Chapter 36 Guessing Lantern Riddles
Several months have passed, and winter has arrived in the blink of an eye. Snow is falling heavily, and the biting cold seeps straight into the heart. The fields and roads are all covered in white, but the courtyards of each household are different, with a splash of color adorning the earth.
In the Xia family home, Lin Yue and Xia Rongliu sat in the main room making glutinous rice balls. They held the dough in one hand and used a spoon to scoop out the filling with the other, then rolled the filling into balls and placed them on the cutting board next to them.
"Mom, today is the Lantern Festival. Will it be very lively tonight?" Xia Rongliu asked Lin Yue excitedly while kneading glutinous rice balls. She had been looking forward to it for weeks.
In her previous life, she was not allowed to go out on holidays like this. She could only stay in her own courtyard, and everything she needed was bought and brought back to her by servants. Gradually, she lost interest in it.
Unlike her previous life where she was confined to her home and forbidden to go out, every year here her parents would take her to the bustling market. There were many people there, and being gathered together made even the colder atmosphere less intense.
"Okay, when it gets more crowded at night, your dad and I will take you out to play. When you're tired, we can come back and eat glutinous rice balls. How about that?" Lin Yue asked with a smile, her hands still busy with her work.
"Okay, okay, can I ask Grandma to come and help with the wrapping?" Xia Rongliu suddenly asked. Lin Yue was taken aback for a moment, then agreed. Xia Rongliu ran towards her mother's room.
"Grandma, grandma, grandma—" A voice that could be described as ear-piercingly loud reached Xia's mother's ears. Xia's mother's lips twitched. Although she had become numb to it over time, she still got a jolt every time she heard it.
"Just talk it out properly, why are you shouting? I'm old, don't bother me with all this."
"Grandma~ how about we make glutinous rice balls together? Okay~" Xia Rongliu grabbed her mother's hand and shook it from side to side, acting coquettishly. Her mother was finding it increasingly difficult to resist her coquettishness.
"Make glutinous rice balls? Can't you and your mother finish making such a small amount?" Old Mrs. Xia shook her hand but couldn't shake it off; she hadn't used much force to begin with.
"Is it good? Is it good? Is it good? Is it good?" Xia Rongliu didn't answer, but kept shaking her mother's hand and asking her, "My mother will definitely leave some for me."
After much persuasion, Xia Rongliu finally agreed. The three women sat in the main room making glutinous rice balls together. When Xia Zhishu returned and saw this scene, he smiled with relief. His mother had changed a lot, but she still wouldn't give in.
Lin Yue had previously made a small cloth bag for Juejue, so that Juejue could be placed in the bag and slung across her body. She also made a rope, one end of which was tied to Juejue's body and the other end to the cloth bag.
This way, it will be much more convenient to take Juejue out with me, and I won't have to worry about Juejue running away. Of course, that's highly unlikely, as this cat is exceptionally lazy.
When evening came and it was time to go out, Xia Rongliu had Juejue on her arm, Lin Yue on her left, and Xia Zhishu on her right. The family of four were all good-looking, and they attracted a lot of attention on the street.
As for Aunt Xia, she went to accompany Aunt Wang. Aunt Wang didn't want to have any more affection for Wang Runfa, and she felt too lonely on the Lantern Festival, so she asked Aunt Xia to stay with her.
When they arrived at the market, Xia Rongliu looked around and skipped about. After a while, she felt a little hungry and went to find Xia Zhishu. Lin Yue was still laughing beside her.
"Are you hungry? Why don't you ask your dad to buy you some steamed buns to tide you over? There are so many good things to play with later, and you're already exhausted," Lin Yue said.
Xia Zhishu also took Xia Rongliu's hand and looked at Lin Yue, saying, "I'll take her to buy steamed buns. You go over there and pick out a few riddles. We'll be back in a bit." Lin Yue agreed.
"Boss, three meat buns and three vegetable buns, please," Xia Zhishu said to the bun shop owner. Xia Rongliu frowned, "I can't eat that many..."
Xia Zhishu playfully pinched Xia Rongliu's nose. "Isn't there still one more night to sleep? Buy more, just in case you get hungry again later." Xia Rongliu chuckled.
The steamed bun shop owner packed the meat buns and vegetable buns separately and handed them to Xia Rongliu. Xia Zhishu paid and then pulled Xia Rongliu toward Lin Yue.
Xia Rongliu stopped after taking only a few steps. Xia Zhishu turned around and looked at Xia Rongliu. "What's wrong, Yinyin?" Seeing that Xia Rongliu didn't answer, he followed her gaze.
I found a small figure in the corner, about the same age as Xia Rongliu. In this cold winter, he was wearing only a thin shirt and pants. The pants didn't even cover his ankles. The shirt was tattered and looked like it was letting in the wind. He was dirty and was curled up in a small, weak ball.
Xia Zhishu felt a pang of heartache at the sight. How could such a young child bear this? Coming back to his senses, Xia Rongliu had already let go of his hand and walked towards the child. Xia Zhishu frowned and followed. "Yinyin!"
Xia Rongliu walked over and squatted down in front of the small group of people. There was a bowl in front of the little boy with a few scattered copper coins in it; clearly, he was a beggar.
The little boy felt someone blocking the light, and slowly raised his head to look at a little girl squatting in front of him. Because of the backlight, he couldn't see Xia Rongliu's appearance very clearly, but her bright eyes were very noticeable.
He didn't know what emotions were inside, whether it was sympathy or pity. He received countless such looks every day and had gotten used to it. Every now and then, there would be the sound of copper tapping against porcelain. He knew that was a coin given by a passerby falling into the bowl.
He thought, why is this winter colder and harder to endure than in previous years? Perhaps he will die this winter...
Thinking it over, she stopped looking into those eyes and lowered her head, shrinking herself even more.
The next second, a breath of hot air hit his face. He looked up at her again, and a soft, sweet voice said to him, "Here's a steamed bun for you. I've never had one before."
The figure moved forward a little more, and through the sidelight shining through her hair, he saw that she had a small red bow tied in her hair, binding a small tuft of hair.
Xia Rongliu saw that the little beggar in front of her was not taking the buns, so she thought he was embarrassed and put two buns in the bowl in front of him, one with meat and one with vegetables.
"Yinyin..." Xia Rongliu heard her father calling her after she finished playing. She stood up and walked towards her father. "Father... I'm fine, let's go."
A meow came from Xia Rongliu. The little beggar saw that she was carrying a cat, and... her name was Yinyin. The little beggar was stunned for a long time, then finally lowered his eyes and reached for the bowl in front of him. The buns were still hot and fragrant.
Finally, unable to resist, she grabbed a steamed bun and wolfed it down, tears silently streaming down her cheeks as she swallowed.
"Dad, I just gave two steamed buns to that little boy in the corner." Xia Rongliu didn't mention the beggar, but the thought of the little boy's thin and bony appearance brought her indescribable feelings.
"Father knows, our Yinyin is the kindest. Let's go, your mother is still waiting for us." Xia Zhishu didn't blame Xia Rongliu; he had felt sorry for the child when he saw her.
Xia Rongliu was somewhat absent-minded. The little boy reminded her of her fate in her previous life: she was left to wander the streets and froze to death. She picked up a steamed bun and started to eat it, while Juejue was also carefully eating a steamed bun in her pocket.
Lin Yue selected the riddles and waited for Xia Rongliu and Xia Zhishu. "Where did you two just go? I saw you walking this way and then turning a corner." Xia Zhishu replied, "It's nothing. Let's guess the riddles and test our Yinyin."
