Chapter 39 Her Heart, Forged of Steel (Part 2)
What did he say to you? Did he threaten you?
After being "escorted" out of the detention center by a group of police officers, Zhao Lin immediately reacted strongly, stepping forward to question Naya. Her demeanor was as if she wanted to avenge the injustice Naya had suffered that day.
Naya watched as Zhao Lin acted like a mature and composed adult one moment and like an unreasonable child the next, and she really didn't know how to deal with her in the future.
"You're driving me crazy, Naya! Don't keep everything to yourself!" She scolded Naya for not opening up. Was it because she hadn't yet gained Naya's trust?
"Zhao Lin, here, rules must be very important, right?"
“Rules?” It took her a moment to understand what Naya was trying to say.
You mean the law, right?
"Hmm." Naya stood on the deserted street, her figure appearing and disappearing in the dim light of the streetlights.
Many times, she liked to sit on the street and watch the crowds surge like a tide. Everyone seemed to have their own destination, but she felt like a fallen leaf, drifting in the wind, unable to find her way.
"Don't worry about that, the rules here don't apply to you," Zhao Lin explained.
“My tribe also has laws. The code is kept by the most respected elder in the tribe, and we must all abide by it... There, killing someone means paying with your life.”
"That's where you are, and this is where you are. Here, even trading lives depends on the circumstances. It was those people who attacked you first, which led to the danger that followed."
She stepped forward and gently placed her hands on Naya's shoulders, trying to help her relax.
"Don't overthink it, Naya. Killing that person wasn't your fault..."
That's what she said, but her right hand, which had been holding the knife, was still trembling uncontrollably. Naya instinctively pressed it down.
“Zhao Lin…”
"Thank you."
Right now, Naya doesn't even know how to thank her. If it weren't for her helping hand, she and Sharp might have already broken up... Zhao Lin's appearance made these incredibly difficult days much easier.
She is passionate, brave, and kind.
It wasn't just her. The residents of this small town, and indeed the entire Bear Ridge, were full of vitality and bustle. People lived and worked in peace and contentment, steadfastly holding their posts. It was a scene of prosperity. But she felt like an outsider, unable to integrate into this glamorous world. Deep within her heart, an indescribable loneliness and confusion surged.
Naya's simple attire contrasted sharply with the fashionable outfits of those around her. She tried to find a sense of belonging in the crowd, but each exchange of glances only made her feel more out of place. Her mind was filled with questions; she didn't know why Golden Antlers had chosen to bring her here, nor what she was actually searching for.
She still tried to find a sliver of solace in the twinkling starlight. She knew she needed to find her place, to find her voice in this world.
Dawn is breaking.
“It’s almost midnight, Naya, you’ve been busy all night…” Zhao Lin stretched lazily, her implication couldn’t be clearer.
"Go to sleep. I'll take care of Sharp... I'm still a little worried about him."
"But your body..."
Naya simply waved her hand gently, still looking determined to see things through.
"alright."
Having already witnessed her stubbornness, Zhao Lin had no choice but to compromise.
"By the way, when did you two meet?"
While the two chatted side by side, Zhao Lin asked Naya some questions about Sharp.
“About a month ago,” Naya sighed, marveling at how quickly time had passed. She remembered the first time she saw Sharp; the boy was lying quietly under that lone tree, his chest rising and falling slightly, while the lilacs beside him were quietly blooming… She had even secretly touched a few strands of his long hair.
“Back then, I was still in the forest. I never imagined that my life would change so drastically after I met Sharp.”
"In some ways, he changed me."
Naya didn't want any unpleasant factors to ruin this "unexpected journey." So she remembered every beautiful moment that happened here, remembered the names of the things she saw and encountered for the first time, and promised to continue on her way.
Perhaps this is the significance of my encounter with Sharp.
"Also, Zhao Lin. I am truly grateful for your complete trust in me and for keeping this secret. I will always remember this kindness."
"Oh dear, you're making me blush..." Zhao Lin blushed and playfully stuck out her tongue, but inside she was overjoyed. She knew that everything she had done was worthwhile.
The unique girl standing in front of us undoubtedly deserves more love and support, but unfortunately the time is not yet ripe to show her to the public.
Naya is simply too perfect! She is like a finely crafted work of art, exuding a captivating charm while retaining a rustic beauty.
She is shrouded in mystery, possesses a heart full of love, and yearns for a free and unrestrained lifestyle. How can one not admire such a near-perfect woman?
……
As the two traveled together, a phone call that could not be made was blocked by several mountains.
In the office building at sunset, Peng Fei, on a whim, clicked on the contact's profile picture, which had long since turned gray.
"Hello, I'm Zhao Lin. Please leave a message if you need anything..."
A mechanical voice repeated itself on the other end of the phone.
really.
The sound amplified in the empty office, sounding somewhat noisy. Peng Fei put down the phone, a little disappointed. Perhaps this was a better outcome for them? The two parted ways silently, drifting apart... the promises they had made to each other had naturally become a joke.
Am I doing the right thing?
If choosing An Han was a shortcut to a successful career, then her feelings for him... were they just a bonus?
Peng Fei didn't want An Han to get hurt again. But he had to ask himself what had been bothering him all this time.
He hung up the phone and opened the social media app.
"Are you free, Zhao Lin?"
"I want to talk to you."
I'll also include a bored emoji.
"You look really pathetic, Peng Fei." His mind was being tortured; every second he waited was excruciating. But the message "read" never appeared.
Could it be that she's too busy? Or is she deliberately ignoring me?
Thinking of this, Peng Fei immediately set off, intending to shamelessly head to the newspaper office. That was where she usually worked overtime. The moment he stood up, he accidentally knocked over the messy pile of books, forcing him to bend down again to pick them up.
Economics and Management... Journalism...
"despair."
With a crisp sound, a pair of gleaming high heels gently landed on the book, seemingly with an irresistible force, abruptly stopping Peng Fei's attempt to take it. His body froze instantly, a hint of surprise flashing in his eyes.
"Have mercy on your step, young lady." Peng Fei felt a surge of anger. Who could be here so late? He raised his head indignantly, trying to see the person's face clearly.
However, when his gaze met hers, he was enveloped by a familiar, subtle fragrance. This aroma lingered in the air, causing his heartstrings to tremble slightly. Taking advantage of a moment of dissatisfaction, she gracefully walked around the swivel chair and stood before Peng Fei, gazing down at him with an air of superiority.
“Xiao...Xiao Han?” Peng Fei called out the name with a look of astonishment, his voice filled with disbelief.
The woman before me was An Han. She wore a dark-colored halter dress, the hem of which was just the right length, stopping at the top of her thighs, outlining the long and alluring lines of her legs. At this moment, she exuded a mature and confident charm.
“I remember we don’t have to work overtime today, right?” An Han’s tone carried a clear implication, as if she were accusing Peng Fei of something. Then she added, “Karl told me you’ve already gone home. Humph, you all treat me like a child, trying to fool me…” Her eyes flashed with dissatisfaction and disappointment.
"I see..." He was trying to distract An Han by quietly turning off his phone, but she stopped him with her hand.
"What, you really want to go back to being a reporter?" She deliberately lowered her voice, placing her hands on the chair. They were starting to compete.
"No," Peng Fei replied dismissively, glancing away. An Han's strange posture made him feel suffocated.
That unfamiliar tone pierced her heart. An Han lowered her body and moved closer to Peng Fei.
“I can tolerate you in matters of the heart, Peng Fei. But some things are destined to be clearly defined.” Every word An Han uttered was icy cold.
“You’re overreacting, Miss An. I haven’t done anything yet.”
"What did you call me?" she glared at him.
Peng Fei seized the opportunity, quickly stood up, and unceremoniously pushed An Han aside. Then, he strode forward without looking back.
“We’ve already discussed this issue, An Han. It’s too early for us now.” Peng Fei’s voice came coldly, as if it could freeze the air.
"Stop right there!" An Han shouted angrily, her eyes flashing with rage and resentment. She chased after him, blocking Peng Fei's path.
"You have to explain yourself... Do you hear me!" An Han stretched out her hands, trying with all her might to stop Peng Fei. However, at that moment, her heel suddenly tripped over something, and she lost her balance. In a panic, An Han instinctively reached out and grabbed Peng Fei, and the two of them fell backward together.
Peng Fei tried to support her, but due to the immense inertia, he ultimately lost his balance and fell headfirst into An Han's soft breasts.
"Hmm!"
At that moment—the aroma was irresistible. Peng Fei even subconsciously took a deep breath.
"Mmm..." She let out a soft moan, her voice tinged with a hint of coquettishness and panic. She tried to push away the man pressing down on her, but her hands were as if nailed to the ground and she couldn't move them. At that moment, An Han's beautiful hair cascaded down like a waterfall, obscuring her stunning face.
Peng Fei's heavy breathing pattered against her cheek, the heat making her skin slightly flushed. Her eyes darted away, unable to meet his burning gaze, but she finally mustered the courage to meet his eyes for a moment.
Neither of them had expected this to happen, and they stood there stunned, at a loss for what to do.
"Is this the perfume I gave you?" Peng Fei finally broke the silence and asked. As he spoke, his gaze continued to wander around, seemingly with no intention of getting up and leaving immediately.
“Yours… I threw it away.” An Han replied without backing down, her tone cold and firm.
"Is that so?" Peng Fei asked softly, a barely perceptible smile appearing on his lips.
Perhaps it was An Han's half-hearted attitude that ignited the fire of desire deep within him, making him increasingly excited and restless.
He slowly moved closer, pressing his body even closer to An Han's. An Han couldn't help but shrink back, instinctively wanting to keep a certain distance from him.
However, An Han felt utterly powerless, as if all her strength had been exhausted in the fierce battle at the theater. She could only pound her soft, pink fists against Peng Fei's hard, iron-like chest, hoping to break free from his grasp. Peng Fei, however, gripped An Han's wrists tightly, holding her firmly beneath him, displaying an irresistible and dominant posture.
“You just left me there and walked away by yourself. I came back soaked in the rain.”
An Han naturally understood the implied meaning in the other party's words.
Her voice carried a hint of weariness and helplessness; she was simply too exhausted tonight.
"Not tonight, Peng Fei..."
However, the man simply responded with a "Mm." Then, without hesitation, he picked her up, as if he hadn't heard her words at all.
"Really... I have no strength left."
Before she could finish speaking, An Han's skirt was lifted up. At the same time, out of instinct, she clung tightly to Peng Fei like a koala.
"As the CEO, it's not unreasonable for you to take a day off tomorrow, is it?" Peng Fei's lips curled up slightly.
"Shameless...despicable scoundrel."
At this moment, An Han looked like an innocent child, her wet hair clinging to her cheeks, and only her mouth was still stubbornly resisting.
If we were to mention something about An Han that has never changed when facing herself, perhaps it would be her courage to make selfless contributions.
