malnourished from not eating enough, so his recovery would be very slow if his hand ailment were treated.
Nie Qianqian cleaned the grass carp she brought back yesterday, sliced it into thin slices, and marinated it in soy sauce, oyster sauce, cooking wine, and cornstarch for a while.
She had already removed the packaging from these soy sauces, oyster sauces, and cooking wines, packed them into small earthenware jars, and told Liu Yan that she bought them from a merchant from the provincial capital.
Liu Yan was extremely fond of these seasonings; last night she touched all the bottles and jars, smelling and tasting them.
After marinating, heat oil in a pan and fry the fish head and bones until fragrant. Then add water, pickled cabbage, fish, wood ear mushrooms, bean sprouts, etc., and bring to a boil. Finally, remove from heat.
After finishing her own dishes, Liu Yan watched Nie Qianqian cook with rapt attention. She was interested in it and observed carefully. After Nie Qianqian cooked it once, she learned how to do it.
Liu Yan's mouth watered at the tangy aroma wafting from the pickled fish. She clicked her tongue in amazement, "Qianqian, how did you come up with these cooking methods? Are these yellow leaves cabbage? Why do they taste and color different from regular cabbage?"
Nie Qianqian: "This is pickled cabbage, made by pickling cabbage. It's sour and very fragrant. The way to cook this fish was told to me by the aunt who sells pickled cabbage."
Besides the sauerkraut fish, Nie Qianqian also made sweet potato pancakes and stir-fried refreshing green vegetables, a balanced meal of meat and vegetables. After finishing all the dishes, she kept them warm in the pot.
Liu Yan brought breakfast to the table and called Tuantuan and Gu Xiao to eat together. At the table, Liu Yan asked, "Qianqian, are you going to Jishetang today?"
Nie Qianqian shook her head. She had discussed it with Zhang Zhongjing yesterday. There was an elderly person and a child at home who needed care, so she wouldn't go every day, but only once every two or three days.
Nie Qianqian: "After we finish eating, I'll go visit the village head. The old house is uninhabitable in winter. I still have a lot of money left from selling Ganoderma lucidum last time. I want to build a new house. I'll ask the village head to help me arrange it."
Liu Yan had been worried about housing since the first day she moved into the old house. Now that she had money, she could build a new house and wouldn't have to worry about getting through the winter. This money was something she had to spend.
After finishing breakfast, Gu Xiao packed his things and prepared to go to town to copy books. With the oxcart, he could drive it back and forth to town every day, and then teach Tuantuan to read in the evenings.
Gu Xiao was stopped by Nie Qianqian as he boarded the oxcart, watching as she placed a three-tiered food box on it.
"Have the library's kitchen heat up your lunch at noon. Don't eat it cold; it's bad for your stomach."
Smelling the faint aroma wafting from the food box, Gu Xiao asked incredulously, "For me? Did you make this?"
Nie Qianqian: "Of course, didn't I promise you yesterday that I would cook for you?"
Looking at the food box and Nie Qianqian's bright smile, Gu Xiao felt as if parched land had been touched by a gentle drizzle. After a long silence, he replied, "Thank you."
Nie Qianqian waved her hand dismissively and reminded him, "Be careful on the road."
After seeing Gu Xiao off, Nie Qianqian cut 3 jin of pork, scooped up a bag of white rice, and set off for the village head's house.
The villagers are honest and kind; when it comes to gifts, nothing is more appreciated than pork, rice, and flour.
The village head's house was located relatively close to the center of the village, and it was one of the few large houses with blue bricks and tiles in the village. The courtyard was large, surrounded by a brick wall, and the gate was tall and imposing with thick wooden planks.
Nie Qianqian knocked on the door, and soon someone answered. It was Liu Lizheng's wife, Old Mrs. Zhao. Old Mrs. Zhao was about the same age as Old Mrs. Nie, but she looked much younger. She was a bit plump, with a round face, and looked like a kind person.
When Grandma Zhao saw that it was the girl from the Nie family, she was slightly taken aback, then greeted her with a big smile, "Oh, it's Qianqian, come in, come in."
Nie Qianqian walked in. The courtyard was very clean and tidy. There were neatly stacked firewood on one side and some corn cobs harvested in the fall on the other side. The house was very large. There were several main rooms and master bedrooms facing south, as well as several side rooms on the east and west sides, and a room specifically for storing miscellaneous items.
Liu Lizheng's family is large, with four sons, all of whom are married. The village head and his wife have had grandchildren for a long time. The eldest son's granddaughter, Liu Fang, is two years younger than Nie Qianqian and is not yet married. The youngest son's grandson is only about five years old and is named Liu Xiaogang.
At that moment, Xiao Gang was playing in the yard. When he saw Nie Qianqian come in, he wasn't shy at all. He looked at Nie Qianqian with his big, dark eyes.
Because of Tuantuan, Nie Qianqian took a liking to children of similar age. She took out a few White Rabbit milk candies from her space, removed the outer packaging, and handed them to Xiaogang, saying, "Xiaogang, here, have some candy."
Xiao Gang's eyes lit up, and he ran over, but instead of grabbing it directly, he hesitated and looked at Grandma Zhao.
Grandma Zhao smiled indulgently and nodded, "Take it if you want it, and thank your sister Qianqian."
Xiao Gang was overjoyed. He reached out and picked up the candy, giving Nie Qianqian a sweet smile. "Thank you, Sister Qianqian. Sister Qianqian is so beautiful."
Grandma Zhao and Nie Qianqian both laughed. Grandma Zhao jokingly scolded, "You little rascal, you haven't even had any candy yet, and you're already so sweet-talking."
Xiao Gang looked up and said, "Xiao Gang isn't just being sweet-talking; he's stating the facts."
This Sister Qianqian is indeed the most beautiful sister he has ever seen, like a fairy descended from heaven.
Grandma Zhao smiled and said, "Qianqian, don't mind him. Come find your village headman. Come in quickly, he's sitting in the main room."
Liu Lizheng was sitting in the middle of the main room, puffing on his pipe. When he saw Nie Qianqian, he quickly stubbed out his pipe, stood up, and said, "Qianqian, you're here."
It was only during the divorce proceedings that he learned that Qianqian was actually acquainted with the county magistrate. With this connection, how could he dare to underestimate Nie Qianqian?
Nie Qianqian smiled and said, "Grandpa Village Head, thanks to your help in upholding justice in the divorce case last time, my mother was able to leave the Nie family smoothly. I really don't know how to thank you enough, so I brought you some things to express my gratitude."
Upon closer inspection, Liu Lizheng and Old Lady Zhao saw that Nie Qianqian was carrying about 3 jin of pork and 3 jin of white rice. These were not small items for the villagers, and they were not things that could be given away casually.
On one hand, Liu Lizheng thought to himself that Nie Qianqian's family was indeed different. He had heard that they bought an oxcart yesterday, and today they were able to give away so many things. On the other hand, he felt a sense of pride, feeling that he had a lot of face in front of his wife. It seemed that he, as the village head, was highly valued by Qianqian.
